1 Northern California Koyasan Temple 1400 U St., Sacramento, CA JULY 2014 NEWSLETTER Aoba Matsuri Green Leaf Festival Every June, the Temple observes the Aoba Matsuri (Green Leaf Festival) service which celebrates Kobodaishi s birthday. Kobodaishi (priest name Kukai which means Sky and Ocean ) was born on June 15, 774 AD in Shikoku, Japan. Besides being our Shingon-shu founder, he was also famous as a calligrapher, scholar, poet, artist, and engineer. He established the monastery at Mt. Koya and opened 88 pilgrimage temples for the general public. Considered a genius, he also obtained a very high spiritual level throughout his life. The phrase Dogyo ninin means Together with Kobodaishi. Kobodaishi was able to transcend time and space in order to help people in need; very much like Avalokitesvala (Kannon Bosatsu) who sees the voice of people s suffering and extends her hands to help us. Kobodaishi teaches us that we are not alone; that we live together with Kobodaishi. He can appear as a friend or master or a cane to support us as we walk. Through his vow of great compassion, empowerment, and guidance, we will be able to live meaningful lives. See the attached schedule for specific dates and locations. Special candlelight offerings will be made by the Hatsubon families during the Obon service. The Temple expresses its deepest sympathy to the following Hatsubon members who have passed on since the last Obon service. Hatsubon Member Mr. Yasuji Maeda Mr. Frank Eiji Maruyama Mr. George Imoto Age Hatsubon Member Mrs. Tomi Yamamoto Mr. Tomeo Shibata Mr. Masayuki Sunahara Age The annual Toro Nagashi ritual and pot luck picnic will be held at Sacramento s William Land Park* on Sunday, August 17, 2014, starting at 5:00 p.m. for the pot luck picnic followed by a performance by the Taiko Group at 7:00 p.m. The prayer service will start at 7:30 p.m., and the floating lanterns ritual will begin at 8:00 p.m. The lanterns (Toro) symbolize the spirit of the deceased crossing the river and traveling to the pure land. The City of Sacramento has drained all the ponds at William Land Park for cleaning and repair work. The Temple cabinet has been in contact with City officials and are trying to get confirmation whether any of the ponds will be available for this ritual. A special notification mailer will be sent out to members and newsletter recipients if there is a change in the ritual s location. July 2014 Page 1

Meditation Classes The July Berkeley Meditation Class is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2014, and the September session is scheduled for Saturday, September 6, Rev. Coy instructs the class in both English and Japanese. For further information, please call the Temple at (916) or at nckoyasan@sbcglobal.net. There is no charge to attend; however, donations are always appreciated. The July Evening Meditation session at the Sacramento Temple is scheduled for Tuesday, July 8, 2014, and the August session is scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, The evening sessions are led by Rev. Coy and begin at 7:00 p.m Pacific Rim Street Festival The Koyasan Spirit of Children Taiko Group performed at the 22 nd Annual Pacific Rim Street Festival held in Old Sacramento on May 18, This is one of the biggest performance venues the group plays every year. Twenty-five taiko members, including 12 beginning students, played seven songs for this performance, including solos from students playing for the first time before a large audience. The performance received great feedback from the audience. The Taiko Group will be performing at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento s (2401 Riverside Blvd., Sacramento) 68 th Annual Bazaar on August 9, 2014, starting at 11:00 a.m., and at the Temple s annual Toro Nagashi (floating lanterns) ritual at William Land Park on Sunday, August 17, 2014, starting at 7:00 p.m. From The Fujinkai The Fujinkai would like to express its sincere gratitude to the Sunahara family for their generous $200 donation in memory of Mas Sunahara. The Summer Pancake Breakfast, held in June, was a rousing success, and the Fujinkai would like to acknowledge the following members for their generous donations: Rio Sunahara (kasazuke, mustard eggplant), Betty Okimura (fukujinzuke, orange marmalade). The Temple also expresses it sincere gratitude to Fumi Shigetoshi for her donation of spam musubi; Sayoko Shimada and crew for making makizushi to sell; Caren Yamamoto for Saturday s crew lunch; Frances Nakashoji for Sunday s crew lunch; George Sakurai for donuts and food for Sunday s crew lunch; Debbie Wong-Okabe for ordering and delivering the sausages and ordering food for Sunday s crew lunch; and Bettie Tsuda for donating the margarine for the crumb topping for the apple-blueberry pies.
