3 Artist-Led Workshop by Foldhaus Artist Collective, creators of Blumen Lumen Canal Convergence 2018: Request for Creative Programming Proposals Deadline for submissions is Monday, June 15, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. (Mountain Daylight Time). This call is specifically about creative programming and ideas for Canal Convergence. A previous call for art has already closed for those interested in proposing public art installations. Scottsdale Public Art seeks proposals for creative programming ideas in conjunction with Scottsdale s Canal Convergence Water + Art + Light Canal Convergence will be on view for 10 days, from November 9 18, 2018, at the Scottsdale Waterfront along the Arizona Canal. interventions, interactive arts, media and educational workshops, and live mural painting or other arts demonstrations. Tell us your ideas for engaging the public at our free community arts event.

4 Spectrum by Rachel Bowditch Scottsdale Public Art is seeking proposals for creative and interactive programming including, but not limited to, dance and musical performances, health and wellness activities, social practice interventions, interactive arts, media and educational workshops, and live mural painting or other arts demonstrations. Tell us your ideas for engaging the public at our free community arts event. All local, regional and international artists and presenters including architects, designers, dancers, musicians, poets, educators and multimedia specialists are invited to submit proposals for programming that take into consideration the following: ART + WATER + LIGHT: How does your programming address Canal Convergence s key themes? Interactivity: Hands-on experiences are highly desired. Tell us how you will engage with the community at Canal Convergence. Sustainability and Water Conservation: Does the programming approach water conservation, sustaining life in the desert, the importance of our natural resources, environmental awareness or climate change? The use of solar power, biodegradable, and recycled/recyclable materials is also encouraged. Artist participation is integral to Canal Convergence! A.D Today s canals are still desert lifelines for human inhabitation managed by Salt River Project (SRP). Canal Convergence Water + Art + Light Events Since 2012, Scottsdale Public Art has partnered with the City of Scottsdale and SRP to present Canal Convergence annually at the Scottsdale Waterfront. Canal Convergence s free and immersive events feature innovative large-scale installations, hands-on activities and workshops, and live music and other performances that provide a truly unique experience. The focus of Canal Convergence is on the canal architectural form, its function as a power and water utility corridor and its history as a lifeline for humans in the Sonoran Desert. Details Artists and artist teams are being asked to submit a proposal for new concepts or existing programming structures to be featured during Canal Convergence Water + Art + Light 2018.

6 Details Artists and artist teams are being asked to submit a proposal for new concepts or existing programming structures to be featured during Canal Convergence Water + Art + Light We are looking for family-friendly programming ideas, big and small, to activate a variety of sites at the Scottsdale Waterfront, including the canal paths, grass areas, bridges, stages and plazas. We seek proposals for interactive workshops, demonstrations, performances, choreography, social practice interventions and other special and interactive events. Eligibility All local, regional and international artists and artist teams are invited to submit a proposal for Canal Convergence Programming. Budget We recommend budgets between $500 $10,000 USD, with a limited number of larger budgets being awarded to programs requiring advanced technology, specialized equipment or travel. Artists wishing to provide proposals for larger budgets are required to demonstrate experience in successfully producing programming to the proposed scale. Applicants are encouraged to apply for a budget appropriate to their project and to account for all expenses in a detailed budget estimate. Selection Process A selection committee including Scottsdale Public Art staff, Scottsdale Public Art board members and community stakeholders will select programming artists for the November 2018 Canal Convergence exhibition. Selection will be based on adherence to the listed themes and requirements, as well as suitability for the site and event. Safety On-site presence must be durable and able to withstand unpredictable weather conditions for the duration of the installation. Artists are asked to consider in their proposal the Arizona environment, which can potentially include extreme heat, cold, wind and rain. Site activation requiring stable infrastructure for support will need to be reviewed and approved by a structural engineer. Artists are responsible for addressing safety concerns, including securing all electrical and support cabling with durable covers to eliminate any tripping hazards. Assistance Descending Fables by Nicole L. Olson Scottsdale Public Art can provide on-site assistance to programming artists, pending a discussion of needs following the selection process. Within your proposal, please consider how the program will be installed and operated, including labor, equipment needs and an installation timeline. 5

Please note that each artist or team may submit up to two ideas or artworks. Please include a separate submission with documentation for each idea/artwork being proposed. 1. Completed Canal Convergence Application Packet (saved as a PDF with the artist or artist team in the file name): a. Proposal or narrative (one page): Describe proposed activity, including interactive elements, adherence to theme, target audience, site requirement, equipment needs, etc. Scottsdale Public Art can provide tents, tables, chairs and power. b. Résumé of artist or artist team (three pages or fewer) c. Detailed project budget (one page): Include clear line items breaking down costs for: artist fee, materials, artwork fabrication costs, shipping, insurance, travel/accommodations. 2. JPEG image files (100 dpi at minimum 5.5 by 7 ) and corresponding image list: a. Project images or renders (up to five images): i. Include images of existing program being proposed for temporary installation ii. OR Detailed sketches, renderings, plan drawings, photos of models, video narratives or presentations of new ideas, including actual dimensions and plans for placement or site activation. b. Image list for all submitted JPEGs i. Include artist or presenter s name, title of work/program and any other information to clarify the intended visual appearance and programmatic elements associated with the proposal. d. Detailed project timeline (one page): Include proposal development, material acquisition, fabrication, installation, travel/ etc. Please also include a timeline for your proposed program. e. Contact information for three professional references: Include name, address and phone number. 6

8 Questions/Follow Up If you have questions about your idea and its suitability with our site, we are happy to discuss your proposal. Remember the suggested themes: water, art, light and human interaction; sustainable sources ARIZONA! Project Launch and Demonstration by Choi + Shine Architects of water for the desert environment; laws of nature; and the intersection of contemporary art and human connection to the natural Sonoran Desert environment. Addressing or incorporating elements of sustainability as well as the consideration of solar power is encouraged. Activities will be planned for both daytime and nighttime.
