2 Coliseum undergoes renovations In September 2015, Jacksonville State University completed a $2.4 million renovation to Pete Mathews Coliseum that included new seating and flooring as well as other improvements. This follows $1.5 million of improvements last year that added air conditioning and improved lighting in the arena. All 2,300 seats located along the sides of the court will feature chair backs with new bleachers behind each baseline. The coliseum s updated seating capacity totals 3,600. The renovations will result in a better game experience for the fans, players, and coaches. Fans will notice improved sight lines with unobstructed views due to increased elevations and concourses located under the stands for entering and exiting. Several handicap seating and viewing areas have been added around the coliseum. Players and coaches will experience a new world-class playing surface as well as new locker rooms and film/meeting rooms. Along with securing Jacksonville as the continuing location of the Calhoun County and Northeast Regional Basketball Tournaments, the renovations will allow the University and City to market the facility as host for other events. Several area high schools have already scheduled to use the coliseum for upcoming graduation ceremonies. City Council President Mark Jones, who also serves as JSU s Director of Recreational Sports, says, Being responsible for this facility since 1984, these upgrades are like a dream come true. It is almost like having a new facility. Be sure to check out the JSU Men s and Women s home basketball schedules and make plans to attend. Library
