Ray King, III, was named the 2017 Military Order of the Stars and Bars Randall Brackin Jones National Teacher of the Year. Ray will be presented his award during the MOSB Awards Luncheon to be held at the Wilmington National Convention July 7, 2017, at the Best Western Inn & Conference Center in Wilmington. Chapter moves to new meeting location in May RALEIGH The Captain Waddell Chapter will hold our May 18th meeting at a new location - Chow Pizza & Wings, located at 8311 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh. The BBQ Lodge, where we have been meeting for the past several years, closed permanently in February. We will try out Chow Pizza for the May meeting and will vote that night on selecting this venue as our permanent place. Oakwood Service set for May 6th RALEIGH The Annual Confederate Memorial Service set for Raleigh s Oakwood Cemetery will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, beginning at 2:00 PM. Our Chapter is one of the sponsors of the ceremony and we will be placing a wreath during the ceremony. Susan Hathaway, leader of the Virginia Flaggers from Richmond, VA, will be the keynote speakers. Make your plans now to attend. Chapter News Minutes of the February 16th Meeting The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by Adjutant Byron Brady. There were 14 members and guest present. Chaplain David Lanier gave the invocation and Color Sgt. Rick Miller led the flag salutes. Byron Brady entertained a motion that the previous meeting s minutes be approved as published in The Shenandoah. This motion was made, seconded, and approved unanimously. There was no Old Business. New Business: Gary Hall made a motion that Byron Brady be elected the interim Chapter Commander for the remainder of This motion was seconded. After some discussion, the motion passed unanimously. Darwin Roseman discussed the 2017 Confederate Memorial Day service to be held at Oakwood Cemetery on May 6, 2017, beginning at 2:00 PM. Frank Powell volunteered to contact Susan Hathaway, the speaker from Richmond, VA. Frank Powell discussed the Confederate Heritage Day set for the NC General Assembly in Raleigh on May 10th. It was announced that a new SCV Camp being formed in Hawaii is considering the name CSS Shenandoah. Byron Brady introduced Lt. Commander Gary Hall who presented a program on John Randolph of Roanoke. $17 was raised in the chapter raffle. $13 of this went to pay for the speaker s supper. Byron led the singing of Dixie and David Lanier gave the benediction. Commander Brady adjourned the meeting. The Shenandoah, April/May/June 2017, Page 2

3 Commander s Column Thank you for your confidence in electing me the interim Commander of the Captain Waddell Chapter. I hope that you will join me as we move forward to honor the memory of our Confederate ancestors. Please remember that we are one of the sponsoring organizations for the Annual Confederate Memorial Service to be Chapter News held in Raleigh s Oakwood Cemetery on Saturday, May 6, 2017, beginning at 2:00 PM. The ceremony, spearheaded by the Colonel Leonidas Lafayette Polk SCV Camp, Garner, and one of our members Darwin Roseman. Our chapter will be placing a wreath during the ceremony. The head of the Virginia Flaggers, Susan Hathaway of Richmond, Virginia, will be delivering the keynote address. As you already know, the MOSB national convention will be held in Wilmington July 6-8, A convention preregistration form is part of this issue so please consider attending. The convention committee has planned several days of activities which I know you will enjoy. Wilmington, the last major seaport open to the Confederacy during the War for Southern Independence, has a great deal of history for your to experience. Join me in Wilmington in July. Hope to see all of you at our May 18th meeting at the Chow Pizza & Wings Restaurant in Raleigh. My thanks to past commander Frank Powell for securing this venue. Byron E. Brady, Commander David Pope receives Robert E. Lee Scholarship LEXINGTON, VA David Pope, grandson of Captain Waddell Chapter member Bob Pope, has been awarded a MOSB national scholarship. David is currently a freshman at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. His goal is to enlist in the US Navy upon graduation from VMI. David is also a member of VMI s military band. 6 Description of Convention Events Thursday, July 6th Kelly Atkins Hinson Friday, July 7th 6:00-8:00 PM - Commander General s Reception: The Commander General s Reception will be held at the Coastline Inn Conference Center and will feature a visit from Confederate Spy Rose O Neal Greenhow portrayed by Kelly Atkins Hinson of Jackson Springs, North Carolina. Suggested attire - casual. 