1 FORT BLISS BUGLE February 15, B When kids are quiet, something s not right Did You Know... By Lisa Smith Molinari Special to the Fort Bliss Bugle Kids, I d yelled into our playroom on a regular basis when our children were small, what s going on in there?! Usually, I d heard roughhousing giggling, knocks against the wall, creaking couch springs, yips and squeals. You d think the innocent sounds of our children playing would warm our hearts, but as experienced parents, Francis and I knew that wholesome noises often lead to bonked heads, chipped teeth and poked eyes. However, there were other times when we hadn t heard squeals, bumps or creaking floorboards. No singing, hammering, smacking or crying. No Barbies being thrown, sippy cups hitting the floor or lamps getting knocked over. What we heard was something far more terrifying: total silence. Let s face it, kids are noisy. They sniffle, babble, fidget, fiddle, whine and wank. Silence is a clear sign that something s wrong. Case in point: One night, when our family was stationed in Virginia. Francis and I let our 5-year-old son, Hayden, and his 2-yearold sister, Anna, watch a video in the playroom before bedtime. Back in those days, we savored every peaceful second that a half-hour video provided as if it were some kind of luxurious spa treatment. As soon as we popped a tape into the VCR, we would dash down the stairs to melt into our couch cushions. With the doors open, we could hear the murmur of the often-played video and the sounds of our kids tinkering with toys. After countless nights of the same routine, we d know exactly when our time was up. But on this night, the half hour flew by without us noticing. Twenty minutes or so after Arthur was over, I nudged Francis. Uh oh I don t hear the kids. Hayden and Anna! Francis yelled up the playroom stairs. What s going on in there? Soon we heard little padded feet scurrying and intermittent giggling. Hayden and Anna appeared downstairs, guilty grins on their tiny faces. The interrogation began. What have you two been doing? we demanded. Anna s enormous brown eyes flashed to her older brother. We were just playing, Hayden said. Just then, I saw that his hands were criss-crossed with green marker scribbles. Anna s hands were purple, her favorite color. Hayden and Anna, you re not supposed to use markers on skin, I scolded. Reaching for a tub of baby wipes, I noticed a green scribble on Anna s neck that dipped below the collar of her footed pajamas. I unzipped her PJs, and gasped. Lisa Smith Molinari / Special to the Fort Bliss Bugle Hayden, right, then 5, and Anna Molinari, then 2, pose for a photo after Hayden drew all over his sister with (washable) magic marker. Anna s chest, belly, arms, legs, feet, hands and back were a green, inky mess. A quick inspection of Hayden revealed that, other than his green hands, he was marker-free. The culprit was obvious. Hayden! Why did you scribble all over your little sister? Francis pressed. I didn t do it, Hayden shrugged. Then how did the word poop get in the middle of Anna s back? Do you expect us to believe that she put it there? She can t even read yet! I barked. We looked down at our sheepish kids, realizing that Hayden had pulled off a classic big brother prank on his adoring little sister. Francis and I tried to maintain a serious demeanor, but one side-glance at each other was all it took to get us laughing. Pretty soon, all four of us were cracking up. Anna had no idea what was so funny, but she laughed right along with us. After a second round of baths to remove the washable marker, we tucked them into bed for the night. We stopped by the playroom to turn out the lights, still smiling about their sweet shenanigans. The grins drained from our faces when we saw what the kids had really been up to. The tattooing of Anna had just been the icing on the cake. The real masterpiece was in our formerly pale yellow playroom. Somehow, in the time it took for us to realize the video had ended, Hayden had managed to create a mural of scribbles on all four walls in every color of the rainbow. And he did it in complete silence. Whoever said, Children should be seen, not heard, clearly wasn t a parent. For more of Molinari s columns, see themeatandpotatoesoflife.com. 2 10B February 15, 2018 FORT BLISS BUGLE Chlorine. Calcium. Magnesium. NOT IN NYOUR WATER! Denise Prieto Nelson / Special to the Fort Bliss Bugle Jeremy Gordon, environmental officer training and compliance coordinator for Cherokee Nation Management and Consulting under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works, conducts training during the Company Commanders and First Sergeant Pre-Command Course at the Gooding Instructional Facility at Fort Bliss Friday. Environmental officer aims to make Fort Bliss even greener By Denise Prieto Nelson Special to the Fort Bliss Bugle Jeremy Gordon is on a mission to help Fort Bliss go green. The (digital) camo days are done, he said. We are back to green and Fort Bliss is going to do this in more ways than one. The former Army sergeant, Recycle Hero and trainer for the Fort Bliss Recycling Program now works for Cherokee Nation Management and Consulting, a contractor under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works. He holds the title of environmental officer training and compliance coordinator, and wears various hats for this position, evincing the hero qualities he employed for three years under the base s recycling program as the Recycle Hero a role that came with a full-fledged super hero costume. I make sure environmental officers will now be trained not just with the information and tools to be compliant. They will receive instruction on the psychology of today s Army and change, Gordon said. When anyone speaks about the environment, it s all about changing the hearts and minds of us all. It s our goal to help them be better prepared to do that when they go return to their units. An important aspect of his role is ensuring everyone on the installation minds their environmental Ps and Qs. This position was started in November. It was created in order to address the (role of the) environmental officer and to have someone to work with them directly to maximize participation, he said. Environmental