This workshop offers an introduction into a variety of playful mediation methods, including active and silent mediation practices through personal instruction. Attendees will perform a variety of poses and breathing exercises specifically designed to relieve physical and mental stress. Friday, November 21 st from 4:30 p.m. 8 p.m. Saturday, November 22 nd & Sunday, November 23 rd, 8 a.m. 5 p.m. A 3-day course in which participants will be trained in lifeguarding, first aid, and adult, child and infant CPR / AED for the Professional Rescuer. Participants will receive a textbook and itinerary upon registering for class. Must be at least 15 years old to register. Topics discussed will include working with rows and columns, keeping track of finances, inventories and even gift lists! Discover how easy and fun spreadsheets can be! FLOOR STRETCH CLASS Begins Friday, November 21 st Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 9 a.m. at the Senior Center Joan Lennox provides instruction on how to safely prevent muscle cramping, increase range of motion and correct posture through stretching. Suitable for all fitness levels. Please register in advance as space is limited. Fold, arch, twist, bend, invert, and leap as your rhythmic breathing sets the speed at which you move from pose to pose. Tuesdays, from 4:15 p.m. 5:15 p.m. Thursdays, from 5:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. This class utilizes both free weights and the stability ball for a total body workout. Benefits include improved balance, flexibility and coordination. Stability ball, weights and mats are supplied; please bring your own towel. Must be at least 14 years old to register. Pre-registration at front desk is recommended as space is limited. Mornings: Monday, Wednesday & Friday, from 10:15 a.m. 11:15 a.m. Evenings: Monday & Wednesday, from 5:30 p.m. 6:30 p.m. A one-hour cardio-to-music class including stretching, warm-up and cool down. Members are encouraged to bring a towel. Exercises are low-intensity and long-duration that expend calories and burn fat. Fun Days operate from 8 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Daily activities include arts and crafts, athletics, group games and other counselor-led activities. Healthy snacks are provided; each child will need to bring his or her own lunch. Please register in advance for future dates. Registration continues this week Extended Care accommodates parents who are unable to pickup their children from the After-School program by 5:30 p.m. Offered as a 3-week pilot program, children now have the option of participating in supervised activities with a counselor until 6:15 p.m. with a 15-minute grace period lasting until 6:30 p.m. Registration is offered on a weekly basis. Please stop by the front desk for more information. Session II: November 17, 18, 19, 20 A new approach to swim lessons: group lessons based around the swimming abilities of your child. Class schedule and skill level information available at the front desk. * Lessons continue this week Available to children in grades K thru 8 Session II: November 17, 24 Session III: December 1, 8, 15, 22 A fun, safe and structured martial arts program that focuses on more than self-defense: improve your child s health and self-confidence! Classes are held Mondays from 2:45 p.m. 3:45 p.m. at the Recreation Center. Call Kurokawa Martial Arts at (239) for class information. AFTER-SCHOOL TEEN PROGRAM Included with membership Registration forms available at the front desk All 7 th and 8 th grade Recreation Center members are eligible to attend this program at no additional fee. The program operates every school day from 2:15 p.m. 5:30 p.m. Middle-school students must have a signed release form to utilize the weight room with a supervising counselor. Attending children also have the opportunity to participate in structured games and athletics, complete homework and socialize with peers. Page 5 of 10

6 AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM Members: $530 / year per child Non-members: $633 / year per child YOUTH CHEERLEADING Members: $50 / child Non-members: $63 / child Practice times will be announced by coach YOUTH BASKETBALL Members: $30 / child Non-members: $38 / child Practice times will be announced by coach YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL Register at the front desk space still available! Available to youth in grades K thru 8. Daily activities include indoor and outdoor sports, swimming, arts and crafts, and homework / snack time. The program operates on school days from 2:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Children registered in the After-School program receive a one year complimentary Recreation Center membership. This membership can be upgraded to a family membership for an additional $50. Practices for both teams are Thursday evenings A non-competitive cheerleading program available to enthusiastic and energetic children in grades K thru 5. Participants will cheer during Saturday Youth Basketball games at the Recreation Center. Participants are divided by age into two teams. The program runs from late November thru February 14 th. Volunteer coaching opportunities are available! Registration continues until Sunday, November 23 rd A fun way to stay fit this fall for children in grades K thru 8! Participants will learn basketball fundamentals and teamwork while making new friends. Players are divided by age and skill level. Games are held Saturdays at the Recreation Center. The program runs from late November thru February 14 th. Volunteer coaching opportunities are available! Games begin Thursday, December 4 th at the ball fields Youth Flag Football offers participants a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in non-contact, continuous action while learning lessons in teamwork. USWFA FITNESS INSTRUCTOR COURSE Members: $211 per person Non-members: $247 per person Includes class materials Monday, Wednesday & Friday from 9 a.m. 10 a.m. Tuesday & Thursday from 10:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. & Saturday, from 11 a.m. Noon This class is held in the exercise pool for attendees who desire a low-impact workout in warmer, shallow water. * Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 10:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, from 9 a.m. 10 a.m. Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. This class is held in the lap pool for participants who desire a low-impact workout in cooler, deeper water. * Thursday, from 9 a.m. 10 a.m. This specialized class will be held in the lap pool for those who desire a low-impact cardiovascular workout in deeper water while utilizing aqua jogging equipment such as belts and ankle resistance. * Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4 p.m. 5 p.m. Masters Swimming is a program for serious swimmers, ages 18 and over, designed to improve stroke technique and build endurance. * Monday, Wednesday, & Friday from 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. & Sunday: Noon 5 p.m. Instruction is tailored to the participant s needs: from basic swim instruction to improving stroke efficiency and endurance. Private swim lessons are scheduled on an individual basis by the Recreation Department s Aquatics Staff. * Saturday, December 6 th from 9:30 a.m. 4 p.m. at the Recreation Center Become a certified water fitness instructor in the United States Water Fitness Association s comprehensive course! Class graduates are certified for three years and also receive a three-year USWFA membership. Please register prior to November 15 th to allow time for studying and completing all required written work. Registration forms are available on the USWFA website, Please call the Recreation Center at (239) for additional details. *Aquatic programs require that the air temperature is greater than 65 degrees and the water temperature greater than 80 degrees. **For the health and safety of our guests, the pool is closed when the air temperature is less than 60 degrees. Wednesdays at the Senior Center, from 3:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. For individuals who want to do light exercising or gentle stretching but have limitations, balance issues or are recovering from illness or surgery. 9 WAIST MANAGEMENT HEALTHY FOOD MEET WII SPORTS BOWLING LEAGUE ALL-LEVEL YOGA HOLIDAY BAZAAR OUT TO LUNCH BUNCH Fridays at Noon at the Senior Center Eileen Kehoe and Sandi McDougall facilitate an information session discussing food selection to promote health and wellness. Through mutual support, attendees discover alternative food options to meet personal goals and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Second Fall Season continues this week Team up with fellow Island Seniors and experience virtual bowling on Nintendo s latest video game system, the Wii. Four teams compete throughout the week to win prizes. Register in person at the Senior Center, 2401 Library Way. Thursdays at 10 a.m. at the Senior Center Learn Yoga techniques safely by attending this all-level class. Taught by Dr. Susan Pataky, instruction focuses on basic alignment principles, breathing techniques and relaxation. All ages are welcome to attend Senior Center yoga classes. Saturday, November 22 nd from 9 a.m. 1 p.m. at the Senior Center Island Seniors Inc. is holding their annual Bazaar at the Senior Center! Generated funds from the sale books, movies, CDs, perfume, jewelry, toys and other unwanted merchandise underwrite expenses for the Island Seniors program.
