1 Position Description Vice President for University Advancement An exciting opportunity for an experienced fundraiser and leader to join CSU Channel Islands and provide the vision, strategic direction, and management of CSU Channel Islands comprehensive institutional advancement program. California State University Channel Islands, located in Ventura County, is the newest campus in the California State University System. It opened in fall 2002 and graduated its first freshman class spring Current enrollment is over 3,100 students with a future expected enrollment of 15,000. CSU Channel Islands has distinguished itself by creating an entire university that was accredited in a remarkable four years. University Mission Placing students at the center of the educational experience, California State University Channel Islands provides undergraduate and graduate education that facilitates learning within and across disciplines through integrative approaches, emphasizes experiential and service learning, and graduates students with multicultural and international perspectives. To accomplish its mission, the University is creating learning communities that involve all elements of the university, integrating community and university resources, building community-university partnerships, engaging the education community from preschool through community college, providing opportunities for adult education and lifelong learning, and preserving and enhancing the culture and environment of the region. To fulfill this mission, programs and activities are designed to help students to appreciate and interpret the natural, social and aesthetic worlds and to address the highly complex issues facing societies. 2 informed about past, present, and future issues affecting human society and the natural world, and the inter-relatedness of society and the natural world; empowered with the disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge necessary to evaluate problems, the ability to translate knowledge into judgment and action, and excellent communication skills for conveying their interpretations and opinions to a diverse audience; creative in developing imaginative self-expression and independent thinking, with joy and passion for learning; and dedicated to maintaining the principles of intellectual honesty, democracy, and social justice, and to participating in human society and the natural world as socially responsible individual citizens. Life Near CSU Channel Islands Located in the costal plain of Ventura County, CSU Channel Islands is situated near agricultural land. The county boasts nationally prominent centers for high technology and biotechnology and agriculture while major industries in the county s economy include pharmaceuticals, aerospace, tourism, oil, Naval Base Ventura County and other advanced technologies. Ventura County residents enjoy year-round recreation, good schools, a low crime rate and a less crowded life-style. The Oxnard Strawberry Festival, the Camarillo Art and Jazz Festival, the Ojai Music Festival, the Ojai Tennis Tournament, and the Amgen Tour of California Bike Race are famous annual events. The California Rubicon International Theatre Festival will see its inaugural performances in the summer of Ventura County is also the gateway to the Channel Islands National Park. The 1,200,055 combined populations of the counties of Ventura and Santa Barbara will grow to 1,323,100 by The ethnicity of the combined populations of the two counties is about:.5% American Indian; 5.9% Asian and Pacific Islanders; 2.3% African American; 33.8% Hispanic; and 59.8% White. Student Life The University currently offers on-campus housing for about 900 students with more oncampus housing planned. Both residential and commuter students have access to outdoor leisure and recreation programs, drama productions, festivals, musical concerts, guest lecturers and other social events. July 31,

3 Campus Facilities The campus currently consists of 670 acres and over 1.4 million gross square feet of buildings for academic and related use and looks to expand. The majority of the campus buildings were built between 1930 and The architecture is Spanish Mission revival style and this historic appearance will be preserved. Renovation of facilities continues to create classrooms and laboratories and to update the infrastructure. Funding for renovation of the University s existing facilities and grounds is provided through state Capital Outlay resources. CSUCI is known as a Green Campus that is environmentally sensitive and that encourages the use of public transportation, bicycles, and campus vehicles powered by electricity or compressed natural gas. Financial Support CSUCI Channel Islands is publicly supported. The University s current operating budget, which covers maintenance of the existing space, campus planning and educational development activities, is provided from state General Fund resources. Total current state operating support is approximately $52 million. The current and approved Capital Projects for construction exceed $200 million with others in the pipeline. It is expected that the University will raise ten percent of its appropriated operating dollars each year. Private Support The CSUCI Foundation was established for the purpose of supporting and encouraging the University's strategic agenda and institutional mission through raising private gifts to the University. The Foundation is an authorized auxiliary organization of the California State University and in the future may have oversight of general business ventures in support of the University. The 30 member volunteer board assists the University by creating strong relationships with alumni/ae, friends, and partners in the state of California and uses their goodwill, influence, and resources for strengthening CSUCI's mission and goals. The CSUCI Foundation currently has an endowment of over $16 million with a library named for a major donor and the School of Business likewise named for a significant donor. The Site Authority has generated about $80 million to date in support of the university. The President s Circle members and other non-state supporters have been generous in developing the University. To further the growth of non-state support the University will begin to consider the feasibility of developing a capital campaign. July 31,

