1 Friday Fast Facts September 26, 2014 Volume 2 Issue 33 Frank and Suzanne Canada and members of Titusville Fire & Emergency Services and the Kennedy Honor Guard had a visit Sept. 14 from Mark Hendry, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Ayr Community Fire Station (Scotland), his fiancé Lisa Gouck, and her daughter, Jenna. Honor Guard members first met Mark in Scotland in June during a tour of his fire station, arranged by Lord Charles. We reciprocated by treating them to a tour of Fire Headquarters and our fire stations. Frank then assisted Mark with a romantic conspiracy he had planned. Under the guise of having Lisa experience climbing the ladder of the fire truck (in a horizontal position), Mark was waiting when Lisa returned to the end of the ladder. Instead of immediately helping her down, Mark privately professed his feelings for Lisa and her daughter, dropped to his knee, held out the ring and asked her to marry him. Lisa was totally taken by surprise, but although shaking and nervous, she said YES! Proof once more of our department s motto: Service doesn t come from a manual it comes from the heart! Fire Chief (EM Manager) Woodward, Operations Chief Lindquist, EMS/Training Manager Sutton, IT Manager Story and Office Manager Mosley attended an introductory session of BOB this week, presented by Michelle Jones, Operations Manager with the Brevard County Emergency Management office. BOB (Brevard Operations Base) SharePoint software replaces E-Team in our countywide response and recovery coordination. This system will provide our EM Team with access to situation reporting, resource requests, damage assessment reporting and a briefing view with a summary of operations. Ms. Jones also provided our team with a binder that has a user-guide, updated phone lists, reference information and forms for communications with the Brevard County EOC during an incident. These will be copied and maintained with each EM Sections GO-Boxes for use during an activation of the EOC. Affected EM Team members will also undergo training. Titusville Fire and Emergency Services will again be showing our support for the families, friends and loved ones affected by breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Beginning October 1 st, fire personnel will be going pink to show our support and help raise awareness of this disease and the search for a cure. You can help us raise awareness and purchase one of these shirts, showing your support for this worthy cause. Order a shirt in person at HQ, or via to EMS/Training Chief Greg Sutton, but you must pay for the order prior to Oct. 1 st. The shirts will become available Oct. 8 th. Additional orders may be made as needed. Adult sizes S-XL :$ XL and 3XL:$14.00 Page 1 of 6

2 The fire crew at Fire Station #13 responded to the needs of a different kind of patient last week. Acting Lieutenant Josh Hall, Firefighter Jason Lengefeld, Acting Driver Olivier Harper, Firefighter Aaron Jolly and Firefighter Shaun Fisher were on duty at the station when a bystander related to the crew that a lawn maintenance person with the City pointed out there was an injured Bald Eagle lying in a fire ant pile, with an obvious right wing injury, on the northeast side of the fire station. After calling FWC and not able to get an ETA, it was decided to go to Young's Animal Hospital to see if they could help. Young s sent two of their Vet Techs with a crate and some blankets. Josh, Jason and Olivier helped secure the bird and placed it in the crate. Once at Young's, Dr. Angela Bockelman assessed the Eagle and related that he has an obvious fracture of the right wing and further X-ray revealed a severe fracture to the right leg, as if he was struck by a car. Dr. Bockelman began treatment in the form of fluids and pain medication, but unfortunately while attempting to better x-ray the bird, it passed away. A valiant effort was made by the fire crew and Young's Animal Hospital to help this rare and endangered beautiful male eagle. The next day, Young s Animal Hospital presented the department with a framed print of the eagle s talon and their thanks. Special recognition to this fire crew for their valiant efforts in attempting to save one of our Nation's Symbols, the American Bald Eagle. City Manager Scott Larese toured the facilities of the Fire and Emergency Services Department last Friday. He met H.Q. staff personnel and then visited each fire station, introducing himself to the crew members. Fire Chief Woodward also showed him the future site of the department s training facility and discussed operational issues and future department plans. Operations Chief Lindquist, Life Safety Specialist Gilmore and Logistics Coordinator Canada met with George Spencer, Disaster Program Manager of the American Red Cross. His organization has secured funding for installing smoke detectors in the central Florida area. Titusville Fire and Emergency Services Department will be partnering with the American Red Cross to install up to 100 free smoke detectors in Titusville homes during Autumn. On September 23, 2014, Logistics Coordinator Frank Canada and Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore gave a presentation to the Titusville Historical Society. Mr. Canada informed the group of the history of Titusville Fire & Emergency Services Department and provided them with an assembled written synopsis of our history. Mrs. Gilmore informed the group regarding our File of Life Program and distributed Did You Know, a pamphlet that informs the public on services that Titusville Fire & Emergency Services provides to the public, and more. A total of 38 individuals from the Historical Society attended the lecture. Page 2 of 6

3 On September 13, 2014, Life Safety Specialist Heather Gilmore attended the North Brevard Senior Center s Ladies Day Out event. Titusville Fire & Emergency Services Department provided a table display which included free Files Of Life, Slip and Fall Prevention Program safety pamphlets, Did You Know informational sheets on the services that Titusville Fire & Emergency Services provides to the public, fire prevention pamphlets and more. A total of 250 ladies visited the display table. On Monday, the Fire and Emergency Services Department welcomed it newest employee, Firefighter Dana Hersey. Dana has lived in the area for the past 14 years and had worked with the Mims Volunteer Fire Department, originally as a noncertified support member. He obtained his State Minimum Standards of Firefighting and his Emergency Medical Technician certificates in Dana expressed, I m very happy and excited to be here and look forward to being a part of the team! Friends, family and co-workers were present Thursday as Chad Lindquist was formally pinned as Division Chief of Operations in the Fire and Emergency Services Department by his children. Through his efforts, Chad rose through the ranks to his new command position, second only to Fire Chief Woodward in rank and authority. Chief Woodward commented, Chad, I have chosen you because I know you have the abilities and capabilities of leadership, mentorship, and the moral and ethical strength to undertake your responsibilities and discharge them with honor and distinction. With the donning of this badge, I charge you to recommit your loyalty to our team and its members and your continued dedication to our department. Chad s responded, I am thankful that I ve been given this opportunity and I look forward to the future of our department. 4 Laura Canady, Director of Economic Development attended the Canaveral Port Authority Commission meeting on September 17th. It was discussed that Port Canaveral is working to finalize a deal for warehouse space in Titusville to help shore up its cargo business. Port commissioners unanimously approved plans for the port to negotiate a lease purchase option for 240,300 square foot of warehouse/distribution building that Flagler Global Logistics will be developing along U.S. 1 as part of its 230-acre Titusville Logistics Center, southeast of the Space Coast Regional Airport. The site is part of an effort to support North Brevard s growing cargo and logistics businesses. On Sunday, September 21, 2014, Titusville Police dispatch received a call regarding a boat sinking in the middle of the Indian River in front of Cracker Jacks. They advised a white male was on the boat frantically asking for help. Several Officers responded to the scene with Officer Slack arriving first. He ran to the end of the fishing pier and observed the male in the water about 150 yards from the pier. Officer Slack then removed his belt and boots, dove in from the pier, swam out to the male and, with the assistance of a civilian in a boat, made their way back to the sea wall. FWC arrived on scene and was helping to recover the boat.
