A top-tier university among 1,600 American institutions surveyed by U.S. News & World Report for 2012, Duquesne is among the top 10 Catholic universities in the nation. It is listed among the top seven schools in Pennsylvania. Duquesne University is ranked among the best schools in the nation in Forbes magazine s 2012 America s Top Colleges list. Based on student satisfaction, post-graduate success and other factors, the Top Colleges list ranks 650 colleges. This year, Duquesne is ranked No. 420 overall and placed No. 153 among 266 research institutions. The U.S. News & World Report 2012 Great Schools, Great Price list ranks Duquesne as No. 43. Duquesne University is one of only 220 institutions chosen by The Princeton Review for its 2012 Best in the Northeast rankings. In the 2012 U.S. News & World Report rankings, high school guidance counselors nationwide selected Duquesne as one of the top 125 undergraduate schools in the country. Duquesne tied with DePaul University as being among the top 15 Catholic schools chosen by the counselors. The University is included in The Princeton Review s 2012 edition of The Best 376 Colleges, which profiles only 15 percent of American and Canadian colleges. For the sixth year, Duquesne was included in The Princeton Review s 2012 edition of The Best 294 Business Schools for the Donahue Graduate School of Business, with an emphasis on sustainability and business ethics. The Princeton Review s Guide to 311 Green Colleges included Duquesne as one of America s most environmentally responsible schools for a second year. The School of Leadership s undergraduate degree is rated No. 2 in Super Scholar s Ranking of Top Online Bachelor s Degrees in the U.S. The School of Nursing has once again been designated as a National League for Nursing Center of Excellence in Nursing Education. The McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts English Ph.D. program is ranked No. 110 by U.S. News & World Report. In addition, the clinical psychology program is ranked No The School of Law is ranked No. 22 of more than 200 schools for its bar exam preparation program by National Jurist Magazine. The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership presented Duquesne University with its inaugural Downtown Champion Award in recognition of service to the downtown community. 1

4 Rankings & Commendations Duquesne University was named to the President s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. This marks the sixth consecutive year that the University has been named to the honor roll, and the third that Duquesne has been included in the category with Distinction. Four of the John G. Rangos School of Health Sciences graduate programs are listed in the top 75 specialty programs in U.S. News & World Report rankings. The physician assistant program is ranked No. 25, the occupational therapy program is at No. 36, the speech-language pathology program is ranked No. 62 and the physical therapy program is at No. 63. The School of Leadership continues to be ranked as a top military-friendly school by G.I. Jobs magazine. U.S. News & World Report ranked the Donahue Graduate School of Business s part-time M.B.A. program at No. 152 of 441. The School of Law s Legal Research and Writing program jumped from No. 10 to No. 6 in the nation on U.S. News & World Report s Best Law Schools Specialty Rankings: Legal Writing Programs list. Its part-time program is ranked No. 42 in the Best Law Schools Specialty Rankings: Part-Time Law Programs list. In addition, the evening program ranked in the top 50 in the nation. DU staff and faculty experts appeared in the media 1,808 times in venues including CNN, the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Economist, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, the New York Times, NBC News and Catholic World Report. For the second time, the A.J. Palumbo School of Business has been named among the nation s top 100 undergraduate business schools by Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The McAnulty College s Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts earned two Telly Awards for its films, The Race That Eats Its Young and We Are All Immigrants. Seven programs in the School of Education received national recognition or full national accreditation by their respective specialty professional association: the mathematics education program and instructional technology program received full national recognition for five to seven years, and the science, English, special education, reading specialist and social studies education programs received national recognition for two years. The McAnulty College s Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies is listed in the Communication Institute for Online Scholarship s Top Ten rankings in Communication Ethics and Communication and Religion. Communication Ethics received a Tier 1 ranking and was listed second. Communication and Religion received a Tier 7 ranking and was listed fifth. Moody s and Standard & Poor s reaffirmed Duquesne s strong bond ratings at A2 and A-, respectively. 2 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

5 Rankings & Commendations In the latest Beyond Grey Pinstripes survey, the Donahue Graduate School of Business is ranked No. 25 among the top 100 business schools in the world for preparing M.B.A. graduates for leadership in social, ethical and environmental stewardship. The Center for Pharmacy Services earned the mayor of Pittsburgh s first Youth Spotlight Award, which honors the efforts of young people in the City of Pittsburgh who work to give back and make a difference in their communities and in the lives of their neighbors. The 2011 Orientation program titled The Foundation is Set Build Your Own Masterpiece received two awards at the Annual National Orientation Directors Association Conference: Outstanding Use of Theme and Best Novelty Item. Duquesne was awarded the twostar Envirostar Award from the Allegheny County Health Department. This pollutionprevention award recognizes the incorporation of sustainability, waste minimization and energy efficiency and more into daily business practices. Several Duquesne publications earned IABC Pittsburgh 2011 Golden Triangle Awards, including an award of excellence and best in show for the DU Magazine, and awards of honor for the 2010 Convocation booklets, the 2010 Admissions viewbook and the Old Main 125th anniversary brochure. The DU Magazine was also recognized by Graphic Design USA and PRSA, and the Success Admissions campaign was honored with an advertising merit award by Higher Education Marketing. 3

