3 R ESULTS OF THE 2011 DAYTON SECTION ELECTIONS We received 21 ballots by the deadline. Several more arrived late but these would not have made a difference in this uncontested election. Ms. Lori Balster was elected Chair-Elect, and Dr. Wayne Cook was elected Secretary. Congratulations to all our newly elected officers! Prof. Suzanne Seleem succeeds to Chair and Vladimir Benin to Immediate Past Chair. Dr. Chris Tabor starts his second and final year in his term as Treasurer, while Steve Trohalaki and Rachel Jakubiak start their second years in their current terms as Councilor and Alternate Councilor, respectively. The Section owes a debt of thanks to our outgoing officers Dr. Hilmar Koerner and Mr. James Carey for their selfless service. The alter egos of the 2012 Dayton Section Board of Directors and our outgoing officers are pictured below. 4 P A S T M E E T I N G N A T I O N A L C H E M I S T R Y W E E K National Chemistry Week was celebrated at three separate events in The first event took place at the Centerville Library on October 15th and the second event held on November 5th and 6th at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. All events highlighted this year s theme of Chemistry Our Health, Our Future. At the Centerville Library experiments included a hand washing exercise, cold packs/hot packs, an aspirin test, sunscreen protection, and glucose testing. At the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery ten experiments were performed over the two-day period including those mentioned above as well as vitamin C testing, foaminess of bargain shampoos, nano-zinc oxide creams, bath bombs, and curdling milk. For the second year now an event also took place at the Dayton Regional STEM School on October 20th. Volunteers Wayne Cook and A future chemist tests for glucose. Joy Haley performed ph experiments on household chemicals, endothermic and exothermic reactions, and testing sunscreen to the7th and 8th grade classes of Ms. Brittnee Lydy. A combined total of about 500 local children performed experiments. We give a special thanks to all of our volunteers. At the Centerville Library, they include Wayne and Rhonda Cook, Ben Tway, Dominque Judkins, Katie Sullivan, and Joy Haley. Dayton Section members volunteering at the Boonshoft Museum include Ed Geller, Melinda Greer, Ben Tway, Chris Kanalas, Daqing Gao, Vladimir Benin, Radka Benin, Dorothy Ogden, Lisa Draughn, and Joy Haley. We are thankful for all the volunteers from the University of Dayton Chemistry Club and the Wright State University Chemistry Club. We thank Wright State in particular for performing demonstrations throughout the weekend! The winner of the Dayton Poster Contest highlighting this year s NCW theme is Ms. Kathryn Holland from Urbana High School. She is an 11th grader in the class of Kathryn Zaborowski. Her winning submission was sent to ACS as a contender in the national contest. The Dayton Section awarded her a $25 gift card. Congratulations! Volunteer Ben Tway, showing how coated aspirin dissolves in the intestines in order to prevent stomach upset, plans further testing the morning after his next kegger. The students were disturbed by the fleakers, which are neither flask nor beaker. Volunteer Katie Sullivan shows how diabetic testing strips are used to determine glucose levels in urine? URINE? OMG!! I am totally freaking out!! OK, calm down, Katie; it s just yellow pedialyte. Good luck in med school! 4
5 P AST MEETING PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES On Thursday, November 17, 2011, section members numbering a score and a half gathered at the Wellington Grille to honor the newest 50-year members Dr. Robert A. Darrow, Prof. John J. Fortman, Mr. Paul H. Lamberger, Prof. Munson Paul Serve, and Mr. John M. Zurbuchen as well as our new 60-year members Ms. Mary T. Ryan and Mr. James A. Webster. Unfortunately, Dr. Darrow and Ms. Ryan were unable to attend. Narayanan Venkat, longtime Chair of the Professional Practices Committee, presented each honoree with an ACS certificate and a plaque of recognition. After the awards, the honorees informally addressed the audience. Prof. John Fortman performed some of his best known chemistry demos, and was also able to quell several complaints from attendees that their steaks were too rare. The Dayton Section offers its sincere congratulations to all of our 50 year and 60-year members! Fifty-year member Prof. John Fortman waits patiently through Venkat s lengthy introduction. Fifty-year member Paul Lamberger reacts to hecklers. Apparently, our newly-elected officers can t hold their liquor. Venkat pose exudes equal measures respect, interest, and admiration, but he s actually taking a 90-second power nap as Prof. Paul Serve accepts his 50-Year Member Award. Sixty-year member James Webster finds tucked behind his award Venkat s bar bill but he s not about to be fooled by that old trick. Besides, he d never order a Lassi, let alone five. Fortunately, the Board remembered to turn off the sprinklers in our room; other Wellington Grill patrons got a tad wet. Fifty-year member John Zurbuchen reacts to a comment by Venkat, who later explained, I didn t realize that I d said that out loud. 5 American Chemical Society? Why, all these years I thought I was a member of the American Ceramic Society!
