1 January News 2015 About the Sumner Senior Center SUMNER SENIOR CENTER Welcome to the Sumner Senior Center. The activities and services of the Center are available to anyone 55 years of age and older. If you are looking for a Senior Center that offers positive changes, wonderful instructors, social interaction and personal training, then our Center is the place for you. Here at the Sumner Senior Center we take pride in assisting you with all the best possible resources we can. We offer an array of different activities and amenities that we think will benefit you not only today, but down the road. Please feel free to inquire about any of the resources that we are currently offering. We welcome your suggestions. CLOSURE: The Center will be closed New Year's Day Thursday, 1/1/15 and on Monday, 1/19/15 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Trips include: Muckelshoot Casino on the 8th, Red Wind Casino on the 22nd, and LeMay Car Museum trip on the 29th sign up in the Activities Book. Join us for laughter therapy with Kirsten McDowall on the 20th! Fyi: Beyond the Borders Bus, NOW goes to Winco the 2nd Monday of each month. The bus leaves the Center at 1:15pm. If you are 55 years of age and have not visited the Center or taken advantage of the activities already scheduled, we invite you to please stop in to see our welcoming facility. 2 Social & Health Care Services Genealogy Class Date: Thursday, 1/15 Time: 1:00-3:00 pm Cost: Class held in the computer room on the 3rd Thurs. of the month offered by Dee Fournier. Please sign up in the binder. Puzzle Table No room to work a puzzle at home? Feel free to join in on the communal puzzle that is always set up in the back classroom. Join your friends in putting together a puzzle. Foot Care Judy McMichael is an RN experienced in senior foot care. Come see her for a complete foot exam & treatment. Sign up. Every other Tuesday. Day: Tue., 13th and 27th Time: By appointment Cost: $25 cash OR check. Book Club! Come participate in our book club the first Thursday of every month. New members are always welcome. Books are no charge. Thank you, Stafford Suites for providing the books! Day: Thursday, Jan. 8th Time: 2:00 pm Computer Lab Our computer lab is open to all seniors. We have four computers available for your use during the Center s open hours, 8am-4pm. Catholic Community Services: Daily Lunch Program: Mon.-Fri. at noon in the dining hall. Suggested Donation: $3 over the age of 60 $5.75 for those under 60 Meals-on-wheels: CCS Footcare: 1/26 call for appt. Blood Pressure Clinic Linden Grove & Franklin Place an Enlivant community to sponsor blood pressure/sugar checks and/or bone density clinic. When: 2nd Thursday of each month no sign up, first come, first served. 11am-1pm Exercise Room We have a treadmill, recumbent stationary bike and hand weights available for your use. Come in and Work out!! Hearing Aid Checks Thank you, Sound Hearing for providing this free service of checking & cleaning hearing aids for our seniors. Date: January 9th Time: 11am Noon Please sign up in the Activities Book! Massage Therapy Reduce pain and stiffness. Get your monthly massage at the Center. Days: Mon., 1/5 & 1/26 Time: 1-3:30 pm Cost: $10 for 15 min. Sign up! Bring a Book-Take a Book Library! The library is self-serve. Participants are welcome to three books per visit. Please return books and donated books to the basket located in the library for our library volunteer to reshelve in proper order. 2