By thoughtfully expanding our academic and workplace programs, we work toward our mission of providing students with an education that informs the mind, engages the heart and invigorates the spirit. The Donahue Graduate School of Business successfully launched new M.S. programs in Accountancy and Information Systems Management. The School of Liberal Arts Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts founded a new M.A. certificate program in multimedia writing, which the Department of English built into a new M.A. program. Final approval was received from the Pennsylvania Department of Education for the M.S. program in Biotechnology. Duquesne University obtained approval from Middle States to add Tangaza College, Nairobi, Kenya, as an additional location and partner school for M.A. degrees in theology. In its 15th year of operation, the Summer Undergraduate Research Program of the Bayer School hosted 40 undergraduate scientists for a 10-week-long, full-time research experience during the summer of This year also marked the 15th anniversary of the Bayer School Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium. e University Convocation 2012 Duquesne University Convocation UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

7 Program Growth & Development The School of Nursing presented the second McGinley Conference, Justice for Vulnerable Populations The Immigrant, which attracted more than 200 attendees engaged in addressing health concerns of immigrants and understanding the profound needs of this underserved population. Wellness in Motion, the University s pharmacist-directed medication therapy management program, has grown to include diabetes, chronic pain, GERD, asthma, hyperlipidemia, obesity, tobacco cessation, hypo/ hyperthyroid, osteoporosis, vaccinations, hyperlipidemia and situational depression. The program has accounted for a total of 1,327 visits to the Center for Pharmacy Care. The Center for the Catholic Intellectual Tradition was launched to promote and contribute to the Catholic Intellectual Tradition at Duquesne through faculty networking, programming, research and teaching. The School of Education launched the Sizemore Urban Education Initiative to create an enhanced and enriched atmosphere of dialogic engagement within the school. The third annual Undergraduate Research Scholarship Symposium attracted 144 students who submitted 86 posters for inclusion. Fiscal Year 2012 was the 23rd consecutive year at Duquesne of generating an operating surplus. The Honors College welcomed its largest, most diverse and brightest freshman class in Duquesne history. In addition, the college graduated its first two Honors Fellows and first Senior Scholar. The University established a Title IX Coordinating Committee responsible for oversight of Title IX policies and incidents at Duquesne. The committee, in collaboration with Academic Affairs, sponsored training sessions attended by nearly 200 faculty and staff. The McAnulty College Scholar-in-Residence Program continued to expand. Since 2008, the College has hosted 12 international and six domestic scholars for extended stays on Duquesne s campus while they do research. Of the international, the countries represented have been Kenya, China, Turkey, Germany, Belgium and England. The Mylan School of Pharmacy implemented a revised Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum, the first major revision since the launch of the entrylevel Doctor of Pharmacy program in The new curricular structure facilitates increased active learning and abilities-based assessment in a variety of formats. As part of the University s commitment to sustainability, faculty from the Schools of Business, Liberal Arts, Sciences and Nursing partnered to co-teach a novel interdisciplinary honors course on sustainability. The School of Leadership s Professional Coaching Certificate Program received official approval and certification from the International Coaching Federation. Graduate Admissions continued to be a priority, with the development of a graduate recruitment and promotion plan that included print, radio and online advertising, as well as attendance at local and regional recruitment events. In addition, the first Graduate and Professional Student Orientation for new graduate students was held. A $12.5 million gift from the late Pittsburgh philanthropist William S. Dietrich was announced in October. The gift, the largest in University history, will fund an endowment to create The William S. Dietrich II Scholars Program, providing scholarship funds to deserving students. 5

8 Program Growth Program & Development Growth & Development International students enrolled at Duquesne reached 644 in , a 10 percent increase over As part of this upward trend, new international students increased 17 percent from 235 arriving in to 275 arriving in This significant growth came from a number of countries, notably Saudi Arabia, China and India. The Graduate Council developed a University-wide graduate catalog that was published online. The council also developed guidelines for dual degrees. Gumberg Library co-hosted with the Catholic Research Resources Alliance a national symposium on campus, with presentations showcasing the digital resources of the Spiritan Collection, the Pittsburgh Catholic and library support for international Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation courses. The School of Law established a student-run Appellate Moot Court Board to coordinate all non-trial student competitions. The appellate moot court team that competed in the Second Annual National Energy and Sustainability Moot Court Competition was the champion of the competition. The Department of Theology hosted the inaugural Rev. Pierre Schouver, C.S.Sp., Missiology Symposium titled Mission Today. The event hosted 11 speakers from across the United States. Advancing Catholic Scholarship: A Symposium at Duquesne University in November was cosponsored by the University and the Catholic Research Resources Alliance. The Center for Teaching Excellence celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Creative Teaching Awards. Since its inception, 84 faculty members have received the award. Duquesne Conference Services hosted 14,500 people through more than 90 events. The Power Center Ballroom served more than 32,000 people through more than 200 events, including national conferences, University lectures and receptions and 31 alumni wedding receptions. The University s comprehensive campaign, Advancing Our Legacy, reached $157 million as of June 30, 2012, surpassing the campaign goal of $150 million. These results were achieved on the strength of a record year for fundraising, with $36.4 million in new gifts and pledges received during the fiscal year. Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs and the School of Education collaborated to develop an undergraduate recruitment and discounting strategy for new freshmen in the School of Education that resulted in a 30 percent increase in applications and almost a 100 percent increase in deposits for fall Duquesne Dining Services improved the Student Overall Dining Experience by 6 percent during the fall 2011 semester compared to fall In addition, a student engagement program was implemented within residential dining, including monthly themed meals and student competitions. The School of Leadership completed the State Departmentfunded exchange program with the University of Ghana, in which 22 young American professionals traveled to Ghana to study the environmental and societal impact of extractive industries. The program was highly regarded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the State Department and is being used as an example of how such a program should be conducted. The first annual Welcome Back Tip- Off Tailgate event sponsored by the Center for Student Involvement, Athletics, SGA and nine other student organizations was recognized by the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators. 6 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

