3 PAGE 4 From Lancaster ISD Courtesy of Anika Perkins Director of Professional Development With the ever-changing demands of educators to prepare students at a more rigorous level, providing on-going trainings for educators is essential. Think about it. How long could a person work on any job today and not continuously have an opportunity to learn and develop new ideas? Not very long! The world we live in evolves at such a rapid pace, therefore, we must embrace becoming the life-long learner that we want our students and children to be. Lancaster ISD is doing just that. A committee of district stakeholders has developed a professional development framework that focuses on six components of learning opportunities. New Hire Academy, Teacher Mentor and New Teacher Induction Programs Back-to-School In-Service Trainings Required Online and Face-to-Face Trainings Job-Embedded Trainings Trade-Out Trainings Early Release and Full Day Trainings The New Hire Academy is a time when we integrate all new staff members to Lancaster ISD. During this time, we outline the reasons why Lancaster is not only the city of choice for employment, but also a place to live and do business. This year, we plan to introduce a traditional teacher mentoring and induction program to support new and struggling teachers. The back to school in-service trainings give all staff members an opportunity to assess the previous year and work collaboratively to outline strategies for improvement. Each year, all staff members are required, by law, to receive trainings that ensure that school districts are keeping all students safe have their best interests in mind at all times. We will not only provide these trainings face-to-face, but also online. In addition, we offer jobembedded trainings during the work day which allows teachers to meet with their peers from different grades and campuses. We also offer trade-out trainings where staff members can trade out personal time used to attend trainings, present trainings and/or take college coursework for contracted time. Trade-out training opportunities are outlined by categories based on all staff members job assignments, with all staff members receiving hours of trainings in literacy and technology as a baseline. Finally, we plan to use student early release and full day holidays to allow staff members time to assess students learning levels, conduct parent conferences and collaborate with peers about ways to better support struggling students. In addition to the professional development framework, the district has restructured the Student Exploration Engagement Center (formerly the Administration Building) on Pleasant Run Rd. to serve as a professional learning facility and has brought on additional support to enhance teacher development. Lancaster ISD is committed to being a district that is reflective of a learning community where ongoing professional development is a way of life. We invite everyone in Lancaster and surrounding communities to join us in our quest for excellence Board of Directors * Stephanie Williamson, Chair DART Transit Company * Doug Hunt, Past-Chair Access Self Storage * Kenneth Govan, Chair-Elect ONCOR Electric Delivery * Sharon Brooks, Treasurer Traditional Health Care * Stacy Marshall, President Lancaster Chamber Cheryl Adams Pattillo Insurance Evelina Echols-Sutton Methodist Charlton Medical Center Sonali Majmudar Hampton Inn & Suites Stacey McDonald Corner Stone Credit Union Dr. Megan Palsa Cedar Valley College * Randy Rostad Retired Melody Stillings Regions Bank Deylon Walker * Dr. John Wong UNT Dallas Sarah Zafarano Mote & Associates Ex-Officio Members Marcus Knight, Mayor Opal Robertson, City Manager Dr. Michael McFarland Lancaster ISD Charles Hatfield, County Press * Denotes Members of Executive Committee

4 PAGE 5 AROUND AND ABOUT The Best Southwest by Joe Johnson, IOM, Executive Director August 2013 If it s August in the Best Southwest area, it s time for the annual TGIF Legislative Breakfast Series which is held each year on the first four Fridays in August. In 2013 those dates are August 2, 9, 16, and 23, with Jonathan Davis and Methodist Charlton Medical Center once again hosting the breakfasts as the Presenting Sponsor. BSW Legislative Chair Kenneth Govan with Oncor has arranged for a splendid line-up of presenters, including Senator Royce West, Representative Yvonne Davis, Representative Jim Pitts, and Representative Helen Giddings. Each Friday, TGIF begins at 7:15 a.m. with a delicious breakfast and networking among peers in MCMC s banquet hall, until the meeting is called to order at 7:30 a.m. BSW Chair Dr. Kevin Fegan or Chair Elect Grant Galliford will emcee the program introducing elected officials in attendance. BSW s Immediate Past Chair and Lancaster Mayor Marcus Knight will introduce the featured legislator and conduct a View-like dialogue, asking pertinent questions about the Texas Legislative Sessions just concluded. The complete schedule of Legislators: TGIF August 2 Senator Royce West TGIF August 9 Representative Yvonne Davis TGIF August 16 Representative Jim Pitts TGIF August 23 Representative Helen Giddings These TGIF Legislative Breakfasts are free, thanks to our Presenting Sponsor and Host Methodist Charlton Medical Center. The other sponsors include: Bronze Series Sponsors - TXU Energy, the City of Glenn Heights, the Cedar Hill Chamber, and Focus Daily News; August 2 nd Silver Sponsor Uptown Village at Cedar Hill, August 16 Bronze Sponsor Oncor. Events such as these are impossible to put on without supporting sponsors, and they are appreciated. In other notes, after the August 2 nd TGIF Session, the BSW Visioning Committee will meet in Board Room #5 on the 3 rd floor of MCMC at approximately 8:30 a.m. The BSW Executive Board will meet after the August 9 th TGIF Session (also on the 3 rd floor), and the Full Best Southwest Partnership Board will meet after TGIF on August 16 th. And finally, while August is full of activities, September will be even more involved with BSW s 3 rd Quarter Luncheon featuring U. S. Senator Ted Cruz. The DeSoto Chamber is coordinating this featured luncheon, and the Sen. Cruz scheduling folks have promised a date in September for the BSW Luncheon. Stay tuned for this one! That s it for now, and we ll see you Around and About the Best Southwest! For more information contact: Joe Johnson, IOM Executive Director Best Southwest Partnership director@bestsouthwest.org
