2 WELCOME There s a lot happening on our First Week schedule, so get ready to begin the next adventure of your lifetime your career at Bentley University. First Week 2015 is a program designed to make your transition to university life as easy as possible. Get set for social and educational activities and a world full of fun with your classmates. Use this booklet as a day-by-day guide to First Week In your First-Year Seminar class, you will receive information about classes that you must attend during the week: computer orientation and distribution, GB112 (Tools and Concepts in Accounting and Finance) and a program on building community. There are also a number of interesting and informative sessions that you should attend throughout the week. Mandatory sessions for all students are designated by a star (). Should you have questions during First Week 2015, there are plenty of people around campus to answer them. First-Year Seminar student facilitators, resident assistants and international peer advisers can be valuable resources. In this presentation, Dear World will begin to tell the story of the class of 2019 by asking you to think of your own personal stories of hope, struggle, and happiness. 9:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. FIRST-YEAR HALL HOP By now, you ve had plenty of time to settle in and are ready to explore where your classmates from the Class of 2019 live. Gather your new friends and hop around campus to experience all the fun! From food straight off Moody Street to inflatables and more, this event is your chance to get to know your new home away from home. Sometimes those stories translate 4 5

As you prepare to begin your Bentley career, how will you apply these stories to the next chapter of your life? Complete with a welcome for Bentley s varsity teams, food fit for a training king or queen, a special guest emcee, photos with Flex, and your very own chance to be a star in a game of knockout OR one of two chances at $10,000! On the self-guided tour, you ll discover that the library is much more than just books. Collect six or more stamps on your library passport and be entered to win many fabulous prizes. You can earn prizes by playing with some of the coolest technology on campus and learning about the tutoring services and activities offered. Try Google Glass and other wearable devices, check out augmented reality, and get an advanced look at some projects you may be working on in IT 101 this year. The building will be open normal summer hours, which are 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and includes the Fieldhouse where you can play some pick-up basketball, the Fitness Center where you can get a workout in, as well as the Pool where you can work on your backstroke. There is plenty of space for you in the Men s/women s General Locker room(s), but make sure to bring a lock to secure your belongings while you work out, and then take your lock with you when you leave. 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. STUDENT CENTER OPEN HOUSE The Bentley Bubble, Living Room, Sacred Space, Harry s Pub and BackBay rooms are all popular destinations on campus and in the Student Center. Join our student employees for a comprehensive tour of these spaces, in addition to learning about the programs, services and engagement opportunities happening throughout the building. HOW TO DOUBLE MAJOR AT BENTLEY Juliet Gainsborough, Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences Adamian Academic Center, Room 362 You haven t declared a major yet, but it s not too early to think about how to add a second one! In this session, we will discuss the two ways to add a second major at Bentley the Liberal Studies major and the Business Studies major. Learn about how these second majors work, how they help you make the most of your courses at Bentley, and what employers have to say about these major combinations. CONNECT WITH THE CENTER FOR WOMEN AND BUSINESS Patricia Foster, Center for Women and Business Jennison Hall, Room 310 Bentley s Center for Women and Business works to create gender balance in the workplace. Come to this session to hear how the center helps young women unlock their full potential to succeed in the business world. Learn about key issues facing women entering today s working world and what you should be thinking about while you prepare at Bentley. You can also find out about the Women s Leadership Program, student workshops and work opportunities in the center. CAREER DEVELOPMENT INTRODUCTION SEMINAR (CDI 101) Colleen Murphy, Career Services Jennison Hall, Room 401 This innovative, six-week program is offered to all first-year students in conjunction with the First-Year Seminar. Topics covered include strengths/skills, résumé writing, cover letter writing, elevator pitch/ LinkedIn (your personal brand), informational career research and internship resources. THE CENTER FOR LANGUAGE AND INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION (CLIC) LAB Yuan Li, Director, CLIC Lab Adamian Academic Center, Room 162 Come to explore Rosetta Stone and find out more, so much more (access to international satellite broadcasting, Jukebox, peer tutoring and more) at the CLIC lab. UNDERSTANDING PROCRASTINATION Peter Forkner, Ph.D., Counseling Center. Jennison Hall, Room 409 Procrastination can be one of the most frustrating barriers to academic success. On the surface, it should be so easy to control. However, in today s age of social media, smartphones and Netflix, it has never been more difficult to focus on tasks you d rather not be doing. In this session you will learn about what procrastination is (and is not) and proven strategies for dealing with it. THE PROFESSIONAL SALES MAJOR AT BENTLEY James Pouliopoulos, Marketing Department Jennison Hall, Room 308 Bentley University recently launched a new Professional Sales major and you are invited to come learn if this major is a good fit for you. Professional sales is one of the most exciting and dynamic career paths today. The world s top firms and some of the most exciting start-up companies are constantly looking for qualified sales professionals, and Bentley s Professional Sales program will position you as a top candidate for this type of career. SPRING BREAK IN GHANA NOTE: START TIME IS 12:30 p.m. James Pouliopoulos, Marketing Department Jennison Hall, Room 307 Want to go to Africa? During the Spring 2016 semester, students will travel to Ghana for an intensive short-term program where they will conduct market research and analyze the business environment across diverse socio-economic strata in rural and urban regions of Ghana. Come learn about this unique program, which is open to all students, including first-years. The Bentley Service-Learning Center (BSLC) offers opportunities for student leaders to create and run programs that make a difference in the greater Waltham community. Whether you re interested in tutoring and mentoring young people, assisting in a homeless shelter, or applying IT skills to help in a nursing home, the BSLC will connect you with positive, like-minded Bentley students and community partners. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A BENTLEY HONORS PROGRAM STUDENT? Aaron Jackson, Honors Department Adamian Academic Center, Room 262 Hear students share their firsthand experiences about the benefits and challenges of the Bentley Honors Program. Designed for incoming Honors Program students, this session will offer practical tips for navigating the program, balancing its demands with opportunities at the university, and making it all work to your advantage.
