2 New Member Profile HANCHEL CHENG emphasizes employee contributions and provides many opportunities for professional development. She estimates there are women in the engineering division in the Sacramento office out of 600 total employees, plus there are many top level women leading large groups of staff. Hanchel first learned about SWE at UC Irvine, where she participated informally and helped with STEM activities. When she started her job, she discovered that Northrop Grumman is a SWE corporate member, so she is part of that membership. In her spare time, she enjoys tennis and learning new languages. Welcome to SWE Sac Valley, Hanchel! Hanchel Cheng received her BS in Electrical Engineering in 2014 from UC Irvine and her MS in EE from Stanford in Her masters focused on communications and signal processing, including specific topics massive MIMO (multipleinput/multiple-output) and audio processing. At the end of June 2016, Hanchel started working as a systems engineer for Northrop Grumman, a leading global security company. She works in the Sacramento office and was amazed at the scope and breadth of knowledge she s gained in just a few months about the practical side of engineering, things that that were not taught in academia. Hanchel has learned how to develop subsystem requirements, manage risk, and track performance measures. She has been involved with customer briefings, where she presented the status of technical requirements to keep the customer aware and satisfied with development. Hanchel really enjoys her work and likes solving problems from the top level down, a perfect fit for systems engineering. The people she works with are phenomenal. 3 SWE Community News SPEED MENTORING EVENT WITH SAC STATE UNIVERSITY OF THE PACIFIC'S TEAM TECH BY UOP TEAM TECH 2016 On September 27, the Sacramento State Chapter of Society of Women Engineers hosted a Speed Mentoring event. The event allowed students to meet one-on-one with several professionals in a variety of different engineering fields and ask questions. Professionals would remain seated and every 5 minutes the students would rotate to the next professional. At the end of the event, students were allowed time to reconnect with any of the professionals they had a strong connection with to exchange contact information and develop a mentorship. The event was a great opportunity for students and professionals alike! University of the Pacific's Team Tech is a nationallyranked group that creates product prototypes over a ten-month period then presents those projects at the upcoming Society of Women Engineers in Philadelphia. In 2015, our very own Team Tech worked with Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla in Mexico, and Tierra Luna Engineering to create a small satellite, nicknamed a "CubeSat." This CubeSat is now used to monitor volcanic activity in Mexico, and scientists can now alert local communities of potential dangerous volcanic activity something that did not exist before Team Tech's combined efforts. This year, Team Tech is designing a solar dehydrator to combat poverty for families in Nicaragua. Currently, 76% of the population in Nicaragua lives on less than $2 a day this is something we hope that our dehydrator will improve. Dried fruit has a much longer shelf-life than fresh fruit, supplying families with food with reduced risk of spoilage. Dried fruit is also a true cash crop a Nicaraguan family with a solar dehydrator, not only can provide food for their family, but can turn their crop into additional income. Your support will allow us to build a series of prototypes to test with an estimated initial cost of $1,200. You will help cover the cost of materials needed to build the prototypes. After completion of the design, we will be traveling as a team to the Women Engineers National Conference 2016, in Sacramento Valley Section Page 3

4 Philadelphia from October 26-30, to present our project. Please help us take advantage of this opportunity for the team to present their hard work, network with fellow engineers, and job search at the career fair. Your generous support will help us as we network with people from all over the world while representing University of the Pacific at the world's largest engineering conference. For assistance with making a gift, please contact: Sally Cebreros, Executive Director, Annual Giving - Cell: , or Cindy Corrello Hilke, Assistant Director, Annual Giving Operations - Cell: SWE SVS EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES The school year has started and the Sacramento City Unified School District, School of Engineering and Science (SES) has identified the following specific needs which you or your company / employer can assist with this school year. 1. Senior Project Mentors are needed for one-onone student mentoring and/or video conferencing. Dates: September through May on days and times determined by students and mentor. At least one initial in-person meeting with student is necessary prior to use of video conferencing. Weekly schedules are generally posted at For inquiries or interest in becoming a mentor, please contact Patrick Wong at pat.wong@arb.ca.gov; ph# (916) or contact Jacquie Scinto at Jacquie-Scinto@seshs.org; (530) (cell); (916) (SES). 2. Friday Speaker Series guest speakers are needed throughout the school year. Students gather in the career center to listen to the guest speaker presentation regarding their career or particular industry sector. There is generally one speaker for each date. The guest speaker talks consist of a minute presentation followed by a 10 minute Q&A. Presentations may include PowerPoint, video, and/or show & tell objects. Related industry swag is acceptable and enjoyable for students. You can find the Friday Speaker Series dates on the SES web site school calendar: s_angeles. For inquiries or interest in being a guest speaker please contact Patrick Bohman at Patrick- Bohman@seshs.org; (916) (cell); (916) ext (office). 3. Robotics Program Support. The SES robotics program is in desperate need of sponsors and/or donors for materials / supplies and funding to support each team. If you or your company would like to help sponsor the robotics program please contact Patrick Bohman at Patrick- Bohman@seshs.org; (916) (cell); (916) ext (office). 4. Science Fair Judges: SES has tentatively scheduled the high school science fair for December 21, SES has tentatively scheduled the Middle School (7th and 8th grades) science fair for March 15, If you are interested in signing up to be a judge at either fair, please contact Patrick Wong at pat.wong@arb.ca.gov ; ph# (916) Job Shadow or Intern Opportunities: SES is interested in connecting high school students with industry related job shadowing and / or student intern opportunities. If your company / workplace is interested in hosting a student for this opportunity please contact the SWE-SVS Outreach Coordinator, Lorraine Larsen-Hallock. Sacramento Valley Section Page 4
