3 PREFACE CIRA Ontario s primary mandate is to promote fun active participation for all through intramural activities. This resource pulls together a workshop on intramurals, followed with examples from four successful high school intramural programs that have received the CIRA Ontario Outstanding Intramural Award. The workshop uses activities that explain, primarily through games, the whys and hows of intramural programming. Most of the game ideas come from various CIRA Ontario resources that are identified in the text. We have also included a Challenge Cup idea that was a great stand alone intramural activity at a high school. Some of the Challenge Cup ideas are also incorporated into the structure and content of the workshop. Ideas from successful high school programs is listed following the workshop and Challenge Cup materials. We begin with providing some informative statistics and comments about how students experienced intramurals- -and you can read the benefits of intramurals in their comments. We follow those comments with answers to the following three questions: 1. How do you organize your Intramural Council...? 2. How do you raise funds for your intramural program? 3. What are two unique, one-off events that contribute to your program success...? 4. What is your calendar of activities (We attach three sample calendars on the end of this document)?

12 CHALLENGE CUP The Challenge Cup is a fun team building and spirit developing activity that I have used in a variety of ways, i.e. as an intramural activity, a Gr. Nine orientation event, and as a classroom activity. Teams compete in a number of zany challenges and accumulate points with the winning team receiving the coveted Challenge Cup at the closing ceremonies. The Cup is actually constructed by cutting a bleach bottle in half and placing the bottom onto the top. The days can be consecutive or you can select a specific day of the week and hold the challenges once a week. DAY ONE: Opening Ceremonies This begins with the march of the athletes, where each team selects a member to carry the team Banner and enter the gym and march around. (When done as a gr.9 orientation the rest of the student population would be in the bleachers and cheer. The Athletes Oath: The athletes would all recite the Olympic oath. In the name of all the competitors I promise that we shall take part in these CHALLENGE CUP GAMES (Olympic Games), respecting and abiding by the rules which govern them, committing ourselves to a sport without doping and without drugs, in the true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the honor of our teams. A special guest would enter with the Olympic flame ( a candle ). A score chart would be prominently displayed. Each team the presents their Team Cheer. Points awarded for: Team Name (catchy, inspiring) Banner (colourful, easy to read) Team Cheer (20 seconds enthusiastic, appropriate, loud, everyone is involved) Courteous and respectful of other teams. Stadium Today: Main Gym

13 DAY TWO: Team Challenges: 1. Crash Mat up and over through the football uprights (the whole team must transport the mat over the entire length of the field). It cannot make contact with the ground until it is a field goal. Teams start at center field, and all team members must run the full distant and return the crash mat to center field. This is a timed event and the time stops when the last member of the team crosses the line. 2. SUV Push Teams are timed with how fast then can push a care around the track. (all members of the team must be behind the wheels ). 3. Feats of Strength progressive long jump each member of the team does a standing broad jump starting from the previous jumpers mark. 16 Secondary Applications Part 2 Experiences: I love getting involved with the intramurals because it is a great way to gain more leadership skills, communication skills, getting to work with a team or in a group and so much more. Jenn of H.B. Beal SS This year in the first season we decided to make a fantasy draft in order to pick our teams. I really like the draft instead of having to be put with people on a team randomly because the draft allows the captains to choose players and build our own teams. This gives us a good leadership opportunity. Alan of TMS As a girl, there is a lot of opportunity to be active and I see it as my job to try to get more girls to come out. Janessa of TMS I also like the program because it gives you the opportunity to bond with other grades and mix with different students that I don t normally get to hang out with. Janessa of TMS Being the commissioner of the intramural league this year has allowed me to learn a lot of my own personal leadership and organizational skills.... Wanting to have a career in sports management, this was a perfect opportunity for me to run and manage a school wide program. Drake of TMS Yet, as fun as the sports were, they taught me more than just about winning. Participation, teamwork, respect and sportsmanship are just some of the many essential things I learned playing in our intramural program. I learned to have patience for others regardless of the athletic abilities of others. All in all, not only is our intramural activities fun, but they teach essential life skills that can be hard to acquire. Andrew of St. Patrick s Intermediate Being a referee taught me how to be a good leader, speak up when I need to and while watching, that you don t have to be the best athlete to have an excellent time. I also learned a lot about being a good team member, how to have good sportsmanship, cooperation with others and respect. Over all, the most important thing i learned from the intramural program is that sports are not all about winning. As long as you enjoy yourself and the people around you are respectful, it does not matter if you lose. Hannah of St. Patrick s Intermediate There are many sport clubs, such as badminton, archery, football, indoor soccer, basketball, pin pong, and swimming club. All clubs run really great, there are always staffs and student leaders that work on it. Felicia Columbia International College It was mainly a class effort, having many people from the class focus on different key tasks in order to create a successful intramural program. Whether it was organizing teams, designing logos, lay-outs, or promoting these activities, everybody came in harmony in order to make it work successfully. We knew that the effort we put in to these activities would reflect in the result and it did. Chris, Sport Leader from Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School I believe as a student, that intramurals are great because it is accepting of everyone. Throughout the school year we have different sports teams that students can try out for, but not all will make the squad, as well as not all can commit to it either. This is where having the intramurals is convenient, because it is during our own lunch hour. So commitments aren t an issue and everyone is accepted into it. It doesn t matter what your skill level is at. - Leah, Sport Leader from Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School For other students it is almost like an escape from the everyday school pressures by being able to play friendly games with their friends. Intramurals are also an excellent way to stay active with all the different kinds of movement, instead of just walking around outside during lunch. Hunter of St. Paul Catholic High school [intramurals] are something that I look forward to each day. At our school, intramurals are very inclusive. They provide something for everyone regardless of their age, gender, size shape, and abilities by giving an opportunity for students who may not be able to make the school sports teams to participate in something. Taylor of St. Paul Catholic High school

