1 PASSPORT EUROPE FESTIVAL Saturday, September 23, and Sunday, September 24, 2017 The Morton Arboretum welcomes you to explore the diverse cultures of Europe with us. While you re here, visit our beautiful and historic tree collections from Northern and Central Europe. The Morton Arboretum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that relies on the generosity of members and donors. Your visits and contributions support our work as the champion of trees.
2 OUR EUROPEAN CONNECTIONS Joy Morton, founder of The Morton Arboretum, drew inspiration from botanical gardens in Europe when he traveled there in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Established in 1922, The Morton Arboretum has partnered with European botanical gardens and conservation organizations for many decades, resulting in a rich collection of trees from Central and Northern Europe, where the climate is similar enough to ours that the trees can thrive in the Midwest. Stop by the Central and Northern European Collections to see trees carefully collected from across Europe. Be on the lookout for Tilia dasystyla, Crimean linden, a subspecies of linden tree which is more resistant to Japanese beetles than Tilia Cordata, little-leaved linden. You ll also find Quercus robur, English oak, which is native to Europe as far east as the Caucasus. In addition to collecting and conserving European trees, The Morton Arboretum works with European partners to have a global impact. As a patron member organization of Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), headquartered in London, the Arboretum collaborates with botanic gardens and arboreta from around the world to further global plant conservation. Gerard Donnelly, PhD, president and CEO of the Arboretum, is a member of the BGCI board of directors and chairs its International Advisory Council. Murphy Westwood, PhD, director of global tree conservation, is an associate conservation officer with BGCI and works on the Global Trees Campaign Project. ArbNet, an interactive community of arboreta founded by The Morton Arboretum in 2011, fosters collaboration and best practices to advance the planting and conservation of trees. ArbNet is expanding its international network of arboreta in European countries like the Czech Republic, France, and the United Kingdom. By building global partnerships, The Morton Arboretum champions trees around the world. Join us as we celebrate the trees and cultures of Europe at today s festival and every day through our collections, conservation, and research.
