3 CEO Message Can-Do Teachers Leslie Wilcox PBS Hawai i President and CEO A Hawaiian proverb tells us: To prepare for 1 year, plant kalo. To prepare for 10 years, plant koa. To prepare for 100 years, teach the children. Here at PBS Hawai i, count us in for the third option! Our programming for all ages is designed to nourish minds, and Hawai i teachers are very much a part of this educational television/multimedia center. About 80 digital media teachers from all over the state private, public and charter school educators recently met for a workshop in our cheerful new building. These professionals are teaching and learning at the same time, preparing their students for the future in a fast-changing world. The teaching connection at PBS Hawai i is baked in. Our very first general manager was a teacher at the University of Hawai i at Manoa, Robert M. Reed, who established this organization in the 1960s to show the value of television as a teaching aid. Several chapters of the Hawai i Alpha Delta Kappa organization of women educators have long served as volunteers here, overseeing young keiki and students at our events and handling paperwork. ADK members and tireless retired teachers Jean Kiyabu and Julie Shimonishi have served on our Board of Directors. Another Board member is the extraordinary Candy Suiso of Wai anae High School, who many years ago set the stage for PBS Hawai i s HIKI NŌ statewide student news network, by sharing digital media with her students. They became engaged learners and continue to be a potent force in creative youth media, locally and nationally. Thanks to generous funding from former San Francisco educator Joyce Stupski and her Stupski Family Fund of the Hawai i Community Foundation, we are able to provide the schools HIKI NŌ teachers with storytelling mentors and training in journalism and video production. It was a retired public elementary school teacher, Honolulu s Karen Watanabe, who actually completed our building campaign by leaving us a large gift when she passed away at age 89. She loved math and liked to play the markets. Leeward O ahu s Teacher of the Year, the innovative Luane Higuchi of Wai anae Intermediate, has written a letter urging islanders to invest in children through PBS Hawai i. We re most grateful and very proud to stand alongside Hawai i s teachers in planting a can-do spirit and learning and workforce skills, in preparing children for the future. A hui hou - until next time... 3

4 Oct Cover Story Hamilton s Heights Great Performances: Hamilton s America By Elisa Lichtenbaum, THIRTEEN and Liberty Peralta, PBS Hawai i It began in Lin-Manuel Miranda was on vacation in Mexico, reading Ron Chernow s biography of Alexander Hamilton all 832 pages of it. When he returned to New York, he invited Chernow to see In the Heights, his first Broadway show and winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical. During a backstage visit afterwards, Miranda told the author that as he was reading his book, hiphop songs started rising off the pages. I knew it was my next show, he says. Eight years, 11 Tony Awards, and one Pulitzer Prize later, Hamilton, Miranda s hit musical, is the hottest ticket on Broadway and a pop culture phenomenon. It s also the subject of Hamilton s America, a new documentary from Great Performances airing this month on PBS Hawai i as the season premiere of the PBS Arts Fall Festival. Hamilton s America offers an intimate look at the creation of the show, revealing Miranda s process as he adapts Hamilton s epic story into groundbreaking musical theater. Newly shot footage of the New York production with its original cast and trips to Mt. Vernon, Valley Forge, and other historic locations with Miranda and other cast members further flesh out the story. Hamilton s full story a poor immigrant who built himself up from nothing to become the architect of modern finance and one of the nation s most vital authors has largely been forgotten by history until now. But the story of Alexander Hamilton is most remembered for its dramatic conclusion, which saw Hamilton killed in a duel by Vice President Aaron Burr. pbshawaii.org 4 Pictured top: Lin-Manuel Miranda and the original cast of Hamilton

