1 Published by Greene County Department of Human Services since 1976 MARCH 2017 The following scam has been reported in Columbia County! Don t fall for it if you should receive such a call. An older adult received a call at their home from someone stating they were from the Office for the Aging and wanted to let the older adult know they were the recipient of a legal settlement. The caller confirmed the individual s name, then cited the correct social security number and asked the older adult to confirm the number. Fortunately, the older adult quickly hung up on the caller, without further comment. They then contacted the sheriff s department and local office for the aging to see if there was any validity to the call. The OFA also reported the incident to the county sheriff s department and to NYSOFA for increased awareness. DO NOT BE FOOLED! SAY NOTHING and JUST HANG UP! DO NOT GIVE OUT or CONFIRM PERSONAL INFORMATION and DO NOT ANSWER YES/NO QUESTIONS, ESPECIALLY DID YOU HEAR ME? Report instances of fraud by calling (800) Or visit

5 SIGNIFICANT TAX SAVINGS FOR SENIORS: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE FILING YOUR RETURN NYS Tax Department and Office for the Aging highlight subtractions for senior citizens and retirees filing NYS income tax returns The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance reminds seniors and retirees that certain subtraction modifications may reduce their New York State adjusted gross income, while tax credits they may qualify for decrease the tax due or increase their refund amount. The modifications relate to certain income included in a taxpayer s federal income tax return that may be subtracted when computing the New York adjusted gross income. The details are provided in the NYS Tax Department s Publication 36, General Information for Senior Citizens and Retired Persons. We encourage all seniors to review this publication that s available on our website along with other useful filing information, to help ensure that they don t miss out on valuable deductions and credits, said Acting Commissioner Nonie Manion. Greg Olsen, Acting Director of the New York State Office for the Aging said, Many older New Yorkers are on fixed incomes and it s important that they re aware of this publication, which can reduce their tax liability and help stretch their resources. We re pleased to join the Tax Department in getting the word out about Publication 36. Examples of the subtraction modifications include: The pension and annuity income exclusion: New Yorkers 59½ or older for the entire tax year may exclude up to $20,000 of qualified pension and annuity income from federal adjusted gross income when determining their New York adjusted gross income. Married taxpayers who both receive pension income are each entitled to a maximum pension and annuity income exclusion of $20,000, whether they file jointly or separately. Social Security benefits that are included in federal adjusted gross income are exempt from state and local income taxes and may be subtracted from federal adjusted gross income when computing New York adjusted gross income. Qualified pension benefits or distributions received by officers and employees of the United States, New York State, and local governments within New York State, are exempt from New York State, New York City, and Yonkers income taxes regardless of the taxpayer s age. These are only a few of the many subtraction modifications listed in instructions for Form IT-225, New York State Modifications available at (search: IT 225). Community Action of Greene County, Inc. is a VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site Beginning Tuesday, February 14 th and continuing on Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 13 th, Trained, tested and certified volunteers will prepare income taxes, AT NO COST, for persons earning up to $54,000 per year. NEWS from the ADVISORY COUNCIL to the GREENE COUNTY DEPARTMENT for the AGING The Older Americans Act requires that Area Agencies on Aging establish an Advisory Council for the purpose of advising the agency to develop and administer annual and multi-year plans; conduct public hearings; represent the interest of older persons, and review and comment on all community policies, programs and actions which affect older persons. It offers input on these activities and carefully reviews the plans for accomplishing these tasks. There currently is a vacancy on the Council for a Mountaintop representative. Potential members should have qualities that enable them to function effectively. They should be able to recognize older adults' needs in the community and take an active role in working toward building a continuum care system. Important personal qualifications include leadership, ability to positively interact with others, commitment to representing the interests of older adults, and a willingness to devote time and effort to the council's goals. For further information, contact Terry McGee Ward at At this time, the Council would like to extend their gratitude to Walter Thompson of Windham for having served on the Advisory Council. We wish you good health and happiness in your future.
