The theme for this conference is Student Success It s Not Just a Game: Promoting Scientific Curiosity. We are currently accepting abstract submissions for posters, presentations, discussions, and workshops. We would also like to encourage students to share the activities they have found most engaging while learning chemistry. Registration is now open at For the most current information on the conference, please visit Travel and Lodging Information Our Campus The campus is in the heart of the middle Rio Grande Valley, located near the historic village of Tomé, 20 miles south of the Albuquerque airport. The capital city of Santa Fe is 80 miles north of the campus on Interstate 25. The Rail Runner commuter train originates near the campus, with stations in both nearby towns of Belen and Los Lunas, and provides transportation to Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Outlook 2

3 Parking is free on campus and signs will direct you to the Student Community Center and the Career Technology Center for events. You may find driving directions and a campus map at about/campus-map.html. Airport Albuquerque Sunport (airport code: ABQ) is located about 35 min north of campus. There are many hotels located near the airport, but transportation from those hotels to the campus will be expensive (about $40 with Uber/Lyft) or take a long time (shuttles and train). Hotels Isleta Resort and Casino ( ): The Isleta Resort and Casino is located 7 miles south of the Albuquerque Sunport. Complimentary transportation is provided between the hotel and the airport and the Rail Runner train station. Reservations must be made by September 10th. There are seven restaurants located at the Isleta Resort and Casino. Transportation between the Isleta Resort and the UNM-Valencia campus is being organized. Days Inn ( ): The Days Inn is located in Los Lunas near campus. A shuttle will be provided from the airport Thursday night with return trips organized for Saturday night and Sunday morning. There is a free continental breakfast every morning and several restaurants are located within walking distance. Transportation between the Days Inn and the UNM-Valencia campus is being organized. What to Do? Balloon Fiesta: The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta will launch from Balloon Fiesta Park, October 6-14, The 47 th annual event, themed Carry Me Away, will feature more than 500 hot air balloons, of which nearly a hundred are anticipated to be special shape. Pilots from all over the world have been invited to fly in the popular international event. The goal of this conference is to communicate strategies and best practices to infuse interdisciplinary, revolutionary, and even tried-and-true methods in the classroom. 5 Mary Roslonowski, Palm Beach State College, FL Hello Fellow Chemistry Teaching Enthusiasts! I hope your summer has been a fabulous one and that you are gearing up for another innovative Fall term of teaching. Our next teaching/learning conference is at the University of New Mexico-Valencia on Oct 12-13, 2018 for those of you needing a little inspiration! On a side note, there is also a hot air balloon festival going on in the area along with our conference, for those who might be interested. The executive board just got back from a fabulous Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE) at Notre Dame. We had a very productive and informative time at the four day conference from July 29- Aug 2. Many of our two-year college colleagues presented at this conference. It is considered one of the 2YC 3 s official conferences in even years. It was great meeting some of you at our 2YC 3 Exhibit Booth and learning about your teaching activities. The winner of the teaching activity drawing of a 250 dollar gift card to Amazon was Irene Metz from Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, IA. Her exploring computational chemistry activity on the Aufbau Priniciple and Periodic Trends can be found on the website: masongroup.lab.uiow.edu/qcc-everyone. As usual, 2YC 3 sponsored the ice cream social on Monday night for all BCCE attendees in the gorgeous exhibit hall overlooking Notre Dame Stadium. We also held our executive board meeting on Monday afternoon to discuss upcoming conferences and new initiatives for the organization. We discussed specifically how to get new members into our organization and creating a national list of chemistry professors at two year colleges. We also voted on an early Fall conference in 2019 at Miramar College in San Diego, just prior to the Fall 2019 ACS national meeting, as well as for two representatives from 2YC 3 for BCCE 2020 in Corvallis, Oregon. I do want to thank all the executive board members for their constant dedication and commitment to the two-year college consortium. They are consummate professionals in all that they do. For 2019, there are three COCTYC board positions open. Please see the call for nominations information in this newsletter for more information. So you know what you might be getting into: the Chair- Elect-Elect position is a 6 year commitment to 2YC 3 and other board positions are 3 year commitments, which can be renewed twice after the first term if the officer wishes to serve again. Currently, the treasurer position and webmaster position are open for nominations, as is the Chair-Elect 2020 position. All the best for academic year ! I hope to see you in New Mexico!
