1 LIBRARY NEWS A PUBLICATION OF NORFOLK PUBLIC LIBRARY Volume 5, Issue 12 December 2015 What s New? Expansion/Renovation Design plans for the renovation and expansion of the library are underway. The floor plan and site plan have been provided by Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture. Construction will begin either fall 2016 or spring Credit/Debit Cards Patrons may now pay overdue fines at the library with a credit or debit card. Online payments can also be made using the My Account feature of our new catalog. Contact the library if you don t know your PIN Computer Classes The library plans to offer our computer classes from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Basic Computer classes (I, II & III) will be held during January, February and March. These classes are sequential; therefore, we encourage sign-up for all three. April through June will be Microsoft Publisher. These three classes offer the same information, so please sign up for one only. Basic Computer (I, II & III) will be repeated July through September. Beginning Internet I classes will be October to December. All classes require advanced registration and a good working knowledge of the computer. 3 Upcoming Programs Beginning Word Computer Class TUESDAY DECEMBER 15 1:00-4:00 p.m. This free beginning Word class will be taught at the library by a Northeast Community College instructor. Participants will use Windows 7 and should have a good working knowledge of the computer. Class size is limited, and reservations are required. Contact Judy, Amy or Lisa at or stop by the library s Information desk to register. 1,000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN GRADUATION PARTY Saturday December 5 10:00 a.m. Over 50 preschoolers have completed this program. New forms will soon be available, which will make it easier than ever to keep track of books. Reading 1,000 books to your child before kindergarten is a fun and rewarding way to instill an early love of reading! 3 A Little House Christmas DECEMBER 12 10:00 a.m. For children ages Space is limited, and advanced registration is required! Make butter; drink hot spiced cider; eat Johnnycakes and Laura s gingerbread; make button whirligigs, yarn dolls, comb harmonicas and Christmas ornaments; play Cat s Cradle and Little House trivia games; and enjoy Pa s fiddle music. To register or volunteer to help, contact Karen Drevo at Registration deadline is Monday, December 7. LITERARY CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATING CONTEST Decorate a artificial tree to celebrate your favorite book(s), book character(s) or author. (No real or lighted trees, please!) Submit with entry form, found at the library or on our website, by December 3. Winners of the Target gift cards will be announced on December 21. Trees must be picked up between January 2-5. 5 Youth Programs LAPSIT: Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. For infants through age 2 with a caregiver, this program is a fun way to begin library visits and literary experiences. Come learn new rhymes, songs and baby games while listening to stories and meeting other families with young children. (Note: There will be no Lapsit on December 5, 12, 26 or 30.) STORYTIME: Thursdays at 1:30 p.m., Fridays at 10:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. For children age 3 through grade 2, this is a fun combination of literature including books, songs, Spanish language experiences, storytelling, finger plays, poems, puppets and MORE! Caregivers are encouraged to attend with children. (Note: There will be no Storytime on December 5, 12, 24, 25, 26 or 31.) GOLDEN SOWER BOOK CLUB: Monday, December 28, at 4:00 p.m. This is a special book club just for kids ages 8-12 whose reading selections come from titles nominated for the Golden Sower Award, Nebraska s Children s Choice Literary Award. This month s book is A Girl from Felony Bay by J.E. Thompson. YOUNG ADULT BOOK GROUP (Y.A.B.G.): Saturday, December 5, at 2:30 p.m. This book club is designed for teens. This month s book is Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. For more information on any of these programs, call Karen or Marci at or stop by the Youth Services desk. 5

An informal time to work on projects, share skills, talk about books and meet others with similar interests. LIVE TRIVIA NIGHT AT THE VERANDA: Tuesday, December 8, at 7:00 p.m. The trivia is led by Librarian Quizmasters and takes place at the Veranda at Divots. Teams of 1-4 players are invited to test their knowledge against other teams for a chance to win a $40 gift card to Divots. Live Trivia is free to play and lots of fun! TUESDAY NIGHT BOOK CLUB: This book club will not meet in December. The group will meet at 6:30 p.m. at Prenger s Restaurant on January 5 to select books for the year. WEDNESDAY MORNING BOOK CLUB: December 30 at 10:00 a.m. For Adults. This month s book is The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. 20s & 30s BOOK CLUB: December 17 at 6:30 p.m. This month s book is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. How do you choose? To help you decide before you purchase, you can find reviews and see ratings for thousands of items in Consumer Reports. Stop in and look up whatever you need to know in print, or if you prefer, look up the information through our online subscription. Just click on online services at our website. You will need to ask the library for the password to open Consumer Reports from home. We have many more great databases you can access online. Why not give them a try too? Isn t it great what libraries can offer? And it s all for free! 7
