3 M ARCH EVENT MARCH MEETING Date: Wednesday, March 3 Location: Sawasdee Thai Restaurant Time: 6:00 p.m. Cost: Menu Prices; Students and 50+ year members are half price. [Reimbursed by Local Section at the restaurant] Menu: See menu mailed with this newsletter [electronic version only] Reservations: Please RSVP to Tad Whiteside (tad.whiteside@srnl.doe.gov or ) by Thursday, February 25 with your food order. Directions: 730 Augusta Rd. Warrenville, SC Speaker: Dr. Alton Hassell Program: A Chemist Wanders into Archaeology Abstract: This talk covers the basics of field archaeology, the reasons to dig at Tel Malhata, and some of the results of the several seasons of digging at Tel Malhata. The basics of archaeology in the field include how a dig is set up on site as well as what tools are used and how. Tel Malhata is one of a series of forts across the southern edge of Judah, fortified during the sixth century B.C. Pictures of the site and maps indicating its importance will be shown. Evidence of site use over a range of 6000 years helps to show the site importance and makes the finds interesting and exciting. About the Location: Sawasdee Thai Restaurant is one of the few authentic Thai restaurants in the CSRA and is considered a hidden gem by many Thai enthusiasts. There is a wide selection of reasonably priced menu items however, it is a smaller venue, so to enable them to have the proper ingredients on hand, please let Tad know your entrée selection. 3

4 L OCAL NEWS YCC The Younger Chemists Committee (YCC) will be involved in the upcoming Kids and Chemistry Training workshops March 26th and 27th. The March 26th workshop is tentatively scheduled for either USC- Aiken or Augusta State from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Contact Kim Crapse (education chair) (803) or Will James (YCC chair) (803) for more details and to sign up. I look forward to seeing you there. Also, spring is almost here, which means time for some baseball. The YCC is planning a baseball outing to watch one of the local teams play. Keep a look-out for the date and time. -Will James EARTH DAY Kids Earth Day exhibition will be held at Lions Memorial Field in North Augusta, SC on April 17. We are currently working on the ideas for our booth - any and all ideas are welcome. The event runs from 10am- 2pm, so volunteers will be needed to from about 9am-3pm. Lunch and a free earth day T-shirt are provided by the organizers. I will need a head count (include T-shirt size) by Tuesday, March 2 (nicholas.bridges@srnl.doe.gov). The nonprofit Leadership of Aiken County has an upcoming project to build a "Barrier-free" playground behind the Aiken Library (NE corner of Whiskey and South Boundary) as part of Earth Day. More details to come, but we will be looking for volunteers to help landscape flower beds and/or plant azaleas. If you are interested please contact me (nicholas.bridges@srnl.doe.gov) or Tad Whiteside (tad.whiteside@srnl.doe.gov). -Nick Bridges 4 KIDS AND CHEMISTRY TRAINING WORKSHOP Interested in learning more about educational outreach and hands-on demonstrations? Want to share your personal experience with NCW, SEED, or other educational outreach activities with others in our Local Section? Would you like to see our Local Section more involved in classroom outreach? Patti Galvan from the ACS K-8 Science Office will be conducting two workshops on the ACS Kids and Chemistry Program for Volunteers interested in elementary school and middle school outreach. Kids & Chemistry is a community-based program that brings together scientists and children to do hands-on science

5 L OCAL NEWS activities. The workshops are free and food and beverages will be furnished. We will also need some K-8 students for about an hour on Saturday afternoon to try out our demonstrations if you are a parent or know a child who would be interested. For College Students and Younger Chemist Committee Members: the workshop on Friday, March 26, 5:30-8:30PM will be will be an evening workshop at Augusta State University or USC-Aiken. Contact Kim Crapse (education chair, ) or Will James (YCC chair, ) for more details and to sign up. Contact Kim Crapse (education chair, ) or Linda Youmans-McDonald (NCW chair, ) for more details and to sign up. - Kim Crapse INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS COMMITTEE As a general resource for the members as well as for the public, the chapter web site has a listing of businesses and educational institutions in the CSRA that employ chemists or are somehow involved in the field of chemistry. The information can be found at and clicking on the CSRA Industry tab. Please help us make this list as complete and accurate as possible by providing us with any additions or corrections to the list. If you are aware of any companies that should be added to the list or need to correct any information on the list, please forward the information to Mark.Wagher@srs.gov or click on my name on the Officers and Committees page on the web site. The ACS-SR is planning a local Job Fair, targeted at Chemists, tentatively scheduled for April 23rd. The Industrial Relations Committee is seeking volunteers to help contact local businesses, educational institutions, and job seekers to ask for their participation. If you are in a group that is looking to fill a position, this could be a great opportunity to easily find qualified candidates. Please contact Mark Wagher at Mark.Wagher@srs.gov or (803) if you are interested in helping out. We will also need volunteers for 5

6 L OCAL NEWS the event itself. Further details will be provided as more information becomes available. - Mark P. Wagher HIGH SCHOOL CHEMISTRY I am sure many of us remember our crazy high school chemistry teachers. High school teachers can invoke tremendous amount of interest in chemistry among students. In order to build an ongoing relationship between the Savannah River Local Section of the American Chemical Society and high school teachers in the area, the position of High School Coordinator has been created. As the first appointee and working closely with Kim Crapse, I have been assigned the responsibility of networking with high school teachers. Currently there are no high school chemistry clubs in our area. We are hoping to arrange a workshop by Michael Mury in near future to share information with teachers about ACS chemistry club and other resources that are available. Efforts are also being made to involve more teachers and students in National Lab Day activities. -Neera Young NEW MEMBER BIO Ms. Heather Brant recently joined the Nonproliferation Technologies Section of Savannah River National Lab as an analytical chemist. Prior to her arrival at SRNL, she performed environmental and toxicological research at Savannah River Ecology Lab for twelve years. Her research interests include the fate, accumulation, and effect of metals and radionuclides within ecosystems, along with general areas of analytical inorganic chemistry. She holds a bachelor s degree in biology from the University of South Carolina at Aiken and a master s degree in environmental toxicology from the University of Georgia. She lives with her husband, Warren Stephens, Jr., and six rescue dogs in Beech Island. -Rob Lascola CSRA COLLEGE NIGHT We are looking for volunteers to help with the ACS-SR booth at CSRA College Night. The event will be at the James Brown Arena in Augusta on Tuesday, September 14 from 5 to 8:30 PM. Stephanie Myers will be organizing the booth so please contact her if interested (smyers@aug.edu). - Glenn Fugate 6
