2 Meetings... October "Electro-optic Materials after Electro-optics" Date: Tuesday, 14 October 2003 Place: E 156 Student Union Wright State University Agenda: Talk: 7:00 PM Social: 6:30 PM Speaker: Prof. Robert J. Tweig Dept. of Chemistry, Kent State University Abstract: The development of organic and polymeric electro-optic modulators was a popular research topic in the general area of nonlinear optical materials prior to the burst of the telecommunications bubble a few years ago. Fortunately, and as is the case of much of science, knowledge is portable to new research areas. The application of the so-called "DCDHF chromophores" that were originally developed for electrooptics to new areas such as photorefraction, terahertz radiation generation, creation of optical solitons and single-molecule fluorescence will be discussed. The development of new synthetic methodology involving copper mediated amination of aryl halides that is useful for the synthesis of these chromophores will also be presented. Biography: Dr. Robert J. Tweig holds a title of Distinguish professor of chemistry at Kent State University. He received his Ph.D. (1975) degree in chemistry from University of California Berkley. He joined IBM Research at San Jose, CA. in 1978 as a Research Scientist. He was appointed Associate Proffessor at Kent State University in 1997 and Proffessor in He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Optical Materials. He also served as a Topical Editor for Journal of the Optical Society of America B from 1992 to 1997.

3 October National Chemistry Week Oct This year national chemistry week will be celebrated with "earth s atmosphere and beyond" as the theme to honor pioneers in aviation and atmospheric chemistry. Prof. John Fortman will perform demo on "The Chemistry of Flight". This three part lecture/ demo includes: Phenomena of Flight, Fuels & Combustion, and Materials. Please join us on Oct. 18 and 25. Schedule for "The Chemistry of Flight" Demo Shows Saturday, Oct. 18, National Aviation Hall of Fame Wing of the Air Force Museum, 11:30 & 1:30 (1 hour presentations). No admission fee. Saturday, Oct. 25 & Sunday, Oct. 26, Boonshoft Discovery Museum, 1:30, 2:30, &3:30 ( half hour presentations) Note: admission fee to the museum. From the Chair Greetings! We had so far some interesting activities this year. The presentation in April given by Dr. Elsa Reichmanis, ACS President, was very well attended. Thanks to Prof. John Fortman s Chemistry of Flight Demonstrations, the High School Award function was a big success. As usual, Mr. Berch Carpenter and his team worked hard to get the Award announcements out on time. The Patterson-Crane award function was conducted by the Columbus Section at the Chemical Abstracts Service premises. The Award was presented to Dr. Robert J Massie, Director of Chemical Abstracts Service, and recognized Mr. Massie for his leadership in encouraging the creation of the revolutionary SciFinder and SciFinder Scholar services. The elections for the Board of Directors for 2004 will be held in Oct. 03. We have to fill up the positions of Chair-Elect and Secretary. The ballots for the election are enclosed in the bulletin. Please mark your choice and send in the ballots. We also have the Professional practices Committee Chair and Membership Committee Chair positions vacant. We need more volunteers. The Dayton Section would like to welcome the new Public Relations Chair Capt. Cathy Fullerton. I am happy to inform our members that our section was nominated for the Chemluminary Award given by the American Chemical Society for the activities of We qualified under the Medium Section Category along with Nashville and Indiana. The award was given to the Nashville Section. The National Chemistry Week Program is forth coming in October. Prof. John Fortman will present Chemistry of Flight Demonstrations. Please bring your family to the "Chemistry of Flight" demonstrations. The details are given in this Bulletin. The professional practices meeting and dinner will be held in Dec. 03. Details will appear in the next bulletin. I wish our members all the best in the rest of the year. Nat Natarajan

5 Our chair, Nat Natarajan, at the 2003 ACS Chemluminary in New York Patterson Highschool Chemistry Awards The 2003 Patterson High School Chemistry Competition was held on February 1st at Sinclair Community College. The competition is open to students in Montgomery, Miami, Greene, Darke, Clark, Preble, and Champaign Counties. Ninety-two students from nineteen different high schools participated in this year s competition. The most outstanding student from each school, identifed by their scores on a multiple choice chemistry exam, received a plaque from the Dayton Section. In addition, each top scorer from the exam submitted an essay on Chemistry and Its Relevance to Me for cash awards: $1000 (First Place), $500 (Second Place), and $250 (Third Place). Berch Carpenter with the Patterson High School Award Winner, Lindsey Stahl of Bellbrook High The 2003 Patterson Chemistry Award winners are: Jack Zhou - 1st Place Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (Tippecanoe High School); Lindsey Stahl - 2nd Place Combating HIV with Chemistry (Bellbrook High School); Bodley Xu - 3 rd Place The Fischer Tropsch Process for the Manufacturing of Gasoline

6 2004 E 2004 ELECTION FOR THE DAYTON S ECTION OFFICERS UES, Inc. AFRL/MLPJ, Wright-Patterson AFB Meet the Candidates Chair Elect Joy Rogers Ph.D in Chemistry, 2001, University of Maryland Baltimore County Current Secretary of the Dayton Section ACS Statement If I were elected chair of the Dayton Local ACS Section I would campaign to involve more members and non-members with their local section. I would actively reach out with programs and events that are important to our local area. This includes the events we currently promote such as the High School Awards, Chemistry Olympiad, College Awards and Poster Session, National Chemistry Week, and Techfest. In addition to this we need events to target the younger generation of chemists who are entering the local job market. I propose a local job fair organized by our local section and possibly in conjunction with the Cincinnati or Columbus sections. It is also important to reach out to the younger students by promoting scientific demonstrations. This excites the kids to want to be interested in chemistry. I propose that bimonthly during the school year volunteers from our section go to a different elementary or middle school to teach the children about chemistry. I have served as the Secretary of the Dayton Section for the past two years so I am relatively familiar with the events and programs that we support. There is a lot to do in the upcoming years to both promote chemistry and to honor members. Based on this I hope that you vote for me UDRI AFRL/MLBP, Wright-Patterson AFB Narayanan Venkat Ph.D in Chemistry, Indian Intitute of Technology, Madras, India. Statement I have been associated with AFRL/MLBP in the Materials Directorate as a Polymer Research Chemist affiliated to the University of Dayton Research Institute from 1993, developing/investigating high performance polymeric materials/composites for structural, opto-electronic and power generation applications of importance to the Air Force. I have been a member of the ACS (Polymer and PMSE divisions) as well as the ACS Dayton section for several years. I would like to get formally involved in the activities of this Division which has already gained some prominence at the National level. It would be a privilege to partake of and contribute the dynamics of this division and learn from the experience of the current and past office-bearers. I would strive to have an increased turnout of our members for meetings, especially the ones involving talks/ lectures by external speakers. Secretary Dr. Aaron Burke AFRL/MLPJ, Wright-Patterson AFB. Ms. Lisa Denny AFRL/MLPB, Wright-Patterson AFB.