9 Program Growth & Development The Center for Healthcare Ethics founded and hosted the first meeting of the International Association of Education in Ethics at Duquesne in May. The three-day multidisciplinary conference brought in speakers from more than 30 countries. The Community Engagement Scholars program was considered by Americorps a model of implementation. It has been offered as a model for other universities. Residence Life continues to address the growing need for oncampus housing, accommodating 3,498 residents in , an increase of 13 students from the previous year. In its first year of operation, the South Side Shuttle Loop Bus sold more than 830 shuttle permits to Duquesne students who reside in the South Side. The result has improved parking and traffic congestion throughout campus. Student Conduct staff attended training on sexual violence misconduct investigation and adjudication; completed conduct board training with more than 35 new faculty, staff and students; and conducted a benchmark survey on academic integrity and student conduct with a percent response rate. A report on the survey outcomes is being prepared. More than 80 percent of freshman commuters became involved in various University programs and activities. This had a positive impact on the retention of these students, which was more than 95 percent from fall 2011 to spring The National Institute for Newman Studies in affiliation with Duquesne University held the first annual Newman Legacy Lecture in March titled Newman and the Restoration of the Interpersonal in Higher Education and drew upon Blessed John Henry Newman s classic work, The Idea of a University. The Bayer School hosted the 10th annual Darwin Day Lecture in February 2012, welcoming an audience of more than 350 for this increasingly popular annual lecture. The School of Law hosted an array of national speakers, including Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Judge Richard Posner, Judge Thomas Buergenthal and Lilly Ledbetter. The School of Education initiated a distinguished award of recognition to be awarded annually to a person who showed leadership in submitting an idea that infused urban education into the school. 7

10 Program Growth Program & Development Growth & Development The Center for International Relations hosted a fall symposium on Italy Then and Now: 150th Anniversary and a spring symposium on Saint Giuseppi Moscati marked the fifth year of the University s staff minority internship program. Since its inception, a total of seven individuals have been hired as interns, five of whom obtained permanent employment at Duquesne. The School of Nursing s second-degree B.S.N. program has increased by 100 percent in the last five years, producing 62 depositors for the fall of In addition, the school s Family Nurse Practitioner Program has experienced a 70 percent increase in enrollment, and the forensic nursing program has experienced a 100 percent increase in applicants and accepted students. The McAnulty College s Pursuing Purpose program, now in its second year, hosted nearly 50 students for a day-long retreat in February. It combined the work of Spiritan Campus Ministry, the College and Career Services in helping students plan their future work as a vocation. During Spring Breakaway 2012, 124 students went abroad as part of their spring semester academic classes. This was a growth of 51 percent over the previous year. Students from all schools and disciplines traveled to London, Paris, Geneva, Rome, Nicaragua and Germany. A Fair Trade Symposium held in March titled The Face Behind the Label was a collaborative effort among members of Campus Ministry, the Department of Theology, the Donahue School of Business and the Honors College, with assistance from Catholic Relief Services. The symposium addressed issues of Catholic Social Teaching on economic justice, environmental concerns, workers rights and privacy. The first annual Student Life Assessment Report, which highlights assessment efforts and outcomes for all areas within the Division of Student Life, was completed. Special Student Services continues to average the highest number of students registered with the office with 202 currently registered. In addition, the office began working with temporary medical conditions. Currently, 25 students are registered temporarily, and numbers and referrals for these temporary conditions continue to grow marked the 10th anniversary of the Foundations of Successful Leadership Program, a successful collaboration between the Office of Human Resource Management and the School of Leadership. The program is designed to enhance and sustain the University s administrative professional workforce. More than 250 administrators have completed the program since The Bayer School participated in a panel discussion hosted by the National Press Club regarding the promotion of diversity in the STEM disciplines and STEM workforce. The School of Law entered into an academic agreement with the Supreme Court of Costa Rica to promote education in the field of international law. The Center for Student Involvement registered a record high of nearly 200 student organizations. The Office of Mission and Identity hosted a pastoral visit by Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik. His discussion focused on the meaning of social justice in the Church and the relationship between justice and charity. 8 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

11 Program Growth Program & Development Growth & Development Human Resources launched the Microsoft Office Superstar Training program, focused on enhancing employee knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. To date, 30 employees have completed the training. Resident Assistants hosted 963 programs attended by 11,120 students during the academic year. These programs were developed to educate students around the pillars of the Duquesne mission statement. Gumberg Library obtained almost 14,000 items from other libraries via ILLiad and E-ZBorrow, of which 4,649 were articles obtained via Rapid ILL in an average turnaround time of 11.9 hours. The Duquesne University Title IX Coordinating Committee assisted with the development of an online sexual violence awareness program for students that went live in November. To date, 6,849 students have completed the program, which is being promoted to all incoming fall 2012 students. Presented by the School of Education, the third annual Barbara A. Sizemore Summer Conference titled Gaining the Tools to Take Action in Urban Schools and Communities featured speakers Dr. Ivory Toldson, Dr. Geneva Gay and Dr. Anthony Brown. A lecture series sponsored by the Office of Mission and Identity on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition continued with a lecture titled The Catholic Intellectual Tradition: Why We Should Care. The School of Law established a Veterans Court Externship Program in the Law Clinic. The Tamburitzans produced a successful 75th anniversary event in March that garnered acknowledgments from many alumni for the group s valued ethnic contributions to communities both local and national. The Bayer School s Center for Environmental Research and Education, through a collaboration with the Small Business Development Center, concluded a successful USAID-funded exchange project with the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico, to expanding capabilities in the areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency for Mexican students, faculty, professionals and businesses to enhance competitiveness in Mexico. 9