5 Hamilton s America offers an intimate look at the creation of the show, revealing Miranda s process as he adapts Hamilton s epic story into groundbreaking musical theater. Today, Hamilton s fan club is vocal and growing, thanks to Miranda s revolutionary musical. With its young cast claiming America s history as its own, Hamilton is redefining how audiences learn about history. I think many people of color tend to disassociate themselves from America s Founding Fathers, writes Christina Torres, an English teacher at University Laboratory School in Honolulu, and a Hamilton fan. Hamilton has the ability to connect [me] with the story that I feel separated from, while still acknowledging many of the struggles that people of color continue to face. With its diverse cast, Hamilton has also given aspiring actors of color renewed optimism. It has given hope for me, an Asian American female aspiring to work in the entertainment industry, to sustain a career, something that wouldn t have been possible a few decades ago, writes Katie Ozawa, a freshman at the University of Hawai i at Hilo. She adds: I think that if you told anyone that there would be a rap/hip-hop musical on Broadway that would sell out months in advance five years ago, absolutely nobody would have believed you. One local Hamilton fan was inspired to organize a Broadway-themed improv comedy show, scheduled for October 8 at the Pagoda Hotel in Honolulu. The promised event highlights include a Hamilton rap battle. Event organizer Kimee Balmilero was fortunate enough to score tickets to the sold-out Broadway show, thanks to a connection with one of the original cast members. I seriously had no idea what Hamilton was about, but everyone told me I had to see it, she writes. She fell in love with the show and ended up seeing it twice. I didn t want to forget it. It was that powerful to me." 9 LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX: SAM KAMAKA JR. AND FRED KAMAKA SR. Tuesday, October 11, 7:30 pm By Emily Bodfish A sweet tune plays, telling of skies of blue and clouds of white found somewhere over the rainbow. The artist the beloved Israel Kamakawiwo ole. The instrument in his hands a Kamaka ukulele. Now celebrating 100 years in business, Kamaka Hawai i has been the ukulele crafter of choice for artists and celebrities including George Harrison, Eddie Vedder, and Laurel and Hardy. At six years old, local virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro received his first Kamaka ukulele and has sworn by them ever since. On October 11, meet second-generation owners of Kamaka Hawai i, Sam and Fred Kamaka. From a young age, Sam and Fred, now 94 and 92 years old, walked the halls of their father s ukulele factory. I was only four years of age, and they weren t going to leave me at home to burn the house down, Fred said. However, that the brothers would inherit the family business was far from certain. After witnessing the attack on Pearl Harbor, then being drafted to serve during World War II, the two brothers pursued their own education and career paths, taking them far from Hawai i and the ukulele factory. Life changed directions overnight for Sam when his father passed away. Sam took the reins of the company, joined later by his brother, and the two have dutifully worked to perfect their craft and take care of the customer, as their father used to say. Now, having passed the torch to their own sons, the brothers reflect on their journey. I didn t expect to be here at 94, Sam said So the ukulele must be a blessing. Keep strumming [an ukulele] is small enough you can take it wherever you can, around the world. to fly backwards, upside-down and float in mid-air. Now, see them mate, lay eggs, fight and raise families in intimate detail. 9:00 NOVA Super Tunnel Follow an army of engineers and designers as they tackle the complex challenge of building Crossrail, a massive new subterranean railway deep beneath the streets of London. 10:00 WWII MEGA WEAPONS The Tunnels of Okinawa Learn how Imperial Japan built a network of defensive lines, bunkers and fortifications across the island of Okinawa. 