The herd Issue #5\ Fox Tech High School, San Antonio, Texas\ February 10, 2017 Commander and Chief (Staff Reporter, Jasson Campos) Three weeks ago, on January 20, 2017, our country celebrated a wonderful American tradition the peaceful transition of government. On Friday, President Donald Trump was sworn in on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. As always, the event featured lots of pageantry with large crowds on the Mall grounds. Chief Justice John Roberts had the honor of swearing in President Trump using two bibles, one used by Abraham Lincoln and a Trump family bible. Former presidents James Carter, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and of course Barack Obama were in attendance. With mixed feelings, I witnessed President Trump walk President Obama and his wife Michelle to a waiting helicopter which would carry the couple out of Washington D.C. into the sunset. For many of us, President Obama is the only president that we can truly remember. Good luck President Trump & Thanks to President Obama. Go U.S.A.! 1 P a g e The Dream Marches On (Staff Reporter, Athena McCloud) On Monday, January 16 th the City of San Antonio celebrated the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Thousands of San Antonio gathered for the annual parade in honor of MLK, one of the largest in the nation. The approximate 2 ½ mile march began at Martin Luther King Academy and concluding at Pittman-Sullivan Park. On this rainy morning, Fox Tech students marched proudly in the celebration carrying a banner representing the Magnet programs at Fox Tech. The Dream was represented in all the smiling faces of everyone participating in this year s event. People of all ages, genders, and races walked together remembering and paying tribute to the famed civil rights leader. It was great to see our students participating in such a joyous event, sharing with our community. It was a great lesson and experience. I am very proud of our students for giving up a large part of their Monday, shared Social Studies teacher Mr. Martinez.
A Big Splash (Staff Reporter, Robert Herrera) On Thursday, January 19, the Fox Tech swim team competed in the district championships held at the SAISD Natatorium. The air was filled with both chlorine and excitement, as each sport competed at each heat and event. Fox Tech had an army of swimmers representing our campus. Congratulations to Coach Cuccia for building a strong and competitive program. Fox Tech swimmers cheered each other on. Many Tech students, family, and faculty were also present to cheer our Water Buffaloes. It was a great evening as our Lady Buffaloes won district once again (back-to-back champions.) Our boys team took second. In all, our swimmers brought home dozens of medals. Next stop are regionals. We salute and wish our advancing swimmers all our best. Go Swim Team! 2 P a g e Lady Buffaloes End the Season with a Nail-Biter! (Staff Reporter, Eliana Marquez) On Friday, February 3 rd, the Lady Buffaloes concluded their basketball season for the season as both JV and Varsity teams hosted Cole High School. The Junior Varsity would drop a hard-fought game, splitting their season series with the Lady Cougars. Point guard Austin Martinez would lead in scoring with 19 points and solid contributions by Naomi Nobles and Alizza Pena. The varsity game went down to the final seconds as both teams traded leads. The exciting game ended with a Buffalo victory with smothering defense from Laura Reyna, solid scoring from Melanie Molina, April Casanova, and Taylor Devillier, and pounding inside play by Kajal Bhakta and Tre Anna Brown. The gymnasium was rocking with excitement over the tense play by both teams. Cheering from the sidelines behind the Buffalo bench was the entire Varsity Boys team. This exciting game would be the last for seniors Melanie Molina, Kajal Bhakta, and April Casanova. Before the game, these three ladies would receive a Senior Game Ball from Coach Harvey and the squad. Thank you, Lady Buffaloes, for a great fantastic season!
