If you have any ideas, suggestions, special events, etc., please send them to the CIRA Ontario office at the address above. Philosophizing about a snowstorm For those of you on the ciraously listserv you received too many s about people unsubscribing from the list that were inadvertently sent to everyone on the list and not just to me. The net effect had an avalanche effect which made matters worse. The snow has stopped and we are back in operation again. I have learned at least three things from this journey. One, no one wishes to go through problems but as long as things go well we do not always seek to improve things. The list had an avalanche affect because people did not know how to unsubscribe. We are now adding a footer that will automatically go on the bottom of each message sent on the list so that the subscribe and unsubscribe information is always in front of people. The problem called for a solution and the list is better for it. Life is like that. We all love mountain peaks, but it is in the valleys that a lot of growth often happens not much grows in caves so be sure to always stay above ground. Second, several people were down right nasty in their instructions about getting off a list intended to help everyone. Those comments were sometimes hard to take. We need to make sure we are not nasty to others; especially those trying to help you. Third, a number of people sent notes of encouragement, realizing that the avalanche would pass. Those folks were little havens of rest, heated cabins in the middle of a storm. We need to be that haven to the folks we meet. Have a great day, grow from challenges, and be a haven to those you are in contact with. John Byl, CIRA Ontario President A N N O U N C E M E N T S The 2008 Post Secondary Student Leadership Conference will be hosted by Wilfred Laurier Brantford on Friday, Feb. 29th, For more information Greg Stewart at gstewart@wlu.ca Russell Minnis from Ecole St-Jean-Baptiste School in Amherstburg shared the following, To my very big surprise, I opened my latest edition of the CIRA INPUT to find our school had been placed on the cover. After a huge round of high fives with the principal and the secretary we instantly sent copies out to the board and the superintendents. What a feeling it was to proudly showcase our students in one of their favourite settings INTRA-MURALS. The congratulations poured in. The French translation of CIRA Ontario s Recess Revival Resource has been completed by PARC (Physical Activity Resource Centre), September, 2007 and is now posted on the PARC website under Adaptable Workshops. CIRA Ontario is pleased to announce that the 2008 CIRA Ontario Post Secondary Facilities and Programs Conference will be held at Wilfred Laurier University on May 22 & 23,
ICE BOWLING One of the many events that take place during Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech is Ice Bowling. You need a large, icy surface, a saucer sled, a helmet, ten giant wooden pins and teams of five. One person wears a helmet and sits on a sled. The other four people propel the individual and the sled down an alley to knock down as many pins as possible. There are many strategies for doing this, but the most popular one involves two people standing at the foul line, facing each other with the ball (person on sled) between them. The other two people lie on the ice and anchor the feet of the two standing. The standing people take the arms of the ball and proceed to fling them down the alley. The person on the sled can try to steer themselves but must keep all body parts within the sled. Scoring is done exactly as in bowling except there are only seven frames. PRAISE TIPS Take praise beyond generic recognition with these three steps: 1.Make a general remark, such as: That was a great activity, Steve. 2.Tell him specifically what you liked: I liked how you delegated the jobs to the new members of council. 3.Generalize from this specific instance to a character strength: Your ability to involve the whole group will help us throughout the year. I admire that. Following this method tells a person that this specific event is indicative of something you admire about him. It s much more powerful than just saying, Good job. Source: Canadian Association of Student Activity Advisors (CASAA) POST SECONDARY STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD The Award recognizes individuals who have been actively involved (above and beyond normal duties) in Campus Recreation at the post secondary level in Ontario. Nominees must be CIRA Ontario members. Tell them everything. Shared knowledge builds trust and loyalty. Invest heavily in loyalty. Remember that fairness establishes your credibility. Never be too busy to laugh. Nothing gets people through a crisis like a good laugh. Source: Gene H Cheatham 3