7:30 AM - Forest Cavalry Corps Breakfast: Sponsored by the Forrest Cavalry Corps, the breakfast will be held at the Coastline Conference Center. Past MOSB CIC Beau Cantrell will be the featured speaker. Price will be announced later. Suggested attire - coat & tie. 9:00 AM - Opening Ceremonies: Coastline Conference Center. Suggested attire - coat & tie. 9:30-11:30 AM - MOSB Business Session I: Coastline Conference Center - Presided over by MOSB CG Harold Franklin Davis, III. Suggested attire - coat & tie. 10:00 AM - Women s Trolley Tour of Historic Wilmington: While the men are in their Business Session I, the women will depart from the hotel on a one-hour trolley tour of the Wilmington historic district. This event is limited to the first 40 people to register. Suggested attire - comfortable casual. Noon - 1:30 PM - MOSB Awards Luncheon: Coastline Conference Center - Presided over by MOSB CG Harold Franklin Davis, III. Suggested attire - coat & tie. Bernhard Thuersam 10:00-11:30 AM - Free tour of Oakdale Cemetery: Linda Lashley of Wilmington will be giving a free tour of Confederate Oakdale Cemetery. The tour will include a Confederate VA grave marker dedication for Brig. Gen. W.H.C. Whiting. Transportation to the cemetery will be on your own with maps provided. Suggested attire - comfortable casual. 2:00 PM - Bus Tour to Fort Fisher: A 45-min bus trip to the Fort Fisher State Historic Site and tour of the fort by Bernhard Thuersam, Chairman of the North Carolina War Between the States Sesquicentennial Commission. Mr. Theursam will describe the Carolinas history beginning in December 1864 and events leading up to the Battle of Fort Fisher. Following a tour of North Carolina s most poplar state historic site, Mr. Theursam will describe the events of the Fall of Fisher and the evacuation of Wilmington on the return bus trip back to the hotel. Fonvielle Jr. 10:00 AM - Women s Backwater Boat Tour: While the men are in their Business Session II, the women will depart from the hotel for a two-hour tour of the historic Wilmington waterfront and the backwaters of the Cape Fear River. This event is limited to the first 40 people to register. Suggested attire - comfortable casual. Unsold seats on the Backwater Tour may be offered to the public. 6:00 PM - Commander General s Banquet - Cape Fear Club: Held in the oldest continuous Gentleman s Club in the South, the Commander General s Banquet will feature Dr. Chris E. Fonvielle Jr., local author and historian speaking on Last Rays of Departing Hope. The Cape Fear Club was founded by Confederate Veterans in Wilmington in Paid parking is available adjacent to the Cape Fear Club in a city-owned parking deck. The event includes a social hour with a cash bar beginning at 6:00 PM and supper beginning at 7:00 PM. This event is limited to the first 80 people to register. Suggested attire - Formal, coat and tie or Confederate uniform for the men and formal or period attire for the women. Please note that this event is on the second level of the Cape Fear Club and is not ADA accessible. Heritage Day at the North Carolina Legislature May 10, 2017 Members will gather in the 1100 court (NE court) of the NC General Assembly Building at 9:00 AM where information tables will be set up for each group. Members will visit their state senators and representatives throughout the day and explain our organizations to lawmakers, staffers, and visitors. Dress is coat and tie or uniform, no exceptions! Lafayette Mclaws MOSB Chapter, and the Savannah SCV Camp and UDC Chapter was held March 27, 2017 to welcome the leaders of the national MOSB. See photo at left. Brady, Commander General Harold Franklin Davis, III, and Sons of the Revolution General President Mitchell Bush at a special meeting of the Gen. Lafayette Mclaws MOSB Chapter 97, Savannah.
