4 Important Symbols Wrist Band: You need to wear your black/white wristband all week. Replacement cost for a new one is $10 and can be purchased at the Orientation Table in the lobby. Student ID: This symbol indicates that you must have a Carnegie Mellon student ID to participate in the event. Activities Board: The Activities Board coordinates a wide variety of events to entertain and enrich the life of the campus community. The events represent a variety of topics and genres, and all the commitees work together to present a broad range of events for the campus throughout the year. Pittsburgh Connections: Through a generous grant from the R.K. Mellon Foundation, CMU students are offered discounted opportunities to engage in a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities located off campus. Helping students develop and maintain a physically active lifestyle and connect to the Pittsburgh region, this program provides exciting recreational activities to students throughout the school year. Student Dormitory Council: SDC is the governing body of the students residing in university housing. It aims to improve the lives of residents at CMU by providing opportunities for residents to participate in events and activities. Green Leaf: The leaf indicates events and organizations that are committed to sustainability and environmental awareness. 4

5 Dining Information All meals have vegan and vegetarian options. If you have arranged for special meals related to a medical condition or food allergy, your meal will be labeled and identified as a Special Dining Order and will be available in Wiegand Gymnasium. If you require kosher, halal or other religious meals, please catering@andrew.cmu.edu. If you have any questions or need help, see your OC or RA or ask a member of the Catering staff in Wiegand Gymnasium. You may also contact Dining Services at or dining@andrew. cmu.edu. DineXtra is better than cash or credit when eating on campus and at our off-campus partners. Receive a bonus value of up to 10% of the amount added: 1% for $100, 2% for $200, and so on, up to 10% for $1,000. DineXtra rolls over between semesters and expires at the end of the academic year. 17 Monday, August 21 House Day Orientation Programs 8 a.m. 3 p.m. Meet housemates and get to know your house staff. Become familiar with campus and your housing community through programs and activities led by your housefellow. Your orientation counselor and resident assistant will provide details at your first floor meeting. During the afternoon, you will have time to view the Solar Eclipse with members of the Astronomy Club. The sun will celebrate the first days of the Class of with a rare solar eclipse! The sky will begin to darken at 1:10 p.m. and by 2:35 p.m., 80 percent of the sun will be covered. If you re able to step away from orientation activities, you can view the eclipse through a telescope with the CMU Astronomy Club in the early afternoon. Or you can view the eclipse from anywhere by looking at the ground under a tree the openings between leaves act as pinhole cameras that project images of the eclipse on the ground. Do not look directly at the sun unless wearing glasses that are made for this purpose. (If the sky is cloudy, the eclipse won t be visible.) 23 First-Year Students Wanted: Undergraduate Research for Every Discipline 2 2:45 p.m. McConomy Auditorium, Every student is encouraged no matter what your ultimate career path to participate in research and creative inquiry at CMU, and you can begin as early as your freshman year. Come learn about the resources and opportunities available from the Undergraduate Research Office (URO): Small Undergraduate Research Grants (SURG) or Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF). Also learn about the Fellowships and Scholarships Office (FSO) from Stephanie Wallach, director; Joanna Dickert and Richelle Bernazzoli, assistant directors, Office of Undergraduate Research and National Fellowships. 24 TUESDAY TUESDAY IDeATe Information Session and Tour of IDeATe Maker Facilities in Hunt Library 2 3 p.m. Hunt Library, Studio A, 106B The IDeATe (Integrative Design, Arts and Technology) network provides interdisciplinary collaboration in which students experience learning and working in a diverse team of experts. IDeATe offers minors and courses in eight areas: Game Design, Animation & Special Effects, Media Design, Learning Media, Sound Design, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Intelligent Environments and Physical Computing, all of which are open to students from any major. IDeATe Assistant Director Kelly Delaney (kellydel@andrew.cmu.edu) will give an overview of the network, answer questions and give a tour of the IDeATe@Hunt maker facilities. Integrated Master s Programs at the INI for SCS, ECE and IS Majors 2 3 p.m. McKenna Peter Wright Room, Learn how to maximize your time at CMU and earn your B.S. and M.S. in five years. We will discuss the pathway to completing the MS in Information Networking or Information Security in 12 months. We will provide you with a list of the undergraduate courses you can take that will allow you to waive graduate requirements. 25 Explore the World! How Study Abroad Can Work for You 2:30 3:30 p.m. Connan Room, Over 500 Carnegie Mellon students, from all majors, study abroad annually. Students may study abroad for a semester, academic year or summer in countries around the world, including Carnegie Mellon s campus in Doha, Qatar.
