2 LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Friends of PACE, Welcome to the 19 th Annual PACE Research Seminar. Held annually, this seminar is a forum for interaction and exchange of ideas between industry, students, and faculty. We are delighted that you could join us for this discussion and learning experience. The theme for this year is Building a Collaboration Culture. Topics for discussion focus on the following areas: Implementation of new Processes and Technologies from BIM to Collaborative Teams, and Innovation in the Approach taken. During the seminar there will be presentations from both the university and industry communities. Select students will present results from their research projects. Industry members with relevant occupations and experiences will share their lessons learned from recent experiences and the potential impacts on the building industry. Throughout the seminar, you will have multiple rich opportunities to interact with your industry colleagues and the senior class to discuss their research work and their outlook on the building industry. At the conclusion of the seminar, please take some time and complete the seminar evaluation form located on the last page of this booklet. Please make sure to comment on ideas for student research that is critical to your business. This information will help next year s students in discovering topics for further research. 14 S:PACE UPDATE The academic year has been very busy for S:PACE. The organization s efforts in the Fall revolved around preparing students for summer employment and the AE Career Fair. With the help of our industry members, S:PACE was able to coordinate over fifteen information sessions in addition to a Networking Workshop that helped introduce younger students to the AEC industry. These sessions were crucial to educating students while promoting interaction with industry professionals. To date, approximately 83 percent of members are currently committed to summer internships or full time positions. In addition to introducing students to employment opportunities, S:PACE organized its annual Field Trip to the Washington D.C./Baltimore Area. Largely thanks to Barton Malow, Clark Construction, Davis Construction, Forrester Construction, Gilbane Building Company, Southland Industries and Turner Construction, over 50 students were able to visit a variety of sites currently under construction. This Spring, S:PACE organized its annual AE of the Year Event. The pageantry style competition tested the qualities and talents of the program s most creative students who competed for a chance to be crowned AE of the YEAR. Organized to benefit the Sharron Williams Scholarship Fund, the event saw increased audience attendance and participation while bringing the AE student body together. The success of this year s fundraiser was largely due to industry support and sponsorship; S:PACE would like to thank Barton Malow, Truland, Grunley Construction, Gilbane Building Company, Davis Construction, Clark Construction, DPR Construction, and Highmark for their generous donations that helped fund the event. S:PACE looks forward to working with PACE supporters again next year to help continue the program s annual AE of the Year Event. In April, S:PACE is excited to contribute to the Horman Memorial located at the Center for Sustainability. Shortly following senior thesis presentations, student members will dedicate themselves to the completion of the project s earthwork and landscaping activities. This opportunity will be used to help bring students together while taking the time to remember Dr. Michael Horman and his contributions to the AE program and its community. S:PACE is very excited about the upcoming year and we look forward to being more active while introducing the construction industry to more students than ever before! We sincerely appreciate all the industry members that contributed to S:PACE this year. Anything from sponsoring an event to taking the time to answer questions about the industry; without your support, S:PACE would have no reason to exist. We are grateful for the strong relationship that exists between industry professionals and the students. On behalf of the AE program and our organization, I thank you for your continued help and participation. -Anthony Jurjevic, President

15 DR. MICHAEL J. HORMAN AWARD The Dr. Michael Horman Memorial Project is intended to commemorate the impact Dr. Horman had on the industry, his students, colleagues, friends and family during his time in the Penn State Architectural Engineering Department. Located at the Center for Sustainability adjacent to the Pennsylvania Morningstar Solar Home, the memorial will serve as an outdoor gathering and grilling space to host guests and visitors of the Center. The overall vision of the memorial is to capture the spirit of Dr. Horman through his passion for grilling, gathering with those that were close to him and his proud Australian heritage.
