FORUM AFAP FORUM FY19 Oct a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct :30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 1 8:30 a.m. to Noon Throughout the year, comments and suggestions identifying qualityof-life issues affecting the military community are collected and consolidated for the AFAP Forum. Volunteer delegates consisting of service members (Active Duty, Reserve and Guard from all branches of services), Retirees, spouses, teens, Gold Star family members and DoD civilians employees, review the collected issues and form working groups to address specific areas of concern like healthcare, force support, family support, and youth topics. Delegates prioritize and select the top issues they believe are important to maintain a good standard of living and present them to local leadership for action and resolution. A status update for the issue will be available online at a later date. The Armed Forces Action Plan is a platform to voice quality-of-life issues, feedback, ideas, and suggestions - a tool to help identify issues and concerns and shape your standards of living. It s the best way to let leadership know what works, what doesn t, and how you think problems can be resolved. RELOCATION ASSISTANCE (210) Reduce or eliminate problems arising due to frequent moves with specialized services such as individual or group counseling; sponsorship and pre-arrival information; mandatory overseas briefings and post-move orientations; lending closet; and immigration services. Call for more information or to sign up for a class. LENDING CLOSET Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed 1st & 3rd Thursday 1-4 p.m. The Lending Closet loans essential household goods like kitchen equipment, high chairs, sleeping mats, irons and more, while yours are in transit. Permanent party, students, TDY, retirees, and civilians may borrow items up to 30 days. Please bring a copy of your orders. NEWCOMER S ORIENTATION Oct. 5, 19 & Nov. 2, 16 8 a.m. to Noon A mandatory in-processing brief for all military and civilian personnel newly assigned to JBSA; family members welcome. Service members must coordinate attendance with their Unit Personnel. Patrons must sign in and be seated by 7:50 a.m. This is more than a traditional in-processing M&FRC JBSA-FSH briefing, representatives from agencies throughout the community are on-site to share information. IMMIGRATION & CITIZENSHIP Oct. 9 & Nov a.m. to Noon Oct. 23 & Nov a.m. to Noon; Ceremony 2 p.m. Meet with a Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) Officer for assistance with applications. Join us in observing service members and their families take the Oath of Allegiance during the Naturalization Ceremony at 2 p.m., and welcome them as new U.S. citizens. Registration is not required. RELOCATION & OVERSEAS ORIENTATION Oct. 10 & Nov. 14 9:30-10:30 a.m./ 1:30-2:30 p.m. Mandatory for personnel E-5 and below; topics covered include: entitlement, shipment of household goods, emotional stressors of relocation, employment, and education. Only one session is needed. SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION TRAINING Oct. 17 & Nov p.m. Completion of the Electronic Sponsorship Application & Training (esat) is mandatory for all military sponsors and is available online at A Relocation specialist can assist with questions or provide clarification. TRAILS & TALES GUIDED TOUR Oct a.m. Located in the heart of San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston houses the largest collection of historic buildings in the Department of Defense! Join us for a guided tour and learn about its rich history. This tour is the last of the 2018 season; Trails & Tales will return January Limited seating, registration is required. Participants must bring a current LES, spouse s income information (if applicable), a list of monthly expenses, and debt information (total balance owed, monthly payment, and Annual Percent Rate). Learn how to interpret federal vacancy announcements and become familiar with the USAJOBS website, set notifications about new job postings, and tailor your resume. GENERAL RESUME WRITING Oct. 10 & Nov a.m. Learn different resume formats and which one to use while writing a non- Federal resume. Receive tips that help effectively prepare a summary statement, employment history, and more. TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP)/ SOLDIER FOR LIFE JBSA-FSH Soldier for Life, Bldg. 2264, Ste. 102 (210) TAP provides counseling and job assistance to service members preparing to leave federal service. Services include pre-separation counseling, benefits, job search training, self-assessment tools, resume review, job analyzer software, and referral to service providers. Call to schedule an appointment or sign up. PRE-SEPARATION COUNSELING Tuesdays Army: 8:30 a.m. to Noon; All Other Branches: 12:30-4 p.m. Service members planning to separate or retire from the federal service must attend this mandatory counseling. Retiring service members may schedule appointments up to 24 months before their retirement date. Separating Airmen, Sailors, and Marines may schedule appointments up to 12 months