Please read over the newsletter sooner than later so that you don t miss out on something you are interested in attending! Volunteers Needed!!! AARP Tax Aide is looking for client facilitators and tax preparers for the upcoming tax season. Client facilitators welcome taxpayers and help organize their paperwork and tax preparers work directly with taxpayers. All volunteers receive training and continued support. If you are interested in volunteering for the upcoming tax season please contact Marie Glenn at Your Kidneys and You Tuesday, August 1st at 12:45 pm Your Kidneys and You is a program designed to raise awareness about how the kidneys function, the risk factors for kidney disease, and how to protect the kidneys. This program is provided by a National Kidney Foundation staff member and is followed by questions from the audience. Register in the office. National Root Beer Float Day Friday, August 4th at 1:00 pm Root beer floats are not just for kids! Today, people around the country will drink up and enjoy a root beer float to celebrate. Bingo Bash Tuesday, August 8th at 1:00 pm Back by popular demand, Stefan Mychajliw, Erie County Comptroller will be joining us for bingo today. Bring a guest and receive a free card! Shipwrecks of Lake Erie Thursday, August 10th at 1:00 pm Carol Rogers, from New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, will give a presentation on the rich maritime history which lies beneath the surface of Lake Erie. Register in the office. Stress FUNdamentals Friday, August 11th at 12:45 pm Everyone suffers from stress. We worry about our finances, health, and families. However, too much stress can be dangerous. We ll discuss how stress affects our health and ways to manage stress. We ll also talk about the benefits of humor because everyone can use a good laugh! Register in the office. R.S.V.P. Orientation (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) Monday, August 14th at 9:30 am RSVP provides opportunities for people ages 55 and older to volunteer their talents and make a positive impact on the community. If you would like to learn more about how you can make a difference, please attend this 90 minute orientation. The orientation will cover the various needs throughout Erie County and match your personal interests and skills with opportunities to help solve community problems. FREE KEEP Healthy - Kidney Screenings FREE Tuesday, August 15th 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm Most people who are diagnosed with kidney disease did not know that they were sick. Kidney disease has no symptoms until it is too late and kidneys fail, requiring dialysis or a transplant to stay alive. KEEP Healthy assesses participants risk for kidney disease and through quick tests, determines if they have signs of kidney disease. During the screening, we also educate patients about ways to keep their kidneys healthy and reduce risk. This is the most immediate way we fight kidney disease and help the community. In addition to the screening, you will receive a Risk Survey, Blood Pressure check, Body Mass Index (BMI) measurement, and consultation with a clinician. Screenings are staffed by volunteers and professionals from the National Kidney Foundation. Please make an appointment for a screening. Unseen Tears: The Native American Boarding School Experience in Western New York Monday, August 28th at 1:00 pm Pete Hill (Cayuga Nation, Heron Clan), will present this powerful, 30-minute documentary by Native American Community Services of Erie & Niagara Counties, Inc. (NACS). The documentary explores the little-known aspects and traumas associated with residential boarding schools, specifically those that impacted Native people in New York State and Southern Ontario. These schools were designed with the intent to Kill the Indian, Save the Person, meaning to weed out all cultural identity, knowledge, and language of Native children while attempting to assimilate Native people into mainstream American society. Unseen Tears provides a stark look into the many severe challenges and traumas that were perpetrated on many Native children in the schools, while also recognizes the residual impacts of these factors. A discussion period will follow the viewing of the video. Please register in the office. Evening Hawaiian Luau Thursday, August 31st at 4:30 pm Put on your wildest hawaiian wear and grass skirts if you dare! Enjoy an Hawaiian inspired evening with dinner and entertainment by Lyle Stang. Civil War - Union Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps Friday, September 1st at 1:00 pm The Union Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps will recreate historically accurate portrayals and performances of the musicians and martial music of the American Civil War. Dressed in the uniforms of northern Union musicians and performing with replica period instruments they will educate and entertain. Following the presentation light refreshments will be served. Cost for this event is $3.00. Texas Hold em Tournament Tuesday, September 5th at 1:00 pm The afternoon will begin with a brief refresher Texas Hold em lesson. Following the refresher, the tournament will begin. Cost is $5.00 per person (cost covers the dealer, set up, and chips to facilitating the tournament). Prizes will be awarded to the top players. Seasonal Affective Disorder: Beating the Winter Blues Friday, September 8th at 1:00 pm Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a recurrent type of depression that generally begins in the fall, and continues through the winter months. SAD is triggered by a decrease in sunlight, leading to changes in the body s internal clock, and decreasing chemicals in the body that control mood and levels of alertness. Instructor, Melanie Washington of BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York, will discuss how to recognize whether you have SAD, and what you can do to beat the winter blues. Register in the office. Apple Fest Monday, September 11th at 1:30 pm Let s celebrate the Fall season with an apple dessert and entertainment by Roger Hill. Roger will entertain us with the great country songs. Speed Dating for Seniors Thursday, September 14th 5:15 pm - 7:30 pm If you re a senior who has re-entered the dating scene or who is looking for a new friend or companion, you know how hard it can be to meet single members of the opposite sex. This event is organized specifically for older adults, so you can meet men and women in your age range. To participate please stop in the office or contact the office at Your Vascular Health FREE Health Screenings by Catholic Health Saturday, September 16th 8:00 am-2:00 pm Screenings are open to men and women over 55. Your vascular appointment includes the following health screenings: Carotid Artery Disease, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Peripheral Arterial Disease, Blood Pressure, Cholestrol, Body Mass Index, Pulse Oximetry, Balance Screenings and Bone Density. Screenings are FREE but registration is required. To register for an appointment call HealthConnection at Flu & Pneumonia Immunization Program Tuesday, September 26th 9:00am - Noon Wegmans pharmacists will be administering flu and pneumonia shots at the Center. Wegmans accepts accept almost all major regional and national insurances. (Medicare Part B, Univera, Independent Health, Blue Cross and Blue Shield). Please bring your insurance card with you. Contact the Center at to make an appointment. Letchworth State Park Tour & Lunch Tuesday, October 3rd 8:45 am - 4:00 pm Fall is the best time to take a relaxing ride through Letchworth State Park. Join us as we take a docent led tour of the park on a motor coach bus. The tour will include the park and the Nature Center. Following the tour enjoy a delicious lunch at the Glen Iris Inn. On our return to the center we will stop at Lantz s Bulk Foods. Registration with payment begins on Tuesday, August 8th. Cost for the outing is $45.00.

Pickle Ball (at Windom Elementary School) Monday - Friday 9:00 Noon 3870 Sheldon Rd, Orchard Park A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn. Bocce Couples Team Mondays at 9:00am begins June 5th Mixed Team Tuesdays at 9:00am begins June 6th Bocce is a fun game similar to lawn bowling. It s a game of strategy and skill. Bocce is played at Green Lake the months of July and August. Look for the Bocce Courts across from the Recreation Building at Green Lake. Sign-up in the office or contact the Center at Join Club 99 Tuesday & Thursday at 10:45 am The Erie County Dept. of Senior Services and Senior Nutrition Program have teamed up to present Club 99. Club 99 is a free fitness program offered to those 60 years of age or older. Ray Steck is the instructor who will explain how using the resist-a-band will tone and build muscle. Everyone is welcome! Advanced Tai Chi in the Park (Brush Mountain) Wednesday, July 12th - August 30th at 11:00 am Join us for Tai Chi a form of fluid movements that builds endurance, increase flexibility and balance. This one hour program is for those with some Tai Chi experience, but new students are welcome. Cost $30.00 for a 8 week session.