Golf Teams Brings Home The Hardware (Staff Reporter, Christopher Trevino) Fox Tech Boys and Girls teams participated in the NISD Spring Invitational at the Northcliffe Golf Club on Monday, January 30th in Converse, Texas. Both Emmanuel Vazquez and Jasmine Sanchez finished as Top Ten individuals among the large field of 12 high schools. Our Lady Buffaloes brought home a Second-Place trophy. I was not surprised. Our ladies have been dedicated in practice. Little by little, these ladies are improving their game, says Coach Martinez. By any standard, Jasmine Sanchez played a great game, but she was not satisfied, I can do better. I will do better, It s that type of attitude that has become infectious among the lady golfers this year. Both boys and girls teams will continue to refine their skills for the Spring District Championships in Floresville. Nothing Par About Team Tijerina (Staff Reporter, Yulissa Cardenas) Coach Martinez is celebrating a new first for his golf team. It is the first time he has ever had three siblings playing on his golf team in the same year. Team Tijerina consists of Freshman Martin, Sophomore Katarina, and Senior Constancia. According to Coach Martinez, who has also had each Tijerina as geography students, all three are model students involved in a multiple of activities. I am proud of these three. They are studious, polite, respectful, and responsible. Their parents have done a great job. All three golfers are avid musicians that perform for our Fox Tech Mariachi. Katarina is currently the captain of the Lady Buffalo golf team. Sibling rivalries are not apparent with this family - they are supportive and fostering of each other. Golf is a perfect sport for this busy trio, easily accommodating their busy school schedules. Spring time is the busy season for golfers, so if you are interested in joining the golf team, stop by, and visit Coach Martinez in A P a g e
Career Shadowing Around Town (Staff Reporter, Christopher Trevino) Fox Tech Magnet students joined nearly 1700 students from the San Antonio area to shadow professionals in the workplace. Over 50 area businesses partnered with this annual event sponsored by the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. This citywide shadow day is a meaningful opportunity for San Antonio s youth to get a first-hand look at the various careers and jobs that exist across our city, said San Antonio Chamber of Commerce President Richard Perez. Many of our students visited locations throughout the city, such as, the Bexar County Courthouse and the San Antonio City Council Chambers. Sophomore Austin Martinez, part of a group that shadowed the San Antonio Main Library said that that it was interesting following our professional throughout their daily duties. No doubt, many of our participating students came back with a new perspective regarding the workplace. 4 P a g e CAST Tech (Staff Reporter, Kendra Turpin) Fox Tech has witnessed big changes this year. With the addition of the Advanced Learning Academy, the hallways are not at empty as they used to be. However, don't get too settled as another campus will unveil on the historic Fox Tech campus this August. The new CAST Tech will occupy the old "C" and "D" buildings. The construction and renovation is being supervised by one of the programs partners HEB. CAST Tech will be focus on the demanding careers of our area, such as applied science and technology. Much like the ALA, the new school will offer a different approach to curriculum, supplying the students with the skills for 21st century technology careers. Cast Tech is funded by generous contributions and partnerships from HEB, TechBloc, CodeUp, Geekdom, Rackspace, The Open Cloud Academy, USAA, Frost Bank, Firstmark Credit Union, University Health System, and SAISD. These partners will contribute industry knowledge, expertise, and guidance. The new campus's principal is Dr. Kelly Flieger, who is already busy on the Tech campus planning for the new school year. She believes the Fox Tech campus will be transferred to one of innovation. Bringing both positive PR and a group of pioneer students that are eager for a challenge. Students can focus on the technical side of industry including cyber-security, coding, gaming, animation, and digital media or the business oriented side of industry including business analytics, informatics, business administration, banking, and finance. Magnet instructor Mr. Martinez says "I see the Fox Tech campus as a bag of precious jewels. Each jewel represents the three campuses, Medical and Law Magnet, Advanced Learning Academy, and CAST Tech. People will be talking about Fox Tech as a premier educational destination and experience, not just San Antonio, but around the state, and even across the nation." So, while Fox Tech campus enjoys its place in history as the oldest public school in South Texas, never doubt that our campus continues to evolve paving its way into the future. Nothing stops a Herd!

Rule of Two (Staff Reporter, Clea Blaylock & Skylar Sigala) In a bookstore near you a new Star Wars novel awaits. Drew Karpyshyn brings to life a Star Wars novel taking place 1,032 years before the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope. This novel will satisfy your quench for Star Wars after seeing Rouge One and having to wait until Star Wars Episode 8 comes out in December The Rule of Two reveals the tradition set by Darth Bane that only be two Siths can exist at one time one Master and his apprentice. Rather than highlighting the iconic characters we've come to know and love such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, or the beloved Princess Leia, the novel focuses on Darth Bane and his apprentice plan to take down the powerful Jedi Order. His plan appears genius as the pair proceed undetected, while the Jedi believe that the last of the Sith were wiped out in the Sith Wars. Jedi Padawan Johun Othone is determined to take down Bane for killing his Jedi Master. Using the Force, Othone has visions of the destruction Bane will bring forward in the future. Rule of Two is a spine-tingling book that will send the readers in a frenzy. This book offers an amazing audiobook with fantastic sound effects that makes reading along with the novel that much more fun. If you are a Star Wars fan and are craving an action-packed novel, then this is the novel for you. May the Force Be with You! Hidden Figures (Staff Reporters, Sabrina Perez & Noemi Rodriguez) Hidden Figures is the untold behind-the-scenes story about one of the greatest missions in NASA history. The film stars Taraji Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe. These three delightful women play super intelligent African American women that worked behind the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. These math geniuses provided vital data and computations for the historic mission. Despite prejudices regarding their race and gender, these ladies persevere and triumph. You cannot help but feel inspired. The movie is fun, exciting, and thought-provoking, Sophomore Eimy Garcia says, The movie shows people that if you have a goal and you are determined, you can get to it. We recommend this movie for every young lady out there with a dream. The movies message is simple shoot for the moon! Culture (Staff Reporter, Jonathan Moralez) Culture is an album by Atlanta based rap group Migos which consists of three talented artists Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff. The album is highly anticipated as two songs are already on the Billboard 100. The Migos are known for starting many new trends. They have been called the new age Beatles by Rolling Stone magazine. The album features 13 songs on this album featuring Lil Uzi Vert, Dj Khaled, 2 Chainz, and Travis Scott. The album can be purchased on itunes. 6 P a g e
