1 Spring 2011 Cedar Crest High School Boys Basketball Team SUPPORT your American Cancer Society & Relay! Submitted by: Suzanne Daubert The Cedar Crest High School Boys Basketball hosted a Foul Shots for Cancer shoot on Saturday, Jan. 29, Donations contributed to ACS (from this campaign) totaled $2, History of the event: Team members (7, 8, 9 th grades along with high school JV and Varsity) participate in an annual Foul Shots for Cancer Campaign. They solicit donations from family and friends for shooting 100 foul shots consecutively. It is a joint fund raiser 50% donations going to the basketball program / 50% donations going to American Cancer Society. This is the 9 th year the Cornwall Lebanon School District s Boys Basketball Program has conducted this campaign. Over the last two years (2009 / 2010) a combined total of $2,300 was contributed to American Cancer Society through Relay for Life teams. The goal established for 2011 was $2,500 (which included Foul Shots for Cancer Campaign and donations received during Community Awareness Night). This year, the Falcon Boys Basketball Program Parent Club sponsored a Community Awareness & Pink Out Night on Friday, January 28, 2011 at all home basketball games. We received a great showing of fan support who showed their team spirit by wearing the color pink. Coaches wore pink ties, players had pink socks or shoe laces, and even our event staff participated by wearing the color of the night. One hundred percent of the donations collected ($228.00) during Community Awareness Night were donated to the American Cancer Society. Educational information supplied by ACS was available. WOW $3, exceeded our goal. Everyone was extremely thrilled to have exceeded our goal. A special thank you to the Sidler s who were willing to open their lives and share Eli s (and family s) story of courage, strength and perseverance. They touched all of our hearts and tremendously impacted this effort. We cannot thank them enough. Eli Sidler, CCHS 9 th grade student, and his parents have shared their incredible journey through the struggles, treatments and hope for a cure that comes along with the devastating effects of a cancer diagnosis. Their courage and strength has been an inspiration to the players, coaches and parents of the boys basketball program. We keep Eli and his family in our thoughts and prayers as they continue to fight this disease. Relay For Life Friday, May 20 5 p.m. CCHS Stadium FIGHT BACK Take action with ACS CAN ACS CAN the American Cancer Society s Cancer Action Network is lobbying to pass a tax on other tobacco products. Other tobacco products are those that contain tobacco but are not cigarettes. These can include smokeless tobacco, cigars, pipe tobacco, and bidis. Pennsylvania is the ONLY state that does not tax these products resulting in $180,566,000 lost in revenue since July of 2009, according to pasmokelessloophole.org. Now is the time to take action! For only $10, you can join the movement to tax other tobacco products. Did you know? A 2008 study from the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that smokeless tobacco users have an 80 percent higher risk of developing oral cancer and a 60 percent higher risk of developing pancreatic and esophageal cancer. An ACS CAN table will be set up at Relay under the survivor s tent. Have you whole team sign up for ACS CAN and become an ACS CAN team! Currently there are only two ACS CAN teams in the South Central Region and one of them resides here in Lebanon County thank you to The Poker Chips! This year it is our goal to become the FIRST RELAY in our region to have multiple ACS CAN teams! Show us your Relay spirit by decorating your campsite or RV to the theme of Back to Basics. We want your campsite or RV to answer the question, Why do you Relay? Two winners will be selected: one from campsites and one from RV. Judging will begin at 12 noon on Saturday and the winners will be announced at closing ceremony.

3 ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR RELAY FOR CCHS: THE DO S AND DON Ts RELAY TO-DO s: - Arrival time to set-up your campsite and park at the school is 3:30 p.m. Please avoid arriving earlier; this allows the students a chance to exit the parking lot. o If you team is renting a tent tent vendors may set up starting Wednesday. There is no required vendor list, you may use whatever vendor you would like. - RV s and campers may begin lining up at 3:30 p.m. RV and camper spaces are FIRST COME FIRST SERVED. We do not take reservations for these spaces. PLEASE ENTER OFF OF STATE DRIVE! - Registration opens at 3:30 p.m. - The survivor reception begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Survivor s Tent - At 5 p.m. we would ask that teams begin walking to kick-off the event; the opening ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. - Falcon Drive will close to vehicle traffic at 6 p.m. All vehicles must be removed from Falcon Drive prior to 6 p.m. It will reopen at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. - Teams are welcome to bring their own tables to set up at the designated Fundraising Row areas. These areas are FIRST COME FIRST SERVED. o PLEASE NOTE: If setting up a table for fundraising row, the table legs MUST have rubber footing. Sections of fundraising row are on the track and we don t want to damage the track with metal table foots. - Be respectful of the school s facilities and clean up any trash around your camper or tent sent prior to departing on Saturday. - Security will be on site at the event please look for them in the yellow t-shirts. Committee members will be in orange shirts. If you need assistance at any time during the event, please seek out a security or committee member. RELAY DON Ts: - DO NOT eat or drink on the turf field. - No pets allowed on school property this includes in campers! - No alcohol allowed. - No tobacco use allowed. - No bicycles or roller blades permitted. 4 SUBCOMMITTEE SHOUT-OUTS Survivorship: Desserts Needed & Survivor Challenge! Survivors are happy with getting back to basics this year. For them, it means getting back to CCHS where there is a track for them to walk their Survivors lap. It means honoring them for the brave warriors they are in the fight against cancer, and it means remembering those who have fought bravely but have lost their battle. Keeping our Survivors engaged for the whole Relay has been a challenge. We are beginning the Relay this year honoring our Survivors with the Survivor Reception and lap. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. at the Survivor tent. On Saturday we will be holding a Survivor Sock Hop to encourage the Survivors to come back and experience the closing ceremonies. We are again challenging teams to get cancer survivors registered along with their caregivers. The team with the most registered Survivors will have their registration paid for the 2012 Relay. Please get all Survivors registered ASAP before the event in order for your team to get credit. Also we are looking for dessert donations from teams for the survivor reception. If you have any questions concerning anything about the Survivors, or if you would like to make a dessert for the reception, contact Donna Schaeffer at (717) or dschaeffer1@peoplepc.com Luminaria: Calling all youth volunteers! Seeking youth volunteers to assist in setting up for The Luminaria Ceremony - After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence.