WALLACE PUBLIC SCHO WINTER ACTIVE SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS Start every day during the winter months with a tip on how to be active in the winter. As the winter progresses let the students think of more ideas that they can use for the announcements. Make it fun and challenge the students to be more active this winter by walking to school and playing in the snow. 4 WINTER WALK TO SCHOOL DAY Winter is as good a time as any to walk to school. Don't let cold, wind, snow or rain keep you from trekking to school or in your community. Dress properly and practice winter safety and you're ready to go! SNOWBALL DODGEBALL The great game of Dodgeball, but with snowballs instead? Not quite. Due to safety concerns, actual snowballs are not used. Instead, play Dodgeball outside which is sure to be an exhilarating outdoor activity. HOOP IT UP Grab a few hula hoops, and have a contest to see who can last the longest. It's a lot harder when you're all bundled up! SNOW FACES Use handfuls of packed snow to create funny characters on a tree trunk. Wallace P.S. is a small rural school just outside of Listowel, Ontario. It is a JK Grade 8 school with approximately 270 students. The entire population is bussed. The school operates on a balanced day that includes two 20 minute breaks. What does their 20 minutes look like during the winter? On a Monday morning in early February, the Grade 7 and 8 s are headed to the gym for Intramural 3on3 Basketball, while the rest of the school eagerly heads outside. Grade 5 & 6 Intramural Cosom Hockey is underway in a corner of the tarmac area. The supervisor has distributed sticks, set up the nets and dropped the ball. Just to the left, where the plows have left their mounds of snow, the man-made hill is buzzing with crazy carpets and children in snow suits zipping down the short incline. Next to the hockey game are three Schlockey games occupied with eager waiting lines. On the primary junior yard, two boys play tetherball and a few are shooting hoops in the snow.
OL WINTER ACTIVE RESOURCE file WINTER CANADA GAMES DAY CATCH THE SPIRIT! On Friday January 25, 2008, the Canada Games Council and CAHPERD are offering a FREE mini Canada Games Day National School Challenge to all schools. This program is designed to mirror the energy and spirit of the Winter Canada Games. Hosting a Canada Games Day at your school is a fun opportunity to promote physical activity and embrace the winter sports. For more information visit olchallenge/index.cfm The snow covered school yard is full of snowmen, snow forts, and variety of structures being constructed by children sculpturing their own unique creation. The air is filled with shouting, laughing and playful chatter. At the back of the school the hub of activity is centered around the shed which holds a treasure chest of items the children are clamouring to get their hands (feet) on. Child friendly snowshoes are hastily fitted onto students, with senior leaders assisting the younger ones, and within minutes a florescent clad senior leader is leading a small army of snowshoers out on a 10 minute hike. There are two All-Sport nets set up in an isolated area for snowball target shooting, two sets of environment friendly mini hockey nets where numerous students are active in foot hockey games, more manmade hills with sliders, climbers, and tunnel makers. There are senior students taking primary students for sleigh rides and numerous diggers about using the many plastic snow shovels purchased by the school. All accomplished with four supervisors, a few senior leaders, some useful winter toys and an enthusiastic group of children just wanting to have a little FUN. Isn t that what it is all about really? Winter Feels Good in so many ways. It s good for the heart, the head and the soul. Snow sports are a great way to keep children active year round. Whether you're a physical education teacher or recreation professional who wants to offer a new way to keep kids active in the winter time, Winter Feels Good offers several fun and easy ways for you to participate including Learn-a-New-Sport Toolkits for several winter sports. "Winter Feels Good" is a program developed by SnowSports Industries America to show how non-motorized winter sports - snowboarding, alpine skiing, cross country skiing and snowshoeing - can help adults and children achieve health and fitness through the winter months, no matter what their current fitness level is. Consider including some of the following in your evening event: Guest Speaker from a local health organization Climbing Wall Heart and nutrition booths Fitness testing (let students administer) Jump Rope stations Juggling and Speed Stacking stations Family relays (scooters, hula hoops, locomotor skills, etc.) Student-lead aerobic routines Large group dances (i.e. Chicken Dance, Hokey Pokey, etc.) SNOW SOCCER Bill Serbin from Winnipeg recommends using large stability balls for Snow Soccer games. 6 INPUT A Publication of CIRA Ontario
