Auglaize County schools have taken step in right direction with state titles By JAKE DOWLING Sports Editor Local athletics in Auglaize County took a step in the right direction this past year According to research done by The Evening Leader, teams in Auglaize County won six state championship in their respected sports, which happens to be the fourth-most county to win state titles. From the end of winter sports 2017 to the beginning of the new year is the time period the research spanned through. Every sport sponsored by the OHSAA was included in the research except lacrosse, gymnastics and field and ice hockey, since none of The Evening Leader s teams have those sports. Individuals from schools are also included in factoring in state championships, but only for golf and tennis. It does not include individual state champions in track and field, wrestling or OHSAA State Titles All-Time School Total 1. According to the research, Cuyahoga County led the state with 13 OHSAA state title, followed by Franklin County with nine title and Summit County for third with six state titles, which is home of the Akron-area schools and the five state titles by Auglaize County. Hamilton County, home of the Cincinnatiarea schools, finished tied with Auglaize with five state titles and Montgomery County, home of Dayton-area school, finished with four. Not factored into the research but something to keep in mind is the fact that The Evening Leader s coverage schools were also close to more state titles. The Minster girls track and field team finished as runnersup to Anna in the final track event of day two of the state competition. Anna represents Shelby County s lone state title win. The Minster girls basketball team was another team that finished close to, at least state competition, when the Wildcats lost to Jackson Center in a Division IV regional final. The area also had a number of state qualifies, such as two divers from St. Marys, a St. Marys bowler from the girls team and senior golfer Jill Schmitmeyer, who finished tied for second in the state in individual girls golf in Division II play. In track and field, St. Marys Ally Angstmann was a state qualifier in the girls 300-meter hurdles and New Bremen had two state qualifiers in field events. Aside from the number of state title won by teams in Auglaize County, 2017 was a step in the right direction for many schools, such as New Bremen for winning its first state title ever with State Titles By County County Total Cuyahoga 13 Franklin 9 Summit 6 Auglaize 5 Hamilton 5 Montgomery 4 Champaign 3 Trumbull 3 Delaware 2 Mercer 2 Drake 1 Shelby 1 the Cardinals volleyball team capturing the crown in November. 4 4 Minster has the most state championships in girls cross-country with 11 and the most state titles in girls track and field with 12. Those combined are more than every school in the state of Ohio except for 19 schools alone. St. Marys, on the other hand, captured its fifth state title last March in boys bowling and was the first state title won by a St. Marys team since St. Marys is ahead of THE EVENING LEADER STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2018 other Western Buckeye League schools such as Bath, Elida, Kenton, Wapakoneta and Celina. There has been a lot of years that I have coached I m not sure how many but there has been a lot of years with a lot of good teams just to get close, but never make it, said Roughriders boys coach Scott Ross at a recognition ceremony at St. Marys Memorial High School. But to make it this year was an accomplishment I didn t think was possible. The Roughriders made it past the qualifying round a goal for the team coming into state competition with 3,429 total pins, fourth-best in the state. From there, St. Marys defeated Versailles in Baker games to move on to the semifinal round against Woodridge. St. Marys continued to cruise with a victory to head to the championship round against Hillsboro. The Roughriders trailed late in the first game. But a strike in the 10th on the first ball by the Riders anchor and senior Austin Cook, kept the Riders chances of winning the first match in a best of five series alive. It was we get a strike, or we lose, said Ross. That first game was devastating to Hillsboro, who lost to St. Marys Hillsboro Continued on 5

I didn t want to lose the next two games, I didn t want to lose that momentum. I told them, you re not done, until I tell you that we are done. The Riders were champs with the final two games at to The Roughriders were led by a pair of seniors in Cook and Logan Dircksen who propelled a 10-5 St. Marys team in the regular season to the school s first state title Loving Care Tailored to Your Needs since 2011 when the Riders girls bowling team won. Cook was the 2016 WBL Bowler of the Year and Dircksen was a second-team all-league bowler. The Roughriders opened with a 1-4 record with losses to state-caliber teams in Wapakoneta, Coldwater, Versailles and Shawnee before ending the season by winning seven of their final nine matches in West Ohio High School Bowling Conference play, and breezed through the postseason. St. Marys advanced to districts with a fourthplace finish at sectionals and won districts with Kelsey Shannon clinching the All-District team. Along with the boys, freshman Jaden Gibson also competed at state, finishing 25th overall with a 535 series as an individual at the girls state competition. Gibson finished as district runner-up at the Division II district tournament in Rossford the week before with a 615 series, qualifying her to state at Wayne Webb s Columbus Bowl. Gibson rolled games of 197, 194 and a 224. In 2018, both the boys and girls bowling teams for St. Marys qualified for state competition this past weekend and could potentially added to St. Marys five state titles. The Roughriders boys team could also make another run during the season with the loss of just two bowlers after this season concludes. Jack was throwing ground balls near the end of the game which to me that is something you watch for as a coach and the defensive plays were huge. Jack Heitbrink recorded the win for Minster in a complete game effort. He surrendered just one run on five hits and struck out five. Minster scored 34 points four points better than last year s record-setting performance. The record-setting point total was 97 points better than second-place Mount Gilead. McDonald took third and Minster s neighbor Fort Loramie took fourth with 174 points. The title is Minster s 11th state championship, adding to a legacy that includes being the only cross-country program in Ohio (boys or girls) to