12 Program Growth & Development Through the Career Services Center, 3,752 total jobs were posted on DuqConnection, which is an increase of 30 percent of the prior year. In addition, 3,584 users are actively enrolled in the online job portal. Human Resources created a new Hiring Manager Resource Center in DORI to guide managers and supervisors through the process of interviewing and hiring new staff and administrative employees. The Spiritan Division freshman enrollment for totaled 52 students, representing seven different states and Switzerland. The fall term grades of these students reveal that the trend of exemplary academic performance continues: 42 percent earned 3.0 or higher; 72 percent earned between 2.5 and above; and 89 percent earned at least a 2.0 QPA. The Multicultural Program Advisory Council led a program titled Moral Conversations, which included a series of in-depth dialogues about a wide range of controversial topics and social justice issues. The McAnulty College worked to inaugurate Duquesne s entrance into the Lilly Fellows Program, which will provide resources for graduate students in the humanities. Faculty from the Bayer School, the Mylan School and the Rangos School partnered to establish a multi-disciplinary Chronic Pain Research Consortium at Duquesne. The SGA implemented a new program, Dinner and Discussion with the Deans, and continued its Tea Hour Discussion Series with University administrators. The School of Law increased the number of schools with whom it has three-three agreements to include Bennett College, Robert Morris University and Wheeling Jesuit University. More than 105 faculty and staff members participated in programs and events with Residence Life, including the Fresh Eyes and Fall and Spring Study Breaks, as well as more than 84 floor programs. Technology has been incorporated throughout the entire Mylan School of Pharmacy curriculum. All students are equipped with a laptop and mobile device that they use to access electronic medical information and enhance learning in the classroom. The Know Your Numbers Campaign provided 499 participating employees with a $250 incentive reward. In conjunction with the Psychology Clinic, the University Counseling Center offered group psychotherapy and provided clinical supervision to graduate students in the Department of Psychology. The Forensic Science and Law Program of the Bayer School received a $225,000 National Institute of Justice grant to work as a partner in establishing a National Center of Excellence in Forensic Science. The School of Nursing s Doctor of Nursing Practice enjoyed a retention rate of 95 percent, with 85 percent of students graduating within the program s intended two-year time frame. 10 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

13 Program Growth & Development The Mary Pappert School of Music presented more than 200 public performances and contributed to numerous broadcasts on WQED s Performance in Pittsburgh. The School of Law established an Environmental Health Law Journal. Multicultural students have significantly increased their engagement in leadership initiatives, and the number of multicultural students and/ or student organizations that received leadership awards in was the highest it has been in the last six years. The Tamburitzans showcased new Croatian costumes purchased with funds donated by the Duquesne Women s Advisory Board. The School of Law and the Office of Mission and Identity hosted the premiere of Maxo Vanka s Masterpiece: The Murals of St. Nicholas Church, a new documentary film that follows Croatian artist Maxo Vanka and the masterpiece he created on the walls and vaults of a Millvale church. The audience of more than 600 individuals included Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik. Alpha Epsilon Pi, a new Jewish fraternity, was established this past year, helping to diversify Duquesne s Greek community. The School of Leadership launched multiple initiatives to enhance the school and Duquesne s visibility while simultaneously contributing to the skills and knowledge of Duquesne students, staff, alumni and colleagues in the corporate community. Events included a Leadership Breakfast Series, a webinar series and social media outreach. The School of Law enhanced its bar preparation curriculum to include a second-year Advanced Legal Reasoning course and a third-year Fundamentals of Law course, both of which are required for students identified as at-risk based on their first-year academic performance. In conjunction with Public Safety, the University Counseling Center presented a workshop to Gumberg Library staff titled Dealing with Emotionally Disturbed Individuals. The Department of Modern Languages fifth annual Human Rights Film Series this year was titled Dignity and Disgrace. The average attendance for each of the six films in the series was nearly 150. Career Services sponsored three on-campus job fairs and participated as a co-sponsor of five additional regional job fairs. These events offered 1,398 Duquesne students and alumni the opportunities to network with representatives from 539 companies and organizations. In addition, Career Services facilitated 1,096 on-campus interviews by 46 different companies for internship and full-time positions in fields such as accounting, retail, management, marketing, pharmacy and information systems. The Mary Pappert School of Music hosted the critically acclaimed faculty chamber music series Dvorak at Duquesne and, in collaboration with Alumni Relations, an opera night. In a further collaboration with Alumni Relations, the school hosted Up Jumped Spring, an evening of jazz for alumni. 11

14 Program Growth & Development Students from the Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts began working formally with the Department of Athletics both to cover the videotaping of basketball games and to develop plans for better coverage of the games. The Office of Multicultural Affairs held a Diversity Programming Retreat that assisted student organizations in increasing the quality and visibility of diversity-related programming on campus. The Learning Skills Center s Act 101 program, a higher education access initiative, had the highest graduation rate and second highest retention rate of all Act 101 programs statewide. The Mylan School of Pharmacy implemented a new series of continuous professional development courses designed to address professional development, career exploration and student selfdirected learning throughout all four professional years of the pharmacy curriculum. The School of Law established a new Student Ambassadors Program in which current students assist with prospective student tours, orientation, open houses and other events. 12 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

