25 One of the future challenges facing the Patrol Division will be the growing number of drivers involved in drugged driving. Changes in Marijuana laws have already resulted in an increase in drugged drivers MADD reports that the drug showing the greatest increase among drivers between was marijuana. Additional training is required to investigate and prosecute drugged drivers

Protocols and procedures were reviewed and changes made to enhance Court Security and address safety concerns.

Citations are issued only when necessary to change animal owner behaviors. This is often after working with the animal owner to comply with the statute.

Many of the hours reflected in the above activities would have resulted in Patrol Deputies leaving assigned Patrol Areas to provide these services. Activities like hospital sits with inmates would have been a mandatory call in and paid overtime for Corrections or Patrol Deputies.

39 2016 Awards and Recognition Deputy Joe Borgic,assigned to Lee Twp. Received an award for Professional Excellence from Undersheriff Baker for his part in solving a bank robbery that occurred in Van Buren County. Deputies Kevin Christensen,Gregg Berens, Scott Szekely, Chuck Culver, Ben Haas, Josh Cole, and Sgt. Brett Ensfield received Professional Excellence Awards last year at a BOC meeting.

40 2016 Awards and Recognition Deputy Vonda Evers received a Lifesaving Awardfrom Undersheriff Baker at a Martin Twp. Meeting. DeputyJason Kruithoff, Deputy Michael Murphy, Deputy Brandon Berens, and Deputy Cory Harris received the MADD Award for their efforts arresting Drunk Drivers last year. Sheriff Koops presented them at a BOC meeting.