win more than nine state championships. The Wildcats will return every runner but one from last season s state champion team as Minster will look to make it three straight state cross-country titles. Football CANTON Just two players for Minster were named to the Division VII All-Ohio team earlier this week and those two players took control of the biggest game of the season. And while those two players accounted for four touchdowns and two turnovers that led to scores, the Minster Wildcats are back on top of the football world this time the Division VII mountaintop as the Wildcats and their Midwest Athletic Conference talent shutout Cuyahoga Heights in the second half en route to a 32-7 state final victory at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. Huelsman who was named a secondteamer at quarterback scampered in for two scores on the ground to accompany his 221 rushing yards and threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Austin Brown to get the scoring going, while Isaac Schmiesing a Third-Team All-Ohio cornerback snatched two interceptions that led to two scores to go along with eight tackles and a rushing touchdown to boot. Combined, the two seniors scored all 32 points, while the Redskins and their seven all-state selections were limited to seven points and four turnovers on offense. Huelsman tied Marion Local s Jacy Goettemoeller from 2014 for the most rushing and total touchdowns in a state final at the Division VII level and all Continued on 8

After another slow start to the season with a 4-3 record, the Wildcats found a way to right the ship again rallying off eight straight wins, defeating state ranked team Anna in a soggy season finale, topping top-ranked Crestview in Region 28 play and shutting out MAC foe Delphos St. John s along the way. Minster celebrated its 32nd title in school history third in the football program s lifetime. November: New Bremen Volleyball State Title The Cardinals are No.1 on our top 10 stories of New Bremen was dominate in almost all of its 29 games this season, which culminated in the school s first ever state title in any sport and the first state in the sport of volleyball from any of the six schools in Auglaize County. 9 THE EVENING LEADER STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, in the Division IV state final at Wright State University s Nutter Center. We played well today, I am very, very proud of them, Cardinals coach Diana Kramer said. Our regular season and conference schedule gets us ready for this moment. We have played in we-can tlose-situations since we lost to Fort Recovery in September and we were ready. I felt confident coming into this match. We were prepared and we knew who we were playing against. The Division IV state title may be the first in New Bremen s history, but it also makes it the 122nd volleyball state title within the Midwest Athletic Conference. One match later in Division III play, Versailles grabbed the MAC s 123rd state crown after defeating Coldwater in five sets. The competition has just been unbelievable, Kramer said. New Bemen has had unbelievable teams, but as good as those teams were, there were days when they ended up playing someone just a bit better on that day. As good as you are you have to have a lot of luck to win a state title. It finally all came together today for New Bremen and I am so thankful that everything came together for us. Jones who broke the state tournament record with 47 kills in a single match in the state semifinal also rewrote the state record book again in the final with the most kills in a minimum two matches played with 72, shattering the previous record of 59 kills. Jones finished with 25 kills to go along with six digs. Not only did Kramer, Jones and company make history by winning a state title, but the entire village of New Bremen witnessed the team s greatness throughout the postseason. On the day before the state final, all of New Bremen 1,250 pre-sale tickets were sold out, with additional crimson and yellow faithful flooding the gates prior to the start of the state final. And grabbing the state championship was just a microcosm of the Cardinals season. New Bremen lost just one match all year to No. 6 ranked Fort Recovery and dropped just six sets in 29 games. The Cardinals dropped two sets in a match once in a 3-2 win over Division III No.1 Coldwater. New Bremen ended its remarkable season winning 18 straight matches and defeating eight different state-ranked teams. Seniors Paige Jones, Julia Goettemoeller and Tara Springer are the three players the Cardinals will lose next season in defending their title, but Kramer and company will retain their nucleus of players, especially the young net players of Taylor Paul, Rachel Kremer, Macy Puthoff and Elli Roetgerman. 10 10 THE EVENING LEADER STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2018 Air, space museum to mark anniversary By A.J. HECHT Staff Writer WAPAKONETA The Armstrong Air and Space Museum is one of the premier attractions in Auglaize County: It s a historical center; it s an economic center; it s a cultural center; above of all, it s an educational center. One of it s primary functions is teaching, whether its for field trips, special events, or just a weekend daytrip. The classroom is basically the core of the museum, Executive Director Chris Burton said. This classroom has been used for the last 20 years. It s done a lot of good work, but classrooms changed a lot in the last 20 years. As time has worn on, the room currently used for educational purposes which was not a part of the original design of the museum has lost a bit of its functionality. There are three outlets, there s no water supply, we ve got a a big concrete wall which is very inflexible, Burton said. We ve made some improve- Continued on 11 Industrial & Welding Supplies Free Your Mind From Worries! 