1 CLUB KIWANIS DE GRANBY KIWANIS CLUB OF GRANBY A brief history In 1938 the Montreal Kiwanis Club scouted possibilities to sponsor a club in Granby, a growing industrial and tourist hub of the Eastern Townships region of Quebec. Several community leaders, with Pierre-Horace Boivin (future long-time mayor and builder of Granby; visionary who founded the Granby Zoo) prominent among them, established the Kiwanis Club of Granby which was chartered January 11 th, Charter night was held at the Windsor Hotel on February 21 st, with 65 charter members present. Governor Reg Harris of Halifax presented the charter to the Club s first president, T. Y. O Neill. Three other Lieutenant-Governors and Past President of the Montreal Club Walter Zeller (of the famous Zeller s family) were also in attendance. P.P. Zeller presented the club with its bell, which still carries an inscription with his name today. In its inaugural month, the Granby Club hosted 74 guests representing six different Kiwanis Clubs from two different districts. Notable projects in the first years were: A 30 year old woman crippled since infancy was fitted with an apparatus enabling her to walk for the first time in her life A young boy was supplied with eyeglasses, permitting him to follow his school studies The Municipal Council of Granby was petitioned to start city garbage collection Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, Canadian Kiwanis Clubs, including Granby, were committed to the war effort A mass meeting of citizens was called to form a local branch of the Canadian Red Cross Society Air Cadet Corps No. 312 was sponsored at an annual cost of $1200 Granby Kiwanis took an active part in Victory Bond campaigns Gifts and CARE packages were sent to men and women in the services All the action was not on the war front at that time. Service clubs proved their worth in situations of peace as well as war: The Mile of Pennies (which later became the Mile of Silver) was organized as a fundraiser In 1941 the Club held its first Formal Ball, which became for many years the main social event in Granby Parties were organized for the children of servicemen and women Second-hand clothing was collected and distributed to the needy Milk was provided for all undernourished children in all city schools By resolution, Granby Kiwanis approached the Municipal Council of Granby to pass a bylaw for compulsory pasteurization of all milk for city use

2 War years in any country place greater demands on community leaders. Charter President T. Y. O Neill remained in office for two years (1939, 1940), as did the next two presidents, J. Wright Halpin (1941, 1942) and Georges H. Dureault (1943, 1944) In Georges Dureault s last year as President, the Granby Kiwanis Club sponsored the Kiwanis Club of Waterloo, Quebec. Charter Night was held on November 14 th, with Pete Gunter as Charter President. In the new St-Joseph Hospital in Granby, a 15 bed ward for underprivileged children was endowed at a cost of $1000. The Christmas Seals campaign and the Mile of Pennies each brought in about $1200 that year a not inconsiderable sum in those days saw the end of the war, a time of mixed emotions relief fears but plenty of hope! Does war ever really end? Walter Legge, owner and publisher of the Granby Leader-Mail, was president of the Club in 1945 On October 4 th of that year, he editorialized: Times have changed. True news of the occupation of defeated countries still predominates, but since VE Day a steadily increasing number of stories appear that are not that important; they don t concern war, but still interest every newspaper reader in a way that war never could. In the long days of peace we hope that newspapers will have much of that unimportant news to publish: the first robin a record size pumpkin many golden weddings Centenarian interviews let them come, we love them! In those days, Kiwanis activities were extensively reported in all issues of the Leader-Mail! Begun during the War years, the Agriculture committee greatly expanded its activities in peacetime to include supplying interesting speakers for programs, launching tree a planting campaign for farmers outside the city, and holding garden contests for which the Club supplied seeds and prizes 1946 Under the presidency of William G. Simpson, the Granby Kiwanis Club brought Les Canadiens Hockey Team to Granby to play an exhibition game 1947 With Jules Crevier as president, the Club once again brought Les Canadiens Hockey Team to Granby to play an exhibition game 1947 was also a notable year in that Georges Dureault, Past President of the Club, was elected Lieutenant-Governor of Kiwanis International s Division 8 (Ontario-Quebec- Maritimes) Over $10,000 was raised for charitable causes a very large sum for any year! 1948 Fred Wallace, President for 1948 and an enthusiastic Inter-Clubber, sponsored a new Kiwanis Club in Sherbrooke. Charter Night was June 23 rd, and Fred and 22 other Granby Kiwanians went to Sherbrooke sand presented to Charter President Norman Hunter and his fellow 29 members their new Charter. The guest speaker was T. Y. O Neill, introduced by Jules Crevier and thanked by another Granby Charter Member, Bill Solomon.

3 Besides carrying on established projects such as free milk and cod liver oil to undernourished children, vitamin capsules were made available for the first time. Another first in 1948 was the Peanut Campaign, a long-running Club fundraiser With all these activities, Fred and the Granby Kiwanis Club were awarded an Honourable Mention for Club Achievement by Kiwanis International a fitting way to end their first decade of service to the community 1949 P.
