Sent:Monday, April 25, :00 PM Good Monday afternoon to you on April 25, NOTE: Please remind our students that ASO Elections will be taking place in the North Tent all day on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was good being back on campus, at least on a part-time basis. I found that by mid-week the amazing energy of the campus and the people was moving in my veins. I am starting my radiation and chemo this week but still planning on being around, at least part-time. This Wednesday, April 27 th, is, once again, Denim Day. As you know, this event is designed to raise awareness about sexual assault. The roots of Denim Day go back to a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have somehow helped the rapist remove her jeans, implying consent. The following day the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. That was the day the Denim Day campaign was born. We encourage you to wear denim on Wednesday to raise awareness among all employees and students. There will be resource tables in the North tent. There is also a Title IX Sexual Assault and Awareness video presentation in Aspen Hall, Room TE 101, from 9am-2pm. All are invited.

3 3 of 11 4/26/ :24 AM Also on Wednesday, we will be holding our annual Child Development Center Trike-a-thon in the North Quad. Come out and watch the kids pedal around the quad. It s always a fun time. Then the departments will go head-to-head in a battle to see which of their teams is the fastest on three wheels. Last year, the Utilities Program dethroned Physical Plant, so let s see if there is a little payback in the air. There will be jumpers and some games, so come on by. The competitions will start around 10am. Next weekend the Collaborative for Urban Agroecology Los Angeles will be holding its annual summit on campus thanks to the work of our architecture technology program. They are expecting hundreds to attend and learn the latest in growing food in urban areas. There will be great speakers and presentations. You are invited. This past week we had a laser focus on outreach and enrollment growth for our summer and fall sessions. This past Tuesday, the Bridges to Success team along with representatives from about ten different Trade Tech programs, gathered at one of our key feeder and SLATE-Z schools, Fremont High School. The outreach effort was called Lunch with LATTC, and hundreds of students came out before, during and after lunch to learn the latest about what our campus has to offer and how to register. Many of the Fremont students were not aware of just how many programs we have.

4 4 of 11 4/26/ :24 AM Then on Friday, the Bridges team recruited fifty high school counselors and gatekeepers to participate in the newest version of LATTC Day at Trade Tech. The counselors experienced presentations about the onboarding process along with information about our pathways and services. They were given a tour of many of our programs and a sense of what makes us so special. Many of counselors had never been to our campus and those at my lunch table were amazed at the new look and work of our campus. Now they are armed with information and a first-hand experience. These high school counselors will be the best ambassadors for Trade Tech as we grow our dual enrollment and outreach efforts.

6 6 of 11 4/26/ :24 AM Also on Friday, Design & Media Arts pathway held a showcase featuring all of the programs available in the pathway. The idea was to get students interested in the various aspects of the pathway. The day included live silk-screening, sign graphics painting, and a sketching contest in the North Tent while a fashion show took place in the South Tent. There was some great energy surrounding all the programs and their unique place within our campus landscape. Congratulations to the pathway team and all of the students who participated.

8 8 of 11 4/26/ :24 AM Thanks to those who attended last Thursday s Day of Dialogue. As you know, the almost completed 24 th Street Parking Structure and the partially designed Culinary Arts-Multipurpose building are the last new buildings that will be funded under our existing bond program. We dove into an effort to determine our new construction needs if a new facilities bond moves forward for the November 2016 ballot. This conversation continues at our next Work Environment Committee meeting next Monday (5/2) afternoon. Please join in.

9 9 of 11 4/26/ :24 AM This past week our campus Sheriff s Office, which is led by Sergeant Diane Dodd, held a Town Hall meeting focused on our campus safety. The District-wide lead, Captain Cheryl Tarwater, went through completed survey responses which show that more than 80% of the students and staff at Trade Tech feel safe on campus. Adding to the discussion were Deans Dimitrios Synodinos and Saadia Porche who spoke about resources available to students and the importance of identifying the signs of people struggling with their mental health. The discussion was full of information about how to keep our campus as safe as possible. Thank you to our sheriff s team and everyone who took the time to participate for helping to protect our learning environment.

10 10 of 11 4/26/ :24 AM You may be one of the faculty or staff that have had the privilege of seeing our former Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness & Innovation, Marcy Drummond, around campus recently. I am happy to report that she is on campus as a key advisor to help us fulfill the goals of our recently awarded Federal Transit Administration grant. This grant has made LA Trade Tech the only community college in the United States to be awarded an FTA Transit Institute, in addition to seven other universities and non-profits in the country. Our entity is called the Transportation Workforce Institute (TWI), and is based out of the second floor of Oak Hall, and will allow us to become an increasingly important participant

11 11 of 11 4/26/ :24 AM in the new rail and transit jobs and training in both regionally and our nationally. Great work is happening and more will be reported on TWI at a later date. There are plenty of events coming up in the next few weeks, including our Tools for the Trades Rally on May 4 th, Annual Job Fair on May 5 th, the Social Innovation Summit on May 6 th, and so much more.
