MONMOUTH COUNTY SHERIFF S OFFICE From the desk of. Sheriff Shaun Golden November 2017 Volume 2017, Number 11 IN THIS ISSUE MCSO RECOGNIZES NATIONAL ALZHEIMER S AWARENESS MONTH SHERIFF URGES SAFETY DURING HOLIDAYS SAFE EXCHANGE ZONE PTSD SEMINAR MCSO GOES PURPLE FOR A PURPOSE AUTISM AWARENESS DONATION CORRECTIONS RECRUITS GRADUATE INMATE LABOR MCSO PARTICIPATES IN MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY CAREER DAY HURRICANE SEASON ENDS MCSO PRESENTS SEVERAL SAFETY PROGRAMS AT POSEIDON EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL NEPTUNE MCSO RECOGNIZES NATIONAL ALZHEIMER S AWARENESS MONTH November was National Alzheimer s Disease Awareness Month. I m proud to say that the Monmouth County Sheriff s Office not only acknowledges the disease during that time, but throughout the year, by its dedication to our Project Lifesaver Program. Project Lifesaver uses radio signals to track people with Alzheimer s Disease and autism when they wander and become missing. It is a lifesaving tool for families who have loved ones with a condition or illness that causes them to wander and can benefit them greatly by the safety and security provided through participation in the Project Lifesaver program. Since its implementation in 2003, which stemmed from our partnership with the Monmouth County Office on Aging, Monmouth County has had eight rescues of individuals who have wandered, all under thirty minutes, the fastest in nine minutes. The program was expanded to include individuals with autism in 2007 with the Monmouth County Department of Human Services. There are currently 158 individuals on the Project Lifesaver program, 46 adults and 112 juveniles in Monmouth County. Each radio transmitter worn by an individual has a unique frequency.
SAFE CARGO, SAFETY SEAT INSTALLATION UNDERSHERIFF SPEAKS AT MANASQUAN HIGH SCHOOL NJSPBA HOCKEY TEAM HELPS SICK CHILDREN SCHOOL VISITS AND TOURS NO SHAVE NOVEMBER MCSO PROMOTIONAL/ RECOGNITION CEREMONY FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT, CORRECTIONS, COMMUNICATIONS, SPECIAL OPERATIONS & IT Sheriff s Officers Joyce Schmidt, Michelle Melendez and Autism Awareness Coordinator Fran Hines visit the residence of the individuals, teach the family about Project Lifesaver and install the wristlet (transmitter). They return in either 30 or 60 days, depending on the model of the transmitter, to change the batteries and check on the condition of the client. Should the client be reported missing, K-9 teams immediately respond with the Project Lifesaver receivers to locate the missing individual. Our Project Lifesaver team, including 911 Public Safety Telecommunicators, who initially take the call when an individual wanders, work diligently to ensure the safety of the individuals on the program. I couldn t think of a better time to commend each one of them for their dedication and commitment to this life saving program. Acknowledging this disease year round helps protect individuals and spares families a lot of grief when locating a loved one who goes missing. SHERIFF URGES SAFETY DURING HOLIDAYS It s a busy time of year with work, shopping and holiday festivities and Sheriff Golden reminds all to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings. The MCSO and partners in law enforcement will have a greater presence at major infrastructures including transportation hubs and shopping centers throughout the holiday season with stepped up patrols and K-9 teams. During the hustle and bustle of the season, it s important for people to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity by calling 911. Don t forget, if you See Something Say Something. Please report it. Visit MCSO Online:

These types of e-commerce sales have created opportunities for criminals. In an effort to increase the safety of residents Sheriff Golden is providing a permanent Safe Exchange Zone that is set up outside of the MCSO, for people who exchange goods, have child custody issues or conduct private property transactions. The Safe Exchange Zone includes two parking spots in the front of the Monmouth County Sheriff s Office, located at 2500 Kozloski Rd in Freehold and is under video surveillance 24 hours a day 7 days a week. PTSD SEMINAR Sheriff Golden was proud to partner with Monmouth University on the program, Demystifying PTSD focusing on the Veteran transition to Law Enforcement, on Nov. 8. The program focuses on how PTSD affects veterans in law enforcement and what agencies can do to help reintegrate them back into the law enforcement profession. Special thanks to Dr. Robin Mama, Dean of the School of Social Work at Monmouth University, Col. Jeffrey S. Yaris, PhD., the Monmouth County Prosecutor s Office, members of law enforcement who attended and all of those who participated.
MCSO GOES PURPLE FOR A PURPOSE The MCSO wore purple for a purpose in November in support Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. According to the Lustgarten Foundation, Pancreatic Cancer Research there are 338,000 cases worldwide, a 1 in 67 average lifetime risk and an 8% survival rate over 5 years. Please support the cause. AUTISM AWARENESS DONATION Autism Awareness Coordinator Fran Hines is always on the go working on autism awareness initiatives or assisting those in need. Here he s visiting the Lakewood Early Childhood Center to donate Ipads and covers, through his foundation for autism, to the special education class which consists of children with autism and special needs.
CORRECTIONS RECRUITS GRADUATE Congrats to the 25 recruits from the 35th Basic Course for County Corrections Officers. The graduation, held at the Monmouth County Police Academy on Nov. 21, comes after the completion of an intense 12 week curriculum that prepares recruits for careers as corrections professionals. To date, 690 corrections officers have completed the Basic Course for County Corrections at the Monmouth County Police Academy. INMATE LABOR Inmate labor crews kept busy the month of November in Freehold assisting Clean Communities, in Howell Township working on landscaping at the municipal building and in the Highlands cleaning up the park. Inmate labor offers much needed assistance to towns at a cost savings.
MCSO PARTICIPATES IN MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY CAREER DAY Sheriff Golden and staff from the MCSO Law Enforcement, Corrections and Communications divisions participated in Monmouth University s career day on Nov. 1 and were pleased to discuss opportunities with students and alumni. HURRICANE SEASON ENDS The last day of hurricane season was Nov. 30. Although New Jersey fared well other areas were hit hard. The MCSO s thoughts remain with those who experienced and continue to deal with the devastation in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. In addition, Sheriff Golden commends our law enforcement partners who are working tirelessly in Puerto Rico assisting in recovery operations through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, EMAC, and, members of the New Jersey EMS Task Force for their dedication in recovery efforts of Hurricane Maria in the US Virgin Islands. It s this type of hard work and commitment that is giving the people hope to move on.