15 Program Growth & Development The women s basketball team recorded its fourth consecutive 20-win season and Women s National Invitation Tournament appearance during the season. The Dukes finished overall and 7-7 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. The team recorded a school record eightgame winning streak, one of which included a win over NCAA Tournament participant West Virginia. This was the first victory over the Mountaineers since The University Counseling Center became an important resource for physical therapy students from India taking CLEP exams to meet licensure requirements. The Department of Modern Languages sponsored the 24th Annual Pennsylvania Foreign Language Conference. Participants from 15 states gave a total of 76 presentations. Immunization services offered at the Center for Pharmacy Care have expanded to include pneumonia and TDaP (tetanus, pertussis and diphtheria), as well as immunizations for international travel. The School of Nursing began its 75th anniversary celebration, establishing the Nursing Hall of Fame with four distinguished alumni. The Duquesne football team completed the 2011 season with a record of 9-2 and was recognized as co-champion of the Northeast Conference. Sorority recruitment hit record numbers this year, with 143 women being placed into the seven sororities, an increase of 45 women. Family of Foundations approved funding for a second cohort of the School of Leadership s Women Religious program, which will be launched in Manila, Philippines, in the fall of The Mylan School of Pharmacy implemented an electronic portfolio and assessment system designed to link student mastery of experiential and continuous professional development activities to the school s competencies and learning outcomes. Revenue for the Department of Athletics was enhanced through increased Duquesne Athletic Fund contributions, men s basketball season ticket sales and corporate partnerships. The School of Leadership continued to enhance and upgrade online programs through completion of an online student resource center and faculty resource center, which included an extensive set of podcasts for ways that faculty can increase their effectiveness in an online classroom. McAnulty College s Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies redesigned entirely the Duquesne Debate Program. The debate team took awards at national tournaments and also started an oncampus series of public debates. The English as a Second Language program successfully completed its five-year interim report to its accrediting body, the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation. It is one of only two accredited programs in the Pittsburgh region, this accreditation constitutes a significant strategic advantage in the recruitment and serving of international students and scholars. 13

Across every corner of campus, our students, faculty and staff complete the hard work of service and outreach initiatives that positively impact disadvantaged and underserved individuals while building a stronger community overall. Duquesne University Volunteer records indicate that campus participation in community engagement is at an all-time high with 8,420 students, faculty and staff completing 248,456 hours of service. The Bayer School hosted the second offering of the SIGMA Science Mentorship Initiative, a student-initiated program that brings African-American high school students to Duquesne to participate in weekend laboratory workshops and scientific career discussions in the biological sciences. SIGMA is another link in a continuum of diversity initiatives in the Bayer School that includes Project SEED, the Bayer Scholars Program and the Bayer School Summer Undergraduate Research Program. The School of Nursing s nine nurse-managed wellness centers continued to serve Pittsburghers in underserved communities through health promotion and disease prevention services. More than 1,500 patients received such services in Since July 2011, the Center for Pharmacy Services has dispensed more than 24,000 prescriptions to 700 community residents per month and 2,379 unique individuals total. Several initiatives furthered Duquesne s ties to Africa, including the development of the Center for African Studies, the appointment of a director for academic initiatives in Africa, the visit of President Dougherty and other administrators to Nigeria and Ghana, the Brother s Brother project support for Africa, and the health sciences service-learning programs connected to Tanzania. The Psychology Clinic, the primary training facility for doctoral students in clinical psychology, provided 4,000 psychotherapy and assessment sessions to more than 150 clients, including students and employees of Duquesne, and children, adolescents and adults living in the Pittsburgh area. These services were provided at low cost, or were free to military members and their families and to members of the Latino community, especially those who face acculturative stress after moving to the United States. The Up til Dawn organization s letter-writing campaign raised nearly $24,000 to benefit St. Jude Hospital. The School of Education participated in a mentoring, tutoring and scholarship partnership with a nearby urban middle school to facilitate high academic achievement and a vision of a future career as a teacher. 14 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

