Our program on Using Timelines presented by Nancy Matthews. EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING: The Executive Board Meeting for September was held on September 12, Beginner s Class Calendars 3. Seminars Christmas Party 5. The next Executive Board meeting will be October 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. SEPTEMBER MEETING: Our September Meeting will be September 20, 2015 at 2:00 in the Round Room of the Jonesboro Library. Our program will be: Roundtable Discussion - How did you solve a Tough Problem? 2015 Christmas Party Even though it feels nothing like Christmas when you step out the door, mark your calendar for December 5, 2015 at Fat City Steak and Grillhouse. We will be there from 11:30 until 1:30. Additional information will be in upcoming newsletters. BEGINNER S CLASS: The next Beginning Genealogy Class is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2015 at the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library from 10:00 to 3:00. There will be a two-hour session with a break for lunch followed by a second twohour session. Please contact Nancy Matthews nlmatthews@suddenlink.net Calendars It is time to think about our calendar for This time we are interested in FASHION. We are looking for everything from Grandma feeding the chickens in her sunbonnet and apron to Fancy Dress. We are looking for the 1850s to the 1950s. We also would like to know something about each picture. If you have photos you would like to contribute, you can a scanned image to nlmatthews@suddenlink.net or gscca@suddenlink.net. You can also bring the photo to the regular meeting and it will be scanned. We already have several pictures for our 2016 Calendar but more are needed. 1

3 As many of you know the Society has presented sessions from Family Tree University s Winter 2015 Virtual Conference as some of our programs. There are still a number of sessions that we have not seen. Instead of presenting the remaining sessions as programs, we will be giving DVD s of the full Conference to members. These DVD s will be available at the meeting on Sunday, September 20. NOMINATING COMMITTEE: It is once again time to select a slate of nominations for officers to be presented to the Society. Some of the current officers are not able to remain in their positions. 4 3 Strategies to Find Military Records on FamilySearch.org This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Military records such as service records, pensions, and draft registration cards (see above) can provide valuable information about your ancestors and their military service. But what's the key to finding military records on FamilySearch.org? Guest writer and author of the Unofficial Guide to FamilySearch.org Dana McCullough shares three search strategies for searching FamilySearch.org's military records collections. Learn military history. The United States has been involved in many military incursions throughout the years. By learning about them and when they took place, you can identify which conflict your ancestor may have served in. See the table below for a list of major US military conflicts. Note that your ancestors may have draft records available even if they weren t deployed. Include residence in search criteria. Including where your ancestor lived will help you determine whether the John Smith listed is your John Smith. In addition, many military records were recorded or arranged by state, and most military records include the soldier's place of residence. Add a family relationship. Particularly when searching for pensions records, try adding a family relationship. Why? Pensions included family members such as the soldier's widow or children. Other military records may also include family members' name, since soldiers often had to provide information about their next of kin or a contact person back home.