11 THE EVENING LEADER STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, ments in terms of tables and chairs, but in terms of size, it s very small. We need a better classroom. And with 2019 and the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong s first step looming on the horizon, Burton and his staff are taking the opportunity to make those much needed improvements. Their ongoing capital funding campaign is to hopefully raise enough money to make those changes likely around $4 million and have a new, modern classroom by the time the anniversary comes around next July. There are several areas in which Burton and his staff wish to address with the new classroom. One of the priorities is size. Engineering takes up a lot of space; there are projects that are ongoing projects, tinkering and robotics, Burton said. You need large table spaces for communal work. And this falls short on all of those things. The proposed room will be roughly 1,300 square feet, tripling the size of the current classroom and making room for up to 75 students at a time. There would also be a collapsible wall dividing the middle of the room, which would give the museum some much needed flexibility. One side could be middle school, high school friendly; larger chairs, chem sinks, bunson burners, to do that kind of stuff, high end robotics programing could all be over there, Burton said. The other side could be less technological, more engaging for a younger audience, but then also just to have the whole thing available for your big groups. The theatre in the museum can already hold 80 people, but that doesn t always help. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn t, Burton said. If you want people to get up and walk around, the theatre is not the place to do that. Location is another big issue with the current classroom space. This is the absolutely farthest place you can be from the front door and from the restroom in the museum; it s a big circle and we are at opposite ends of the circle; there s no shortcut, Burton said. We re also looking to locate that classroom on the west side of the museum so it can be a part of the lesson plans. A lot of times we ll be inside doing something that has to go outside. Whether it s the egg drop, or a model rocket, we ll have easy access to get outside and then back into the classroom. We lose five minutes each time going in and out. But education in the museum isn t limited to the classroom and those activities. With funds raised in the capital project, the museum also plans to expand the Modern Space Gallery. The museum is constantly changing; our subject matter is changing, Burton said. We always talk about the moon landing, but so many things have happened since the moon landing. We need to incorporate many of those things. We know that we can t talk about everything. No space museum could ever. There s so many things happening all of the time. But we need to do a better job of talking about what has happened. Maybe it s the new Chinese space station, maybe it s Space X, he added. Whatever that is, that s what we need to be talking about. Size is also an issue in the gallery, as the museum continues to outgrow it s space. It s just not large enough to do those things, he said. We just really need to expand what s available from an exhibit standpoint. HEARING CARE IS HEALTH CARE Confused about whom you should trust your hearing health to? LET US HELP. 15 THE EVENING LEADER STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, Garmann/Miller looks ahead to school work MINSTER Garmann/Miller and Associates Inc. has been in operation since 1993 and started 2018 by celebrating 25 years in business. What began as a two-man operation at the corner of Fourth and Lincoln streets in Minster has grown to more than 50 employees at its current location, 38 S. Lincoln Drive. The company has seen continuous growth year after year and expects to see the same again this year. The fullservice architectural and engineering firm employs more than 50 people including registered architects, landscape architects, designers, professional engineers, marketing, graphic design, construction administrators and administrative personnel. In December 2016, Garmann/Miller made a leadership transition, naming Eric Baltzell, chief executive officer, and Chris Monnin, chief operating officer. This change allows company founders, Brad Garmann and Bruce Miller, to remain as corporate officers while concentrating on client needs in their role as project principals. Garmann/Miller continues to specialize in educational projects and this year looks forward to designing a new elementary school for New Bremen Local Schools, as well as renovations to Minster Junior/Senior High School and numerous projects for the Southwest Licking School District east of Columbus. The company is also working with several school districts on pre-bond issues for potential projects and planning for their future. Recent project requests have been for athletic buildings and facility upgrades. In January, students and staff at Liberty Center Local Schools started the new year in a brand new more than 158,000 square foot pre-kindergarten to 12 building. Fostoria City Schools will soon begin construction on a new junior/senior high school as well as renovations to their pre-kindergarten to sixth-grade facility. The new pre-kindergarten to 12 school for Ayersville Local Guiding Auglaize County Towards a Healthier Future! 214 S. Wagner Avenue Wapakoneta, OH Schools is well under construction and will open in the fall. The market is not limited to the educational sector for Garmann/Miller as it continues to build a solid reputation with municipalities and renovating county courthouses across northwest Ohio. Recent municipal projects include the new village of New Bremen Police and EMS facility and the truck garage for Cynthian Township. The Ohio Department of Transportation facilities in Greenville, Paulding and Hicksville opened in the last year, and have been heavily used this winter. Facilities in Tuscarawas County and Coshocton are under construction. For the last several years, Garmann/Miller has also been working with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources on capital improvement projects throughout the state. Garmann/Miller has maintained its membership to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) since The USGBC works to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built, and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life. Through the LEED green building certification program, Garmann/Miller has achieved eight LEED Gold Certified projects and nine LEED Silver projects. Several other school projects are LEED-registered under the program and upon completion will apply to become certified projects. Garmann/Miller has seven staff members that have achieved LEED Professional credentials by passing a professional exam. Along with all the major projects, numerous other P.O. Box Havemann Rd. Celina, OH fax PUCO #65933-HG TM & 2015 AWGI LLC U.S. DOT No smaller and private projects and studies were also complete this past year and several other opportunities are in design or set to begin soon. To find out more information about Garmann/Miller and their projects, visit their updated website GarmannMiller.com or like them on Facebook.