KORFBALL Korfball s originator, Nico Broekhuysen, taught preteen boys and girls in one of Amsterdam s poorer districts at the turn of the twentieth century. Inspired by an early version of basketball he saw demonstrated while attending a physical education summer school in Sweden, Broekhuysen established Korfball in Unlike many other team sports that were developed for single sex schools, Broekhuysen s stroke of genius was to find a simple way of including boys and girls equally within the rules of his game. Nico Broekhuysen s challenge was to organize a co-operative yet competitive physical activity for boys and girls together. Korfball was his solution a quite different path to that taken by those who developed the many other superficially similar but single sex team sports with their origins in schools around the same period, many of which are also played worldwide today. Korfball is a ball sport played by hand. It takes a few moments to learn, but a lifetime to perfect. By passing and quick movement players must elude their personal opponents to shoot the ball through a korf the Dutch word for basket. In the standard game, teams consist of eight players four male and four female. The korf is set in from the end of the playing area, enabling shots from 360 degrees. Players assume either attack or defence roles. After two goals, defenders and attackers switch placing emphasis on the development of all-round skills: each player should be able to defend, attack, shoot and support his or her team-mates. A player defended by a personal opponent is not permitted to shoot, meaning quick shots, based on specific technique, are most effective. Korfball is based on co-operation between players dribbling and running with the ball are classed as solo play and are outlawed. Although contact between players does occur in korfball, that contact is controlled players may not gain advantage from contacting their opponents. Put those lost and found running shoes to good use. Duct tape them to the end of a pool noodle and come up with wacky new games using your noodle. DPA SCHOOL WIDE TOURNAMENTS St Michael s Elementary School in Hamilton offers DPA tournaments each day. Two classes at a time play 15-minute mass games in the gym. For more information contact Gianfranco Mele at melegia@hotmail.com. GYM SCOOTER FUN AND GAMES This book will inspire you to revive those underused scooters. This one-of-a-kind resource was specially written for the elementary and middle school PE teacher with the purpose of providing gym scooter activities that promote fitness and the development of various movement skills. 8 STUDENT TESTIMONIAL Intramural Sports at Trent I wouldn t still be at Trent right now if it weren t for the intramural sports. Last year, I was a transfer student who did not know very many people. Since I was not living in residence, I found it difficult to meet new people. Finally I joined the recreational hockey league. Through that I was able to meet some amazing people. We went on to win the league but to further that these people have become fantastic friends. We got together on a number of occasions over the summer and just recently got back from going to Dominican for reading break. So this year, after the success from playing hockey, I decided to play every intramural I possibly could. Beach volleyball, softball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, water polo, water Frisbee, hockey and basketball. After working full time for a few years playing all these sports and being active has made me feel better then I have in years. Once again through playing the intramurals, I have met some really cool people, and now I m actually dating one of them. She plays just as many sports as I do, and I think that is amazing. School hasn t been much fun for the last two years, but because of my desire to participate in the intramurals, I have stuck with the academics, and I m trying to finish up the degree. My only wish for Trent s intramurals is that there would be even more. They are so much fun, and I m enjoying them as much as possible before I enter the career world, because then I will only have memories, but they will be great memories. Mike Soltermann CIRA ONTARIO OUTSTANDING INTRAMURAL RECREATION ACHIEVEMENT AWARD Applications for the 8th Annual CIRA Ontario Outstanding Intramural Recreation Achievement Award are now being accepted. January 18 February 29, During the cold winter months, we tend to hibernate indoors accepting inactivity as a fact of winter. With excuses like "it's too cold" or "it's too snowy we need to find fun ways to get moving even if it is frosty outside.