officers are the eyes and ears for the commanders to make sure everyone is in environmental compliance. An Army regulation issued in 2007 delineates Gordon s job, and through it, he plans to improve environmental compliance at Fort Bliss as much as possible. Instead of it being OK. You guys are coming up on inspection time, you better make sure everything s cleaned up, it should be where everything s that way all the time, Gordon said. The idea is with me coming in now, I ve redone the whole setup for how the training is actually implemented here. He focuses on the what of the program, as well as the how. The emphasis on equipping environmental officers with the tools necessary to do their jobs runs deeper than just checking off boxes on compliance lists. Gordon is determined to change the hearts and minds of his peers for them to gain a broader perspective of what it means to pursue practices that lead to more environmentally friendly behaviors. When you re talking about anything environmental, it s a little more than just trying to get people to comply, he said. It s a whole lot of trying to get them in the mindset that protecting the nation starts right here at home with taking care of what we have for future generations. Under the directive of his position, Gordon focuses on 15 environmental compliance and conservation programs. He pointed out these programs go beyond the obvious, such as recycling, proper hazardous materials containment, cleaning up oil spills and saving water. Rather, the scope is extended to include maintenance of the natural habitat on which the installation sits, including structures and actual archaeologically significant sites. While he pushes forward on his mission to implement sound environmental practices, Gordon remains optimistic his bubble of influence will continue to swell. We all have a bubble of influence and we can create it to be whatever we want it to be, he said. The only thing we can do is keep trying to extend that bubble. Genesis Gomez / 55th Combat Camera Spc. Mitchell Bombeck practices for the swimming competition for the 2017 Department of Defense Warrior Games in Chicago July 6, Soldier prepares for second Warrior Trials at Fort Bliss By MaryTherese Griffin Warrior Care and Transition ARLINGTON, Va. For Spc. Mitchell Bombeck, joining the military was a no brainer. It s a family tradition. The self-proclaimed farm boy from Minnesota became an all-wheel diesel mechanic in the Forward Support Company, 682nd Engineer Battalion in the Minnesota National Guard. At 6 feet, 2 inches tall, weighing 230 pounds, it would seem tough to break such a solid man, but it happened. During a 2015 deployment to Kuwait, Bombeck kept experiencing pain in both hips. When he returned to Fort Bliss, it turned out the problem required surgeries. At the tender age of 22, Bombeck learned he had Deep Water: Get ready for Deep Water. Using a flotation belt, deepwater exercisers will jog, sprint in intervals, wall walk or do a variety of multidimensional movements, including cross-country skiing, longlevered kicks, twists and jumping jacks. Classes are 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and a.m. Fridays at the Aquatic Training Center. The cost is $3 per class or $35 for unlimited monthly pass Texas Basic Hunter Education Class: Are you interested in learning how to hunt? If so, head to the Rod and Gun Club on the second Saturday of every month from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. This is a six-hour class taught by a Texas Parks and Wildlife-certified instructor. Cost: $15 and registration is required. Open to the public Texas Concealed Handgun License classes: The Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club offers Texas License to Carry classes from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. the first and third Saturday of every month. This course fulfills the legal requirements for training to carry a handgun either openly or concealed for self-defense. Register online at bliss. armymwr.com or call Roger Wollenberg Defense Health Agency Spc. Mitchell Bombeck competes in shot put during the 2017 Department of Defense Warrior Games at Soldier Field in Chicago July 5, femoroacetabular impingement, or FAI, a debilitating hip condition that results from the way your bones grow. However, it would not keep him from his job in the Army. He is now proud to have returned to duty after rehabilitation at the Warrior Transition Unit, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The recovery was good, but it was a little complicated and long. They completed the first surgery on my left hip, but weren t able to do the right one because my original surgeon was deployed around the time it was scheduled to happen. They put me into the system and into the Warrior Care and Transition Program, Bomb e c k said. Bombeck spent his time in the program well, fixing what was broken, physically and spiritually. To work on both, his therapist at Fort Campbell had a fitting suggestion. Lindsay (the occupational therapist) told me about the Warrior Games and her exact words were, You re a big Minnesota farm boy. You like to throw stuff; go throw stuff for us, Bombeck said. Bombeck went out and tried the field events; shotput and discus are his specialty. He made Team Army last year and competed at the 2017 Department of Defense Warrior Games in Chicago. He found the experience educational and bonding. The games show all people, whether you served or not, that you can still thrive and continue to live (after an injury), Bombeck said. I m looking forward to hopefully doing all of that again. Bombeck refuses to see his body as being broken. He continues to serve in the Minnesota National Guard and works as a mechanic as a citizen Soldier. During the Army Trials March 3 through 9 at Fort Bliss, Bombeck plans to strengthen that brotherly Army bond and work hard to represent Team Army this year in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The DOD Warrior Games reminds me that I still have potential and something to show the world, Bombeck said. So if I get to go to the games once again, I m gonna put all I got in to making it to the top, getting all the medals I can get and make the Army look great.
