2 JBSA-MILITARY & FAMILY READINESS SERVICES Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Military & Family Readiness (M&FR) is dedicated to providing a full range of quality programs and services that promote self-reliance, mission readiness, resiliency and ease adaptation into the military way of life. This gives students an opportunity to start school with all the supplies they need to be successful. Donated backpacks filled with items from the school supplies list will be collected July 23- August 3. First Sergeants, M&FR Financial Counselors, MFLC, Family Advocacy, and School District Counselors and Administrators should nominate eligible families to receive a backpack by contacting the SLO no later than August 3. ARMED FORCES ACTION PLAN AFAP provides patrons with an opportunity to identify critical issues and present them to senior leadership for action and resolution. It s a chance to voice your ideas and provide feedback. Issues pertain to many different subject areas, from healthcare to childcare, housing to force protection, employment to recreation, education and more. It s everything that affects our military community. WIC Services offered on JBSA-Fort Sam Houston The JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Military & Family Readiness Center has partnered with the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program to bring services closer to military families. WIC provides support to expecting parents from pregnancy to delivery to raising the child up to 5 years of age. Meet with a clerk, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or Nutritionist at the M&FRC every 1st Tuesday and 3rd Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., to learn about nutrition, breastfeeding, counseling services, or determine if you meet financial requirements for the supplemental nutritional program. RELOCATION ASSISTANCE (210) Reduce or eliminate problems arising due to frequent moves with specialized services such as: individual or group counseling; sponsorship and pre-arrival information; mandatory overseas briefings and post-move orientations; lending closet; and immigration services. LENDING CLOSET Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed 1st & 3rd Thursday 1-4 p.m. The Lending Closet loans basic household goods while yours are in transit; kitchen equipment, high chairs, sleeping mats, irons and more. Permanent party, students, TDY, retirees and civilians may borrow items up to 30 days. Please bring a copy of your orders. NEWCOMER S ORIENTATION June 1, 15 & July 6, 20 8 a.m. to Noon A mandatory in-processing briefing for all military and civilian personnel newly assigned to JBSA, family members are welcomed to attend. Service members must coordinate attendance with their Unit Personnel. Patrons must sign in and be seated by 7:50 a.m. This is more than a traditional in-processing M&FRC JBSA-FSH briefing, representatives from agencies throughout the community will be onsite to share information. IMMIGRATION & CITIZENSHIP June 12 & July 10 9 a.m. to Noon June 26 & July 24 9 a.m. to Noon, Ceremony 2 p.m. Meet with a Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) Officer for assistance with applications. Join us in observing service members and their families take the Oath of Allegiance at the Naturalization Ceremony at 2 p.m. and welcome them as new U.S. citizens. Registration is not required. RELOCATION & OVERSEAS ORIENTATION June 13 & July 11 9:30-10:30 a.m./ 1:30-2:30 p.m. Mandatory for personnel E-5 and below; topics covered include: entitlement, shipment of household goods, emotional stressors of relocation, employment, and education. Only one session is needed. TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP)/ SOLDIER FOR LIFE JBSA-FSH Soldier for Life, Bldg. 2264, Ste. 102 (210) TAP provides counseling and job assistance to service members preparing to leave the federal service. Services include: pre-separation counseling, benefits, job search training, selfassessment tools, resume review, job analyzer software, and referral to service providers. PRE-SEPARATION COUNSELING Tuesdays Army: 8:30-11 a.m.; All Other Branches: 12:30-4 p.m. Service members planning to separate or retire from the federal service must attend this mandatory counseling. Service members may schedule appointments up to 24-months before their retirement date; Airmen, Sailors, and Marines up to 12-months prior to separation; and Soldiers up to 18-months prior to separation. FEDERAL APPLICATION PROCESS June a.m. Review the federal employment process and careers offered by the government. Learn about resources that support the Veteran s Employment Program, skills translator, resume builders, and more. ACCESSING HIGHER EDUCATION June 4-6, 18-20, & July 9-11, a.m. to 4 p.m. A 3-day track to help service members achieve academic success by preparing for college life or re-entering school. Reviewing credit transfers, researching schools, financial assistance, vocational education counseling and more. Held at the Education Center, Bldg Prerequisite: Transition GPS. June & July a.m. to 4 p.m. Service members that already have a Bachelor s degree may attend an accelerated 2-day version. Prerequisite: Transition GPS. CAREER TECHNICAL TRAINING June a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn about civilian careers that require a license or certificate, identify schools and accredited institutions, financial aid, VA benefits, apprenticeships and more. Prerequisite: Transition GPS. TROOPS TO TEACHERS June 21 & July 19 Noon to 2 p.m. Eligible military personnel in pursuit of teaching as a second career review topics like education and licensing requirements, employment leads, counseling, placement and financial assistance, and more. MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELORS (MFLC) (210) or Military & Family Life Counselors help service members, their families, and significant others in addressing issues from deployment and reintegration, marriage and relationships, stress and anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and other daily life issues. Consultations and trainings are anonymous, no records are kept. Call to schedule an appointment; meetings may be arranged off-site, after-hours, and on weekends. For Warriors Transition Battalion, call MILITARY CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP June 14 & July a.m. to Noon Caregivers have the opportunity to build a support network, share experiences, and information. This group meets at the Warrior Family Support Center. 7 JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM (210) EFMP is a mandatory enrollment program that assists service members and their families with special, physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual needs. TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP) TAP provides counseling and job assistance to service members, DoD civilians, and family members preparing to leave federal service. TRANSITION GOALS, PLANS, SUCCESS (GPS) June & July a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A mandatory 5-day workshop for all service members separating from the military. Facilitated by the Department of Labor, Veterans Administration, and M&FR. Spouses welcomed. Prerequisite: Pre-Separation. VA STAND ALONE WORKSHOP June 22 & July 27 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those exempt from the mandatory 5-day Transition GPS Workshop must attend a Veterans Administration stand-alone workshop. Topics covered include critical VA programs and services ranging from general benefits information, disability compensation, and GI Bill benefit. Prerequisite: Pre- Separation. BOOTS TO BUSINESS July :30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A 2-day entrepreneurial education workshop hosted by the Small Business Administration. Discuss opportunities and challenges of business ownership; review steps for evaluating business concepts; foundational knowledge for developing a business plan; information on SBA resources available to help access start-up capital; and additional technical assistance. CAREER TECHNICAL TRAINING July a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn about civilian careers that require a license or certificate, identify schools and accredited institutions, financial aid, VA benefits, apprenticeships and more during this 2-part workshop. EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM EFMP is a mandatory enrollment program that works with military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated community support, housing, educational, medical, and personnel services to active duty personnel and their family members.