Day: Wednesdays Time: 12:30 4pm Creative Time Come, bring your crafts, visit with other crafters, share your hobby and be creative. Bring your own supplies. Day: 2nd & 4th Mon. Time: 10:00 am Painting Class Come & join other painters with guidance from Lee Killmer. A great group of artists! Day: Tuesdays Time: 12-3 pm Cost: $4.00 Bunco Come play Bunco, a dice game. Bring a friend & have fun! Days: 2nd & 4th Monday in the card room Time: 1-3 pm Cost: $1 Hand and Foot Hand and Foot is the exciting card game played with strategy and wit. Come join the fun! Day: Wednesdays Time: 10:30-2:30pm B -I- N- G-O Play BINGO and win GOOD prizes! Come in early and have lunch then play. Days: Fridays Time: 1-2:30 pm Cost: $.50 per card Pinochle is now ongoing on Tuesdays at 12:45 or Thursdays at 12:45. Join either group or both! Cost: $1 or $3 for tournaments Woodcarving Come use your imagination and create beautiful pieces. Bring your own tools and have fun! Day: Fridays Time: 12:45-3:30 pm Wii Sports!! Join us for Wii Sports in the living room! Days: Mondays Time: 2:00 pm Ceramics Class You will learn how to use fired/non fired paints with a variety of techniques. Fee includes supplies and materials. Day: Monthly, 1st & 3rd Fri Time: 9:00-11:00 am Cost: $3 Per class Ping Pong! The Center now has a ping pong table, paddles and balls for use. Come play ping pong, it s OPEN PLAY...Tuesdays 9-11am Karaoke!! Come join us for karaoke. It s easy and fun. No memorization. The words are on the screen. Sing to hits of the 40 s, 50 s 60 s and 70 s. Don t be shy! Day: 1st & 3rd Tues. Time: 11am-Noon 4

Time: 10:30 am-noon Line Dancing Come try it-you ll like it! Mondays, "Novice" 12:45 to 1:45 (No experience necessary) Wednesdays, Intermediate"/ Advanced 1:00 to 3:00 (Must be Advanced Beginner - Classic & New Line Dances taught) Cost: $3.00 Music Makers Folksy music from the 50 s & 60 s. Come hang out and listen. DAY: 2nd & 4th Wednesdays TIME: 10-Noon SAIL/Senior Aerobics S.A.I.L. (Stay Active & Independent for Life) is a strength and balance fitness class for seniors. Bring a friend!! Days: Mon.,& Fri. Time: 9:00-10:00am Cost: $3 per session Dottie Lee & Fun Country Band Come listen and dance to some old time country classics. It s guaranteed you will have a good time and even tap your toes! Day: Thursdays Time: 10am- 12pm Tai Chi Come try Tai Chi. It reduces the effects of arthritis, lowers blood pressure and improves balance. Days: Thursdays Time: 8:30am Cost: FREE SilverSneakers Classic Improve strength, flexibility, posture and balance. Exercise at your own pace. Get fit!! Free with SilverSneakers membership OR pay $3 the drop in fee. Days: Monday/Thursday Time: 2:00 3:00pm Gentle Yoga Join Barbara a Registered Yoga Trainer for a relaxing yoga and meditation class. We will be stretching, strengthening, lengthening and meditating. Days: Wednesdays Time: 9:00-10:00am SilverSneakers Circuit Upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a Silver- Sneakers ball is alternated with low-impact aerobic. A chair is used for standing support, stretching and relaxation exercises. Day: Tuesdays Time: 2:00-3:00pm

8 Announcements & Information SENIOR CORNER Helen Odman: Helen was born in Dubois, Pennsylvania in In 1962 her family moved to Pacific, WA in search of work. Over the years Helen was married & widowed in They raised 3 children who gave them at least 6 grandchildren, 3 or 4 great-grands, 1 great-great grandson & 1 great-great grand niece born on her birthday. She met her 2nd husband in 1991 adding 3 step-children to her family. She was widowed again in After her children were in school, she enrolled in and graduated from the first ever LPN Nursing class at Green River College. She worked at Auburn Hospital retiring in 1982 and continued to work in several area nursing homes. Hobbies: Helen enjoys TV, crocheting, knitting, sewing and messing around with her plants. She also greatly enjoys time spent with her little dog, Rocky (8 lbs. of dynamite!) Senior Center Member: Helen joined the SSC 30 years ago when it was housed in the Sumner Library, volunteering here and there. Favorite Memory: She has fond memories of volunteering at a sale and having a good time with the other volunteers. Mt. Valley Art Club, Artist of the Month! The Sumner Senior Center would like to recognize Mt. Valley Art Club Artist of the Month, a group collective!