11:00 LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX Sam Kamaka Jr. and Fred Kamaka Sr. (e) 11:30 A CHEF S LIFE Peas, Please (e) 1:00 WWII MEGA WEAPONS The Tunnels of Okinawa 2:00 THE CONTENDERS - 16 FOR 16 Goldwater/Reagan - The Conservatives 13 THURSDAY 7:30 HIKI NŌ 8:00 INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAI I 9:00 PBS HAWAI I PRESENTS E Haku Inoa: To Weave a Name (e) 10:00 GLOBE TREKKER Paris City Guide (e) 11:00 WELL READ Ann Patchett: Commonwealth 11:30 A CRAFTSMAN S LEGACY The Chocolatiers 1:00 NATURE Super Hummingbirds 2:00 NOVA Super Tunnel 14 FRIDAY 7:30 WASHINGTON WEEK WITH GWEN IFILL 8:00 CHARLIE ROSE - THE WEEK 8:30 POINT TAKEN (e) 9:00 GREAT PERFORMANCES Grammy Salute to Music Legends This all-star concert salutes The Recording Academy s Lifetime Achievement, Trustee and Music Educator award winners. 13 NA MELE: KEAUHOU Monday, October 17, 7:30 pm By Emilie Howlett Keauhou features Zachary Lum, Jonah Solatorio and Nicholas Lum (left to right), and guest Robert Cazimero at the piano. Three men stand framed by red velvet curtains, white columns and koa furniture a portrayal of a bygone era, when Waikiki was about opulence and an old-world splendor. These young men have no firsthand experience of this era that is recreated around them. Yet when they sing, the ringing falsetto that springs forth sounds right at home. The trio is Hawaiian music group Keauhou brothers Nicholas and Zachary Lum, and Jonah Kahanuola Solatorio. Their name translates to the new or renewed generation, fitting for a group that plays traditional Hawaiian music from the early to mid- 20th century, with an approach that hardly feels out of place to modern ears. With Zachary on vocals and guitar, Jonah on vocals and ukulele and Nicholas on vocals and bass, the men take their musical cues from legends such as Mahi Beamer, Vickie I i Rodrigues and Helen Desha Beamer, to name a few. They aim to renew interest in the this era of Hawaiian music by engaging audiences young and old, to ensure the songs and stories are perpetuated into the future. They have found a mentor in music and hula legend Robert Cazimero, whom they call one of their biggest supporters and inspirations. He joins them for Wehiwehi Oe, on the piano, adding his sweeping vocals to their blended falsetto. The traditional Hawaiian music Keauhou plays is rife with visual poetry, and they believe music can be the perfect gateway for new generations to connect with and explore their culture and their language. All three men are students of the Hawaiian language; olelo is at the heart of why they play music. For us to go back to that and to read the words of our kupuna, to really understand them, it grounds ourselves in our culture and our language, Nicholas says. [It] is one of the most beautiful things you can do, I think. 17 MONDAY 7:30 NA MELE Keauhou See above 8:00 ANTIQUES ROADSHOW Jacksonville, FL, Part 2 of 3 (e) 9:00 ANTIQUES ROADSHOW Jacksonville, FL, Part 3 of 3 (e) 10:00 POV Hooligan Sparrow Follow Hooligan Sparrow and other activists across southern China seeking justice for schoolgirls allegedly sexually abused by their principal. 18 pbshawaii.org 18 Oct Partner Profile AARP Hawaii By Tina Yamaki Gerry Silva AARP Hawaii Volunteer State President E komo mai to AARP Hawaii, which continues to create and connect people age 50 and up with unique tools and programs; help them save money; and tackle the issues that matter most to them, their families and their communities. Whether you re seeking a balanced perspective on state and national issues, or connecting with programs that reflect the rich diversity of American life, PBS Hawai i offers thoughtful and engaging content that can t be found anywhere else, states Gerry Silva, Volunteer State President of AARP Hawaii. AARP Hawaii is a sponsor of Family Ingredients, a locally produced series celebrating how food can profoundly unite cultures, communities and families. I am especially fond of local programs that highlight and celebrate the culture of Hawai i and the lives of its people like Na Mele and Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox. Family Ingredients is another program that quickly became a favorite at my house, and I imagine the same is true for families across the state. No other local program offers as satisfying a combination of social history and evocative storytelling about the foods and cultural practices that are part of our island heritage. Watching Family Ingredients is like sitting down to a home-cooked meal with friends and neighbors, Silva adds. It s an experience that always leaves you wanting more. Mahalo a nui loa to Gerry Silva and AARP Hawaii for their continued support of PBS Hawai i.
