The GigaFlood story follows the path of the largest of the Ice Age Lake Missoula floods, when 540 cubic miles of water, 40 cubic miles of ice, and 50 cubic miles of rock, sediment and debris tore down the Columbia River Gorge at speeds up to 65 miles per hour. Thompson traces the influx and exit channels in the areas north and south of the Columbia River Gorge as it raced through, covering the Willamette Valley Rick Thompson with up to 400 feet of water. The GigaFlood left behind many indelible marks on the landscape such as kolk lakes, gravel bars feet high, truncated hillsides, flood channels, and glacial erratics rocks not indigenous to this area. Many of these subtle features were previously unrecognized, though hidden in plain sight. A native Oregonian, Mr. Thompson loves to share the beauty and natural history of the great Northwest. Being intrigued by the land formations, huge boulders and glacial erratics in this area, he embarked on a 20-year study of the effects in NW Oregon and SW Washington of the this largest ice age flood. Though geology is not his profession, the Lake Missoula Floods have become his passion. The formation of Cape Horn Mr. Thompson is President of the Lower Columbia shows the effects of the floods Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute which holds monthly public educational meetings in Tualatin. He was instrumental in identifying and securing signage for several significant glacial erratics in Washington County and has been interviewed for a number of newspaper articles. He has created self-guided driving tours based on his field trips and has authored two books: Iceberg Erratics and GigaFlood The largest of the Lake Missoula floods in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington which is illustrated with his own photographs, maps and diagrams to show you the evidence still visible today from this catastrophic flood which so affected the Northwest.

3 News from Youth Services It s hard to believe that summer reading is now over and the library is gearing up for fall programs. The library had over 300 youth between the ages birth to 16 participate in this summer s program On Your Mark, Get Set, Read! The most popular programs turned out to be Kids Yoga, Mad Science, Maker Kids, Lego Time and the Friday afternoon Teen programs. The library staff noticed a large number of grandparents brought their grandchildren to the library to programs throughout the summer. Thank you. The Dalles community businesses were great sponsors of summer reading prizes. Kids throughout the summer were awarded ice cream cones, swim passes, food coupons and free books (provided by The Dalles Kiwanis Club.) The question now is, are we ready to start working on summer reading 2017? The youth services department is taking a break before fall programming gets into full swing. During this time the library staff and volunteers will start moving the children s collection into the new children s room, programs will be planned and project will get caught up. 4 Programs of interest to adults Third Thursday Book Group This group meets on the third Thursday of the month, at 6:30 p.m., upstairs in the magazine corner. The book they are reading for the September 15th discussion is A long, long way, by Sebastian Barry. In 1914, Willie Dunne, barely 18-years-old, leaves behind Dublin, his family, and the girl he plans to marry in order to enlist in the Allied forces and face the Germans on the Western Front. Once there, he encounters a horror of violence and gore he could not have imagined and sustains his spirit with only the words on the pages from home and the camaraderie of the mud-covered Irish boys who fight and die by his side. Dimly aware of the political tensions that have grown in Ireland in his absence, Willie returns on leave to find a world split and ravaged by forces closer to home. Despite the comfort he finds with his family, he knows he must rejoin his regiment and fight until the end. The book for the October discussion will be The Martian, by Andy Weir. Monthly conversations about the end of life At 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27th will be a screening of the PBS documentary, Seven songs for a long life. Hospice care is rarely associated with singing and laughter, but at Strathcarron it s different. At this remarkable Scottish hospice center, patients face pain, uncertainty and the possibility of life s end with song and humor. Four years in the making, Seven songs for a long life includes a hit parade of tunes belted out by patients and caregivers alike between reflections on life, love and mortality. Sinatra and R.E.M. have never been sung with more heart. The film illuminates a journey we will all take eventually, and shows how the songs we love best can help guide us. Coloring for adults A coloring night, just for adults, is held the second Tuesday of every month. Join us at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13th and explore your artistic side. We ll having coloring supplies on a table in the main part of the library. Coloring it s not just for kids! Mystery/Crime Book Group This group will meet on Thursday, September 22nd at 6:30 p.m. upstairs in the magazine corner. They will be discussing a story by P.D. James. Contact Bob Shonbrun at , or via at: rshonbrun@ci.the-dalles.or.us for the title and more information. Julie Reynolds and Colleen Ballinger lead this recurring, facilitated discussion on one of the hardest things to talk about: death and dying. These discussions take place at 6:30 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month, usually in the library s meeting room. Julie Reynolds has a doctorate in Systems Science, and a graduate certificate in gerontology from Portland State University. She looks at death as a natural part of a person's life, and doesn't think it's scary to talk about. Colleen Ballinger is a Registered Nurse that is a Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse. She has been caring for, and learning from terminally ill people for over 20 years. Free blood pressure check Have your blood pressure checked, free of charge, at The Dalles-Wasco County Public Library on the first Friday of each month from 10:00 11:00 a.m. This drop-in program (no appointment necessary) is provided by Planetree Health Resource Center.