before separation and Soldiers up to 18 months before separation. Held at Soldier for Life, Bldg TRANSITION GOALS, PLANS, SUCCESS (GPS) Oct. 1-5, 15-19*, 22-26, Oct. 29-Nov. 2, Nov * 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A mandatory 5-day workshop for all service members leaving the military. Facilitated by the Department of Labor, Veterans Administration, and M&FR. Held in the basement of Bldg *Retiree-only dates. Prerequisite: Pre- Separation Counseling. FEDERAL APPLICATION PROCESS Oct a.m. Review the federal employment process and careers offered by the government. Learn about resources that support the Veteran s Employment Program, skills translator, resume builders, and more. Held at Soldier for Life, Bldg ACCESSING HIGHER EDUCATION Oct. 9-10*, 15-17, a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 5-7, 13-14*, a.m. to 4 p.m. This 3-day track helps service members achieve academic success by preparing for college life, re-entering school, reviewing credit transfers, researching schools, exploring financial aid assistance, providing vocational education counseling and more. *Service members with a Bachelor s degree may attend an accelerated 2-day workshop. Held at the Education Center, Bldg Prerequisite: Transition GPS. This track is optional. CAREER EXPLORATION & PLANNING Oct a.m. to 4 p.m. Formerly known as the Career Technical Training Track, service members identify skills, increase awareness of training and credentialing programs, and develop an action plan to achieve career goals. Held in the basement of Bldg Prerequisite: Transition GPS. This track is optional. TROOPS TO TEACHERS Oct. 18 & Nov. 15 Noon to 2 p.m. Eligible military personnel in pursuit of teaching as a second career review topics like education and licensing requirements, employment leads, counseling, placement and financial assistance, and more. 7 JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELORS (MFLC) (210) Military & Family Life Counselors help service members, their families, and significant others by discussing issues from deployment and reintegration, marriage and relationships, stress and anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and other life concerns. Consultations are anonymous with no records kept. Call to schedule an appointment; meetings may be arranged off-site, after-hours, and on weekends. PERSONAL FINANCIAL COUNSELOR Personal Financial Counselors provide free financial counseling services to service members and their families. Consultations are anonymous with no records kept. Some evening and weekend times are available. To schedule a consultation, call (210) MILITARY CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP Oct. 11 & Nov a.m. to Noon Caregivers have the opportunity to build a support network, share experiences and information. This group meets at the Warrior Family Support Center. VA STAND ALONE WORKSHOP Oct. 26 & Nov a.m. to 3 p.m. Those exempt from the mandatory 5-day Transition GPS Workshop must attend a Veterans Administration stand-alone workshop. Topics covered include critical VA programs and services ranging from general benefits information, disability compensation, and GI Bill benefit. Prerequisite: Pre- Separation. CAREER EXPLORATION & PLANNING Oct a.m. to 4 p.m. Formerly known as the Career Technical Training Track, service members identify skills, increase awareness of training and credentialing programs, and develop an action plan to achieve career goals. Prerequisite: Transition GPS. This track is optional. BOOTS TO BUSINESS Oct :30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A 2-day entrepreneurial education workshop hosted by the Small Business Administration. Discuss opportunities and challenges of business ownership. Review steps for evaluating business concepts, foundational knowledge for developing a business plan, SBA resources to help access start-up capital, and additional technical assistance. Prerequisite: Transition GPS. This track is optional. MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELORS (MFLC) (210) or Military & Family Life Counselors help service members, their families, and significant others address deployment and reintegration issues; marriage, relationship and family issues; stress and anxiety; depression, grief and loss; and daily life issues. All military members returning from a deployment are required to attend this briefing. This training reviews reintegration into home life and provides resources to deal with associated stressors. PRE-DEPLOYMENT: PERSONAL & FAMILY READINESS BRIEFING Oct. 9, 23 & Nov. 6, a.m. Oct. 5, 12, 19, p.m. All military members scheduled to deploy, go TDY longer than 30 days or on a remote assignment are required to attend this briefing. Military spouses are encouraged to attend to learn about various programs and resources available to them. FEDERAL VOTING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM The Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) provides information to service members, their family, and overseas citizens. Services include assistance with voter registration, absentee voting, how to fill out forms, and more.