17 Intramurals help create a positive, inclusive atmosphere in my school. They provide a sense of belonging, whether I m playing on the court, or up in the bleachers supporting and cheering for my friends. Taylor of St. Paul Catholic High school I ve become a more motivated and hardworking student and the course (Rec Leadership/Intramural) gives me satisfaction of organizing events for other students to enjoy. Jacob of St. Paul Catholic High school Rec Leadership (and Intramural Program) as a course is so vital at our school because it stresses important things such as inclusion, participation and socialization intramurals are for everyone, not just serious athletes. Jacob of St. Paul Catholic High school The thing I really liked about intramurals was that it just wasn t the leader s opinions, it was also the players and referees opinions too. student from Ridgetown District High School

18 Question 1 How do you organize your Intramural Council...? St. Patrick s Intermediate At the starting of the school year, our P.E. department makes a school announcement to invite all interested applicants to apply for a position on our Shamrocks Athletic Committee. In a short meeting, we explain the role, commitment and responsibilities required for the position of athletic committee member. Students submit their completed application to the teacher representatives who consult each other afterwards to select the student committee. A total of students will be chosen. Eden Brook Hill Public School Myself and my teaching partner, Ryan Taylor are the head of our school intramural climate committee. As such we make decisions about the calendar of events, safety rules, etc. Columbia International College Has 4 leadership groups in the school Prefects run community events and help the Athletic Department run after school program Student council administer club funding and organize special events and dances, Residence Council run special events at the residences. 100 leaders selected to attend a Leadership Retreat involving workshops on leadership skills. After interviews they are assigned to a leadership group and then attend a Leadership Camp together to work on their own tasks and plan for events for the school. Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School Have Jr. And Sr. Gym sport leaders who help organize and administrate the day to day leagues. Their responsibilities include set up, clean up, refereeing, and record game results. A Sport Leadership class promotes the intramural program through logos, posters, announcements and Facebook. Ridgetown District High School (7-12) Grade 8 leaders are chosen based on leadership abilities noted form previous years. Their responsibilities include choosing teams, being team leaders, referees, equipment managers, etc. These leaders were representatives of their school at the OELC. This allows all students to show their leadership skills and not just the ones who are chosen by teachers or peers. Students planned out sport schedule for the year. Sign up sheets were used for teams that went around from classroom to classroom. Ran a sport for a month and then finished it off with championships. Each team played a total of 4 games a month unless you made it to championships.

19 Question 2 How do you raise funds for your program...? Eden Brook Hill Public School One of our main fund-raising activities for the school is a school Mov-A-Thon run by our school s dance teacher. Our dance teacher uses leaders from all grade levels to pre-teach dance routines and demonstrate them in front of the larger group the day of. We used to have a company come in to run things, but with the help of our organizing committee we have found it is much cheaper to rent sound and light equipment, purchase our own prizes for the raffles and do it completely ourselves. In other words, this also increases profit.... Selling concessions during those events is a huge profit maker and this helps us offset the high costs of running the actual tournament (awards, first aid, etc.) and sometimes can help cut costs for our students bussing. Columbia International College Activities are included in the student s school fee Question 3 What are two unique, one-off events that contribute to your program success...? Eden Brook Hill Public School Other than all of our games, leagues, and tournaments some of the one off events we do at the school to help promote healthy life styles are our winter and summer play days which involve all students in the school as well as grade 5 leaders to help run events that specifically focus on fun non-competitive co-operative play. We also have Walking Wednesday s where classes can earn the Golden Shoe if they have the highest percentage of walkers in the school. We also have the school Mov-A-Thon that we have already mentioned. Finally we run Jump Rope for Heart Day every April as a fundraiser and awareness piece for Heart Disease as well as a fun athletic event. Columbia International College International Games day it is an indoor event that includes a display of games from around the World, international food tasting, world music, and ends with a fashion show with student dressing in their traditional dress or national colours. Question 4 What is your one-year calendar of activities...?
