6 DIRECTOR S CORNER October 2018 By Bonnie Dudek Fire Prevention Week: October 7-13, 2018 Each year the National Fire Protection Association designates a week in October to raise awareness on fire prevention. According to the association vice president of Outreach and Advocacy, people take safety for granted and are not aware of the risk of fire. At our New Kensington center, we are fortunate to have Jeff Stiffey, Accountability Officer for the Lower Burrell Volunteer Fire Department to help give our participants tips on fire safety at home and while out in the community. While discussing fire safety with Jeff, it came to our minds that our participants at our other centers and satellites could benefit from his knowledge as well. The following tips are being offered by Jeff Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas Test your smoke alarms every month. If they are battery operated, change the batteries annually Talk with family members about a fire escape plan and practice it twice a year If a fire does occur, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL 911 In addition, the NFPA recommends we pay attention to our surroundings while away from home by looking for available exits and taking the sound of an alarm seriously if we should hear one. This year s NSPA fire prevention theme Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware fire can happen anywhere reminds us that fires can and still do happen at home, as well as other locations. For more information from our volunteer resource, please stop by the New Kensington center and visit with Jeff. He would be more than happy to share his fire prevention knowledge with you! In addition, please check the New Kensington Section of this newsletter for information on a proposal made by center Volunteer Larry Rowe for developing a technology class at the center. More information about Larry s proposal will be forth coming as the plan is developed.