17 Service & Outreach Initiatives A Ph.D. candidate from the Department of Philosophy taught in the philosophy department at the Spiritan Missionary Seminary in Arusha, Tanzania, for the academic year. A partnership between the Bayer School and the School of Education designed to enhance secondary science teachers use of inquiry-based instruction resulted in two professional development sessions for science educators from eight regional high schools. Bracketed by the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the International Day of Peace on Sept. 21, Duquesne s 11 Days of Peace initiative was a campus and community observation of awareness, action and prayer for peace. Through an agreement with the Export-Import Bank of the United States, Duquesne University s Small Business Development Center is providing more possibilities for local organizations to finance and build their international trade when private banks cannot help. During Greek Week, 132 pints of blood were donated to Red Cross, an increase of 37 pints from last year. In addition, more than 4,000 canned goods were donated to the Brashear Association. DUV was awarded a Pennsylvania Campus Compact grant for 15 AmeriCorps Community Fellows who provided 300 hours of service to assist at-risk youth in afterschool programs at Allegheny Youth Development, the Brashear Association, Providence Family Support Center and Strong Women Strong Girls. 18 Service & Outreach Initiatives The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the Bayer School continued its participation in the American Chemical Society s Project SEED by providing summer research opportunities to six financially disadvantaged high school students. Through the Spirit of Health Initiative, the School of Pharmacy provided 272 influenza vaccinations at no cost to adults in underserved areas of Pittsburgh and surrounding communities. Through efforts at six sites at local area food banks, the school screened a total of 807 patients. Services provided to these patients included 504 blood pressure assessments, 484 cholesterol measurements, 169 bone density screenings and 146 body composition analyses. The McAnulty College continued to donate books through Brother s Brother to the Spiritan Missionary Seminary in Arusha, Tanzania. The 22nd annual Spring Clean Up, sponsored by Spiritan Campus Ministry, drew more than 500 volunteers. Community partners included churches, social service agencies and educational organizations in the Hill District. Strategic partnerships established through the Center for Pharmacy Services help underserved residents of the Hill District. Partnerships have been established with nearby senior apartments, senior centers, state health insurance programs, the Department of Public Welfare and more. Faculty and students from the Center for Environmental Research and Education of the Bayer School completed the third Greenhouse Gas Inventory for Duquesne University, documenting continued improvements to the University s carbon footprint. In , the Duquesne Greek community raised almost $67,000 for non-profit organizations in the community. The McAnulty College helped to finance and host the second annual Black Aesthetics event at the Kelly- Strayhorn Theatre in East Liberty in April. The program was titled, A History of the Black Aesthetic. Cross-cultural mission experiences through Spiritan Campus Ministry engaged 64 students in hands-on work, study and reflection during spring break. The mission trips put Catholic Social Teaching in practice in Immokalee, Fla.; New Orleans, La.; Baileysville, W.Va.; and Pittsburgh. More than 2,000 students involved in service-learning provided more than 27,000 hours of community work. The Mylan School of Pharmacy expanded its experiential education program to include service to populations that traditionally have had little access to health care resources. Partner organizations include Bethlehem Haven, Catholic Charities Free Health Care Clinic and the Salvation Army. DUV s AmeriCorps/Vista program collaborated with Uptown Partners to create and sustain the Tustin Street and Uptown Community Garden Project to acquire a Love Your Block grant through the City of Pittsburgh. The Winds of the Future performance of the Duquesne University Bands brought outstanding high school students to campus for a side-by-side concert with Duquesne students. The School of Education continued work on the Undergraduate Urban Teacher Education Program, which aims to prepare a new generation of teachers with the knowledge, dispositions and skills necessary to teach effectively in urban schools. 16 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

19 Service & Outreach Initiatives The Bayer School sponsored and helped to judge the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which brought more than 1,500 high school participants from around the world to Pittsburgh. The School of Nursing collaborated with UPMC Health Plan to initiate a program to reduce readmission of Medicare patients discharged to zip codes served by the school s South Side, Irvis Towers and St. Justin nursemanaged wellness centers. Students in a McAnulty College honors seminar designed a strategic plan for the renovation of the August Wilson birth home in the Hill District. In addition, a service-learning class of the Department of Psychology conducted oral history interviews as part of Hill House s 1,000 Stories project and performed a public reading of excerpts of the interviews. The Learning Skills Center continued its 22-year history of providing service to the community through the Project for Academic Coaching Through Tutoring and the Jerome Bettis Bus Stops Here Foundation. Through the programs, Spiritan Division students engage in a service-learning experience tutoring and mentoring elementary, middle and high school students. 17

20 Service & Outreach Initiatives The Psychology Clinic partnered with the Hill House Association to form CHAAT, Children s Art and Talk groups, in which the clinic s doctoral student therapists work alongside artists and art educators of color with children from families in recovery. This year, CHAAT served 22 children in the Hill District. Faculty from the Center for Environmental Research and Education participated in regional presentations and debates providing education on environmental and health issues associated with the Marcellus Shale fracking industry. The City Music Center has expanded its music technology offerings for high school students and established a residency agreement with the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra. Students and faculty in the Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts did work as pro-bono media consultants at the September 11th Families Association and at the Tribute Center, a visitors center and museum on the rim of Ground Zero in Manhattan. 18 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

21 Service & Outreach Initiatives School of Music students provided community outreach through offcampus performances, including O Come All Ye Faithful at St. Paul Cathedral; the Duquesne University Symphony Orchestra in Heinz Hall; the Duquesne Opera Workshop in Carnegie, Pa.; the Music on Mount Washington chamber music series; and servicelearning engagements at Mercy Hospital, the De Paul School for Hearing & Speech and Providence Daycare Centers. The nine McAnulty College of Liberal Arts residential learning communities engaged nearly 300 first-year students in learning through service to the Pittsburgh community. They learned about governmental programs, nonprofit programs and faith-based programs. Duquesne s participation in the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days raised more than $5,000 for the nonprofit organization. Several Career Services staff members serve on advisory boards, executive boards and committees for local and regional associations, including the Western Pennsylvania Career Services Association, Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers, the Creative Careers Consortium, and the Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber of Commerce. The Center for Pharmacy Care collaborated with Tobacco-Free Allegheny as a member of the Tobacco Cessation Program and collaborated with the Pennsylvania Statewide Immunization Information System to document all immunizations given in an effort to increase adult immunization recordkeeping. Faculty in the Rangos School served on several boards in the local community, including the Center of Life and Pittsburgh Action Against Rape. In addition, several faculty provided pro bono physical therapy services at the Catholic Charities free downtown clinic. Thanks to funding provided by the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 through the Small Business Administration, the Duquesne University Small Business Development Center partnered with CareerLink Pittsburgh/ Allegheny County and the Chamber of Commerce Inc. in expanding entrepreneur training opportunities by providing free workshops in the Pittsburgh area. More than 165 second professional year student pharmacists met with their senators and representatives in Washington, D.C., from Nov. 1-3, to advocate for the role of pharmacy in the improvement of patient health care outcomes. 19

