Chapter Activities Seminars: Our chapter took advantage of the thriving optics/photonics research environment at Purdue University and organized a number of seminars and luncheons with visiting professors that were invited and sponsored by Purdue professors. We invited the optics/photonics research community at Purdue to attend all the seminars and luncheons. These seminars proved to be very effective promoting collaborations between Purdue University and other universities. Following are a list of the seminars we hosted in 2015: 1. Nanoplasmonics and spaser by Mark Stockman - co-inventor of nanoscale laser. December 16th, $30.83 was spent on refreshments. 2. Non-traditional interferometers for quantum metrology by Prof Jeff Ou from IUPUI, February 27, $34.14 was spent on refreshments.
3. Industrial Seminar: Industrial tech talk by Dr. Pavel Dorozhkin - head of product development and application department from NT-MDT (an AFM-Raman-TERS-SNOM instrumentation company). February 28th, $19.44 was spent on beverages. 4. Pushing the Limits of Terahertz Optoelectronics by Prof. Mona Jarrahi, world expert in terahertz technologies. March 23rd, $64.20 was spent on refreshments.
5. Self-assembled quantum dots and localized excitons in 2D materials by Prof. Brian Gerardot from Heriot-Watt University, worldwide expert in the field of quantum emitters. July 2nd, Strong atom-light interactions in 1D photonic crystals by Jonathan Hood, PhD Student in Prof. Jeff Kimble's Group, Caltech, CA. October 22nd, $30 was spent on refreshments.
Callouts: At the spring and fall callouts we presented our chapter activities to Purdue student community, aiming at recruiting new members. We also invited professors from Purdue ECE department to give an inspirational talk on the topic of optics/photonics. Spring: February 5th, $ was spent on refreshments. Fall: October 6th, $90.44 was spent on refreshments.

Outreach: Nanodays 2015, optics outreach kit provided by SPIE was used to demonstrate optical phenomena. Our chapter paid a visit to University of Michigan SPIE/OSA Student Chapters, on April 17th, The members presented their research, interacted with members of U Michigan Chapters, and visited some labs at Univ. of Michigan. Travel and accommodation expenses were covered by CPHOM (center for photonic and multiscale nanomaterials, University of Michigan) grant funding.
Mikhail Shalaginov attended SPIE Student Chapter Leadership Workshop in San Diego, in August, Social Activities: We hosted two social events in order to provide a relaxing environment for our members to mingle and interact with each other. Spring picnic co-hosted with Purdue NSAC (Nanotechnology Student Advisory Council) and OSA Purdue Student Chapter, April 24th, $100 was spent on food.
Lake Shafer boat trip, August 1st $ was spent on boat rentals and $46.00 on dinner, $6.98 was spent on gas. Total expense $ All the activities except for callouts were described in previous year s funding request.
Planned Future Activities Lectures and Seminars Purdue is a home to some of the world s leading experts in science, technology, and engineering, many of whom are actively engaged in the field of Optics. This provides our student chapter with the unique opportunity to host many of these outstanding scientists and learn about the broad range of optics related research conducted at our university. In the upcoming year, we plan to invite several scientists and industrial professionals working on the cutting-edge field of Optics and Photonics to present the latest research and products. According to our plan, 5 technical lectures/seminars are to be organized during the year of The main expense will be food and beverages for the audience. The event is planned to be organized together with OSA Purdue University Student Chapter. We also plan to host COMSOL and Meep workshops in the spring semester of 2016, as many SPIE members utilize these simulation tools for research purposes. Social Events Such activities are planned to bring together members of our SPIE chapter in a social environment, such as playing bowling, board games, ice-skating, etc. The event is expected to promote more interaction among the SPIE student members. Events will also include spring picnics and fun activities such as laser tag/paintball tournaments Outreach NanoDays is a traditional nano-science showcase. K-12 students with teachers and parents are invited to visit three major research centers in Purdue University s Discovery Park. We plan to have Optics & Photonics booth at NanoDays and show interesting optical demonstrations. The booth is planned to be organized together with OSA Purdue University Student Chapter. We also plan to have two callout events in spring and fall semesters of 2016, respectively, to arouse interest in optics/photonics research among Purdue students and potentially recruit new members. Academic Trips We plan to visit one of the SPIE chapters from nearby universities, e.g., Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, University of Notre Dame, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Northwestern University, Illinois Wesleyan University. This activity will help to establish professional and social connections between the SPIE members from different universities. Specifically, our agenda will be to visit their research facilities and exchange the newest research results by presentations or posters. We will also share our experiences on chapter development and promotion. Symposium We meet to brainstorm and discuss current, global challenges in efforts to better the world through science, employing use of optics and photonics. The ultimate goal is to generate ideas that could potentially have a positive, technological and innovative impact on today s society.
Poster Competition We will invite all the student members of optics/photonics research community at Purdue to present their works in the form of posters, and invite professors or postdocs to be evaluate the quality of each presentation. Top three presenters will be awarded with prizes. This competition aims at raising the awareness of refining presentation skills among research students.
