A Letter from the Director, Silvia Banos-Aguayo How quickly this year has come and gone. It s hard to believe this is our last newsletter of 2016! With so much taking place during the holidays, it s hard sometimes to not become overwhelmed or experience the winter blues. Socializing during the holidays is helpful in fighting off seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD), a form of depression that occurs during a specific time of the year, typically the winter. A common cycle for SAD involves symptoms that appear in the fall and continue into the winter, earning it the nickname "winter depression". What is the cause of seasonal affective disorder? While the exact cause for SAD is unknown, mental health professionals believe a lack of sunlight, changes in body temperature, and hormone fluctuations result in this cyclical form of depression that resolves when the season change again. ( What s a great way to fight off SAD you may ask? Oftentimes, spending time outside of your typical daily environment helps a great deal. The Malden Senior Community Center is an excellent place to reconnect you with old friends, stay active, enjoy a meal and stay warm during the winter months. Our Winter Celebration is upon us! If you have picked up your ticket for the event, please join us on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Malden Senior Center. We re so excited to have music, food and give-away items for you! Special guest DJ will be Rick Freni! Please keep in mind that we will be checking everyone in at the door. IMPORTANT REMINDERS: Please let us know by December 6, 2016 if you will need transportation to and from the Senior Center for this event. You must have your ticket to participate in the event. If you lose your ticket, please contact us BEFORE the day of the event to inform us.