To be sure, our faculty and the work they do plays an important role in building our national reputation. Faculty from the Bayer School received $2.9 million in research grants in , with $560,000 in overhead, to support their scientific research programs. In addition, they published 69 research articles in peer-reviewed journals. Students of the School of Nursing achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners National Board Exam for 2011 graduates of the school s Family Nurse Practitioner program. Faculty of the Palumbo-Donahue School of Business published 68 peer-reviewed scholarly articles in academic journals, presented 72 peer-reviewed papers at national and international conferences, published 14 chapters in scholarly books, and produced one book. The Bayer School sent 18 undergraduates to present their research results at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in San Diego, Calif., in the spring of The meeting provided students the opportunity to network with more than 12,000 chemists from around the world. Students in the Department of Physical Therapy in the Rangos School achieved a 100 percent first-time pass rate on the national licensure examination when the state and national average is between 84 and 88 percent. In addition, overall performance on the national licensure examination exceeded national averages in all 11 practice areas examined. Faculty of the School of Pharmacy were granted $1,065,558 in grant funding, four patents and two national appointments. In addition, they made 56 presentations and published 25 peer-reviewed journal articles, two non-peer-reviewed journal articles, and three book chapters or sections. For the second year in a row, DU CARES received a Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board grant in the amount of $12,450 to be used for educational and preventative efforts. The School of Nursing received a Robert Wood Johnson grant to provide support to under-represented students in the second-degree B.S.N. program. The award of $50,000 will provide $10,000 scholarships to five students. The Gaultier Faculty Fellows program was established by the Office of Service- Learning, and three faculty were selected to serve. Faculty in the School of Education secured grants totaling $1.1 million in new awards from external funding. In addition, they published nine books, 49 chapters and 79 peer-reviewed journal articles, and presented at 146 peerreviewed assemblies. 20 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

23 Grants & Scholarly Achievements Duquesne University Convocation 2012 Duquesne University Convoca The Department of Psychology received a $30,000 grant from the Staunton Farm Foundation and successfully launched Psychological Services for Spanish-Speakers, serving more than 20 individuals, couples and families who have benefited from free psychotherapy, counseling and psychiatric consultation. The Tamburitzans received three named scholarships and gifts totaling more than $100,000. Faculty of the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts published 11 monographs (and three translations of previously published monographs); three edited volumes; 169 book chapters, articles and encyclopedia entries; one documentary film; and two patents. The School of Law celebrated numerous impressive showings in moot court competitions, including the Second Annual National Energy and Sustainability Moot Court Competition (champions and third best brief ), the American Association for Justice Competition (regional champions), the ABA Arbitration Competition (regional finalists) and the Top Gun Trial Moot Court Competition at Baylor Law School. 21

24 Grants & Scholarly Achievements Faculty in the Rangos School published 23 high-quality journal publications, two book chapters and one book. These included peer-reviewed articles appearing in the highest quality physical therapy related journals, such as the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy, the Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Physical Therapy in Sport and World Journal Orthopedics. The Barbara A. Sizemore Scholars and Small Grant Program funded research of 10 School of Education faculty members. Faculty members in the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies hold two state offices, one regional office and three national offices. Faculty members serve as executive directors for a state and a regional communication association, executive secretary for a national association, and editors of regional, national and international journals. The Center for Healthcare Ethics received a $25,000 grant to study and make recommendations involving patient consent for human face transplants. The Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts received Knight Foundation grants totaling $145,750. Career Services staff members attended and presented programs at professional conferences including the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers and the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers. The Office of International Programs multi-faceted Fulbright Candidate Development and Mentoring Program once again produced a successful Fulbright award to a Duquesne student. The School of Nursing received $655,716 through a federal program designed to support graduate students in nursing who plan to pursue academic careers. The funding provided 58 doctoral students with an average award of $14,500. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science received a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a project titled Is That You, Mr. Lincoln?: Applying Authorship Attribution to the Early Political Writings of Abraham Lincoln. In addition, the department s Diversity in Computational Technology project received another $30,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation to continue the project s work with high school students from groups underrepresented in computational technology fields. This is the 11th consecutive year that the project has run. The Tamburitzans received an $11,416 grant from the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts. 22 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

25 Grants & Scholarly Achievements Faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy in the Rangos School served in prestigious scholarly appointments, including senior editor of the Journal of Women s Health, editorial board member for the Journal of Athletic Training, invited manuscript author for Journal of Physical Anthropology and American Journal of Physical Anthropology, and scientific review committee member for the Foundation for Physical Therapy. In addition, faculty members were solicited for scholarly-related professional service, including scientific review panel for the Foundation for Physical Therapy, member of the Multicenter Arthroscopy of the Hip Outcomes Research Network and guest editor for Anatomy Research International. A total of 67 percent of Duquesne s student-athletes achieved a GPA of 3.0 or above, earning a spot on the Director of Athletics Honor Roll for the Spring 2012 semester. Of these 351 student-athletes, 127 earned a GPA of 3.5 or above, and 21 had a perfect 4.0 GPA for the semester. A junior biochemistry major from the Bayer School s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry became Duquesne University s first winner of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. All Department of Modern Languages students who took their Pennsylvania Department of Education exams passed them. Faculty in the Rangos School were recognized with several awards and elections, including the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society Duquesne University Teacher of the Year, the program chair of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists and the secretary for the Academic Council of the American Physical Therapy Association. 23

