1 Grade 1 Student and Teacher Prizes! Open to all North Richland Hills BISD students. Entries must be received by February 15, 2013
2 Introduction The Recycle More NRH campaign was created to promote recycling at home, work (school) and on the go. Recycling serves two key purposes: It keeps valuable material such as aluminum and paper out of landfills, so this material can be reused in other forms and not wasted. It prevents hazardous materials and chemicals such as lead and mercury from ending up in landfills, which can contaminate soil and leach into our drinking water. Please use this contest to engage your students in discussions about what can be recycled both at home and at school. Please refer to the recycling facts on page 2. Contest Details This art contest is an annual initiative to promote participation in recycling at school, home and play in a fun way. The contest is open to students in grades 1 to 12. All entries must be accompanied by a Contest Entry Form. Prizes Cash and prizes Winners are recognized in each category in each school Teachers of winning students are rewarded Teacher s Survey Please complete the teacher survey to help us improve the contest. Enclose your survey with your contest entries or fax it to Contact Information: Debbie York Neighborhood Services 6801 Glenview North Richland Hills, Texas FAX dyork@nrhtx.com 1
3 Recycling Facts Curbside Recycling A private contractor, Duncan Disposal, provides residential curbside-recycling in North Richland Hills. Residents receive recycling pickup on one of their designated trash collection days. Below is a list of items that should be recycled: Aluminum Cans: Step on the cans to save space in your recycle bin Glass: You can recycle clear, green and brown bottles and jars. Please do not drop off mirrors, window glass, plate glass, light bulbs, ceramics or broken glass. Plastic: Plastic bottles of types #1 through 7 (the plastic type should be stamped on the bottom of the container). Metal cans: Rinse metal food cans before recycling. It is not necessary to remove labels. Newspaper, magazines, catalogs: Dry newspaper (slightly damp is acceptable, but not soaked through) newspapers, magazines and catalogs, telephone books. Junk mail, cardboard, household paper: Junk mail, envelopes, cereal boxes, cardboard, chipboard. No tissues, wet paper or paper contaminated with food products will be accepted. All cardboard must be flattened. Batteries Rechargeable batteries commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, remote control toys should not be thrown in the trash. The following stores accept these types of batteries: Both Home Depot locations (6505 Northeast Loop 820 and 6411 Precinct Line Road) and Batteries Plus 5041 Davis Boulevard. Automotive batteries will be accepted when you purchase a new battery. Batteries Plus will also accept auto and boat batteries. Computers, Printers, Televisions, Cell Phones, Electronics Goodwill Industries accepts working and non-working electronic equipment. This program uses recycled parts to help provide computers to those who may not otherwise have access to the most current technologies. Broken screens on monitors or televisions will not be accepted. The local Goodwill drop off is located at 7201 Rufe Snow Drive. Clothing, Toys, Household Goods, Etc. Practice reuse by donating gently used items. Goodwill, the Salvation Army and other charities accept these items. You may call the Salvation Army for pick up at for large bulky items. Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) Bulbs At every Home Depot store, customers can bring in any expired, unbroken CFL bulbs and give them to the store associate behind the returns desk. The bulbs will then be recycled in an environmentally responsible manner. Special Event Recycling The City of North Richland Hills is your campus resource with portable recycle bins available for your school s events. Call to reserve the bins and receive free bags and recycling incentives. The City of North Richland Hills encourages all residents to practice the 3Rs: Reduce the amount of trash you discard. Reuse containers and products, and give unwanted items to someone who can reuse them. Recycle as much as possible, which includes buying products with recycled content. 2

8 Keep NRH Beautiful Keep NRH Beautiful is a City of North Richland Hills commission dedicated to empowering citizens to make a difference in our community. Keep NRH Beautiful programs create awareness and provide public education about litter prevention, waste minimization, beautification and community improvement. Keep NRH Beautiful is an award winning affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful. Below are programs that the Keep NRH Beautiful Commission offers for school groups: Adopt A Spot - Businesses, civic organizations, scout troops, school groups, churches, youth groups, individuals and families are all encouraged to participate in this grassroots effort to insure a cleaner NRH. By adopting a spot, you must commit to keep your spot clean of litter for one year. Supplies and a street sign recognizing the volunteer group are provided. Green Campus - This program is designed to reward schools that already provide environmental education programs and to encourage others to participate. It serves to educate and motivate both students and faculty towards positive attitudes and behavior concerning solid waste disposal, and to instill in them a sense of personal pride and appreciation for the beautification of school property. Application to become a Green Campus must be done yearly. Qualifying applicants will receive a monetary award of $ to be used for future beautification projects and also a sign to be displayed on their campus. LitterNot Leader - It is a well known fact that people are more likely to litter in an area that has already been spoiled by litter than in a litter free area. Keep NRH Beautiful encourages all residents to do their part to keep our community clean. Volunteer for a cleanup event Organize a group to Adopt-A-Spot Put litter in its proper place Put the lid on your garbage can and recycle bin Remind your friends and family to LitterNot Your business, service organization or neighborhood Association can become a LitterNot leader by volunteering for a litter cleanup event or an Adopt-A-Spot. Environmental Education Grants - The goal of these grants is to encourage environmental education by providing funding for projects. A total of $2,000 will be offered each year. For more information on any of these programs, call or dyork@nrhtx.com. 7