4 Reporting Relationships The Vice President for University Advancement reports to the President and sits on the President s Cabinet. He/she will have the opportunity to develop and lead a comprehensive Advancement office that will include Development, Community and Governmental Affairs, Communications and Marketing, Special Events, and Alumni and Friends. Position Summary The Vice President for University Advancement oversees and guides the entire range of community and university relationships pertaining to fundraising, advocacy, and development activities for the University. Acting under the direction of the President, the Vice President for University Advancement plans, organizes, directs and coordinates all aspects of CSU Channel Islands external relations and communications and marketing programs, closely integrating them with its fundraising initiatives. The Vice President for University Advancement works closely with the Provost, interacts with faculty, and helps to facilitate and coordinate faculty research and grant opportunities. Key to the success of the Vice President for University Advancement is the ability to identify and develop resources, raise funds, and to provide effective representation for CSU Channel Islands, its programs, initiatives, alumni, faculty, students and its overall mission. Specific Responsibilities In concert with the President, oversees the comprehensive fund-raising programs of the University, the University Foundation, a current staff of twelve, and is responsible for fund-raising success. Specific areas include: Development, Community and Governmental Affairs, Communications and Marketing, Special Events, and Alumni and Friends. Plays a leadership role as a member of CSU Channel Islands senior management team and is a member of the President s Cabinet. Maintains liaison with the Office of University Advancement in the CSU system. In consultation with the academic leadership of CSU Channel Islands, establishes clear development goals and objectives as well as implementation plans. Oversees the creation of annual operating plans, including program priorities, fundraising goals and details strategies for the accomplishment of objectives. July 31,

5 Identifies, recruits, and develops a broad based organization of friends, supporters and fundraising volunteers who are motivated to assist the University in achieving its mission goals. Coordinates the appropriate involvement of administration, faculty, and staff in all aspects of the University s Advancement activities. Provides leadership to the professional and support staff. Organizes the team to achieve the efficient functioning of the office. Develops budgets and oversees their expenditures. Monitors, develops and evaluates staff management team. Ensures clear and consistent messages about the image and branding of CSUCI, its mission, contributions to the community and resources needs. Collaborates with the Foundation, enrollment management, faculty, and university administrators to build the University s image. Provides leadership in communicating CSU Channel Islands needs and accomplishments to federal, state, and local government. Plans a potential capital campaign and carries out its anticipated implementation. Education BS/BA required. Appropriate advanced degree encouraged. Professional Experience The ideal candidate will possess approximately ten years of successful experience relevant to this position. In addition, it is anticipated that the individual will have: A proven record of substantial fund-raising success in major planned gifts, corporate gifts, and particularly in successful personal solicitations; Experience in planning and directing an institution s overall fund-raising and public affairs program; Capital campaign experience; Substantial managerial experience in organizations involved in education, research, healthcare, the arts or the community; Knowledge of and the ability to communicate effectively and passionately about higher education with the ability to interact effectively with diverse communities; The ability to deal effectively with business, professional and community leaders and experience working with leadership in volunteer boards, and with major donors from corporations, foundations, and alumni; Experience in publicity, community organization, and media relations; Broad knowledge of the philanthropic community and the technological tools, resources, and best practices to communicate with this group. 6 Personal Qualifications The individual selected for this role must be committed to the mission of CSU Channel Islands and appreciative of the nature and purpose of a major comprehensive university and its role in this community. The successful candidate will also possess: Dynamic leadership with demonstrated ability to work successfully as a strategic partner in campus-based and external community teams; The capacity to build and nurture relationships, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with all levels of the University s senior management, faculty, students, staff, members of the community, and constituents of collaborative institutions; Strong organizational and management skills with the ability to motivate colleagues and volunteers in the task of university building; Professionalism, impeccable integrity, and dedication; Strong commitment to public higher education and a demonstrated commitment to diversity; Demonstrated abilities in written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills, critical thinking and creative problem solving; Willingness to travel frequently to meet with volunteers and donors on evenings and weekends.