We are committed to enhancing our campus environment in order to serve more, do more and be more. The A.J. Palumbo Center underwent a $1.5 million renovation of its locker rooms, now the James and Janice Schaming Athletic Center. The Palumbo-Donahue School of Business launched a new school website that, through an improved visitor experience and enhanced messaging, promotes the school s emphasis on the principles of responsible management education. The Mylan School of Pharmacy updated the second floor of the Bayer Learning Center, which includes the new Giant Eagle Center for Pharmacy Practice, the Center for Pharmaceutical Information, the Center for Student Learning and two technology-enhanced classrooms. Starbucks in the Union completed a storefront refresh in July 2011 and introduced hot food selections. The University experienced a $5.3 million net gain from the sale of WDUQ. Proceeds of the sale have supported the establishment of two new endowed chairs, creation of a new endowment to fund stipends for graduate students in Ph.D. programs in the McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts, and additional endowment funding for scholarships to increase diversity in the student body. The Barnes & Noble bookstore underwent a renovation in the fall 2011 semester that resulted in the conversion of approximately 2,500 square feet of floor space from trade books to clothing and gift displays. A $1.5 million renovation of the Keller Fieldhouse at Rooney Field included the football locker room and offices. CTS upgraded the entire campus network, including Internet connectivity, saving the University approximately $1.4 million. In addition, CTS continued virtualization of systems and upgrades of storage systems, saving the University approximately $100,000. Gumberg Library responded to student requests for expanded library hours by opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 1 a.m. on designated days. In addition, the library offered 24-hour study during final exam periods. The Department of Public Safety implemented ARMS, a computer-aided dispatch and records management system, to help improve service within the department. Educational Technology completed 13 classroom upgrades, improved 12 conference and/or seminar rooms, upgraded the 715 Fisher videoconferencing room, and completed 114 Mediasite events and 20 video conferencing events. 24 UNIVERSITY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

27 Operational/Infrastructure Enhancements The Office of the Registrar implemented a number of student self-service improvements to facilitate students ease of providing information and requesting needed documents. Science laboratory and teaching facility enhancements were supported by a $4 million grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the largest capital gift in University history. The third year of the University s 10-year housing renewal plan concluded with significant upgrades to existing facilities. The 17th floor of Towers was completely remodeled, and three more floors of Towers bathrooms were completely renovated, bringing the total to 48 bathrooms upgraded. In addition, 20 percent of the furniture in Towers and 30 percent of the furniture in St. Martin Hall was replaced with more modern, attractive pieces. The bathroom renovations in St. Ann Hall began with 6 West and 6 East. Sustainability efforts in Residence Life included furniture replacement in both Towers and St. Martin Hall being reused, recycled or reduced. Furniture was donated to Allegheny YMCA, First Step Recovery Homes, Goodwill Industries, Boy Scouts and several church groups. Construction Junction took furniture that was not donated to charitable organizations. In September 2010, the Bayer School was awarded a National Science Foundation grant of $1,692,088 to fund renovation of research laboratories, the largest renovation grant in University history. In , phases 1 and 2 were completed, which provided three renovated research laboratories in Mellon Hall. A newly redesigned newsroom for the Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts studentrun Duquesne Duke was dedicated in the fall. Gumberg Library expanded ebook holdings by approximately 75,000 titles using existing budget and added new electronic resources such as African Writers Series, Pittsburgh Courier and CQ Researcher Plus Archive with $225,000 in one-time strategic funds. The Center for Student Involvement, Admissions, Freshman Development and CTS implemented a successful online New Student Activities Survey which allowed new students to view Campus Link s listing of all recognized student organizations. This new paperless initiative generated a high number of new student responses and created a more timely distribution of responses to resident assistants, commuter assistants, student organization presidents and advisors. The Commuter Center was updated with a new color scheme, new furniture cushions and new carpeting. The Department of Public Safety completed the development of a new emergency operations center and training room in the Public Safety building. A $100,000 renovation of a Bayer 25

28 Operational/Infrastructure Enhancements A $100,00 renovation of a Bayer School teaching laboratory on the second floor of Mellon Hall enabled the establishment of a new advanced laboratory course in microscopy to meet the curriculum needs for the increasing number of majors in the Department of Biological Sciences. Enrollment Research and Systems made enhancements to assist prospective and current students as well as staff, including Web-for- Prospects, which allows prospective students to submit an interest form on the University s website that is automatically migrated into the student information system. The Donahue Graduate School of Business implemented a new customer relationship management system to improve the student recruiting pipeline process. CTS successfully migrated the campus from Blackboard 7.3 to Blackboard 9.1. In addition, Blackboard was moved successfully from internal hosting to cloudbased hosting for improved service. Academic Advising became part of the Enrollment Management team in support of a strong enrollmentand-retention model for students. The Department of Physics was relocated to Fisher Hall and the renovated space was dedicated in fall Residence Life applications, invitations to events and forms were moved online, saving thousands of pieces of paper and creating a significant financial savings as well.
