3 Sons of Confederate Veterans Page 3 Norris Camp Spring Cleanup on April 9 As camp members and friends know, the Norris camp has been part of Montgomery County's Adopt-A-Rustic Road program for a number of years. We periodically pick up the trash alongside Martinsburg Road in Dickerson, Md. This space of road is historically significant as many of our ancestors walked this way in September 1862 after crossing the Potomac River at White s Ford and then moving up to Frederick, Md. Most know that this preceded the Battles of South Mountain, Maryland Heights (Elk Ridge Mountain), Harpers Ferry and finally Sharpsburg. The Norris camp attempts to clean this section of road about six times per year. This will be the first time this calendar year that we will clean the road. It typically takes even a small crew only about 1-1/2 hours to do the job. This year, however, we are doing double duty and so we really need YOU to come out on Saturday, April 9, at 9 a.m. Every year there is a project to clean the river banks of the historic Potomac River. The Norris camp has participated and supported this effort for many years now. Guess what stretch of the river we clean up? That s right, from White s Ford up to the road that leads away from Dickerson Regional Park. So this year we are doing both cleanups on the same day along the same route that OUR ancestors walked upon. With enough participants we can knock both jobs out in less than four hours. Usually, the land along the river side is somewhat muddy from spring rains so bring appropriate footwear and clothing. The camp provides all of the supplies including bottled water to drink. If you want to bring along a lunch then we can make a good time of it in service to our community as well as to the memory of our ancestors. No Confederate haters can take offense with this project so come on out and stand on the high ground of the right thing to do! We start at 9 a.m. and meet in the parking lot of Dickerson Regional Park. This is the same location that we perform our River Crossing event every late August. For more information contact either 1st Lt Commander Dave Redden or 2nd Lt Commander Dave King Jr. Contact information is shown on the last page of this newsletter.
