2 JBSA-MILITARY & FAMILY READINESS SERVICES Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Military & Family Readiness (M&FR) is dedicated to providing a full range of quality programs and services that promote self-reliance, mission readiness, resiliency and ease adaptation into the military way of life. RELOCATION ASSISTANCE (210) Reduce or eliminate problems arising due to frequent moves with specialized services such as individual or group counseling; sponsorship and pre-arrival information; mandatory overseas briefings and post-move orientations; lending closet; and immigration services. LENDING CLOSET Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed 1st & 3rd Thursday 1-4 p.m. The Lending Closet offers basic household goods like kitchen equipment, high chairs, sleeping mats, irons and more, while yours are in transit. Permanent party, students, TDY, retirees, and civilians may borrow items up to 30 days. Please bring a copy of your orders. NEWCOMER S ORIENTATION April 6, 20 & May 4, 18 8 a.m. to Noon A mandatory in-processing briefing for all military and civilian personnel newly assigned to JBSA, family members are welcomed to attend. Service members must coordinate attendance with their Unit Personnel. Patrons must sign in and be seated by 7:50 a.m. This is more than a traditional in-processing briefing, representatives from agencies throughout the community will be onsite to share information. IMMIGRATION & CITIZENSHIP April 10, 24 & May 8, 22 9 a.m. to Noon Meet with a Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) Officer for assistance with applications. RELOCATION & OVERSEAS ORIENTATION April 11 & May 9 9:30-10:30 a.m./ 1:30-2:30 p.m. Mandatory for personnel E-5 and below; topics covered include: entitlement, shipment of household goods, emotional stressors of relocation, employment, and education. Only one session is needed. SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION TRAINING April 18 & May p.m. Completion of the Electronic Sponsorship Application & Training (esat) is mandatory for all military sponsors and is available online at A Relocation specialist can assist with questions or provide clarification. TRAILS & TALES GUIDED TOUR April 27 & May a.m. Located in the heart of San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston houses the largest collection of historic buildings in the Department of Defense! Join us for a guided tour and learn about its rich history. Seating is limited, registration required. Participants must bring a current LES, spouse s income information (if applicable), a list of monthly expenses, and debt information (total balance owed, monthly payment, and Annual Percent Rate). TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP)/ SOLDIER FOR LIFE JBSA-FSH Soldier for Life, Bldg. 2264, Ste. 102 (210) TAP provides counseling and job assistance to service members preparing to leave the federal service. Services include pre-separation counseling, benefits, job search training, selfassessment tools, resume review, job analyzer software, and referral to service providers. PRE-SEPARATION COUNSELING April 3, 17 & May 1, 15, 29 9 a.m. to Noon Airmen, Sailors, and Marines planning to separate or retire from the federal service must attend this mandatory counseling. Appointments may be scheduled up to 24-months before retirement date or 12-months prior to separation. ACCESSING HIGHER EDUCATION April 9-11, 23-25, April 30-May 2, May 7-9, a.m. to 4 p.m. A 3-day track to help service members achieve academic success by preparing for college life or re-entering school. Reviewing credit transfers, researching schools, financial assistance, vocational education counseling and more. Held at the Education Center, Bldg Prerequisite: Transition GPS. April & May a.m. to 4 p.m. Service members that already have a Bachelor s degree may attend an accelerated 2-day workshop at the Education Center, Bldg Prerequisite: Transition GPS. FEDERAL APPLICATION PROCESS April 9 & May a.m. Review the federal employment process and careers offered by the government. Learn about resources that support the Veteran s Employment Program, skills translator, resume builders, and more. CAREER TECHNICAL TRAINING April & May a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn about civilian careers that require a license or certificate, identify schools and accredited institutions, financial aid, VA benefits, apprenticeships and more. Prerequisite: Transition GPS. TROOPS TO TEACHERS April 19 & May 17 Noon to 2 p.m. Eligible military personnel in pursuit of teaching as a second career review topics like education and licensing requirements, employment leads, counseling, placement and financial assistance, and more. BOOTS TO BUSINESS May a.m. to 4 p.m. A 2-day entrepreneurial education workshop hosted by the Small Business Administration. Discuss opportunities and challenges of business ownership; review steps for evaluating business concepts; foundational knowledge for developing a business plan; information on SBA resources available to help access start-up capital; and additional technical assistance. Prerequisite: Transition GPS. MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELORS (MFLC) (210) or Military & Family Life Counselors help service members, their families, and significant others by discussing issues from deployment and reintegration, marriage and relationships, stress and anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and other life concerns. Consultations are anonymous with no records kept. Call to schedule an appointment; meetings may be arranged off-site, after-hours, and on weekends. MILITARY CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP April 12 & May a.m. to Noon Caregivers have the opportunity to build a support network, share experiences, and information. This group meets at the Warrior Family Support Center. For more information, call (210) PERSONAL FINANCIAL COUNSELOR Personal Financial Counselors provide free financial counseling services to service members and their families. Consultations are anonymous with no records kept. Some evening and weekend availability. To schedule a consultation, call (210) EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM (210) EFMP is a mandatory enrollment program that assists service members and their families with special, physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual needs. EFMP works with military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated medical, educational, housing, community support, and personnel services. Call for details or to register. LUNCH N LEARN WITH EFMP HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH DYSLEXIA April 11 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Learn about dyslexia with guest speaker, Katy Kloberdanz, Region 20 Educational Specialist, as we debunk common myths and misconception. Discover strategies to help support your child and become their advocates at school and home. This is a brown bag forum, call to reserve a seat. YOUR GUIDE TO EFMP We know the system. We can help. May p.m. Whether newly enrolled or just curious about the program, this class will guide you in understanding what an EFM is, how to enroll, where to find support, and what impacts it may have on you and your family. Leaders are encouraged to attend to learn about requirements of the program and the resources available to their service members. SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICE JBSA-FSH Bldg. 2263, Room 107 (210) The School Liaison Office assists parents with children in grades K-12. SLO can help with the transition between schools; provide information about local school systems, policies, programs and more. PCS ING WITH SCHOOL AGE YOUTH April 11 & May 9 Noon to 1:30 p.m. Changing schools can be exceptionally hard for you and your children. Explore resources and receive guidance to help with transferring your child to a new school. Get familiar with the MIC3 laws, course placement, absences due to PCS, transcript documentation, special needs, graduation requirements and more. Open to parents with children in grades K-12 that are anticipating or have received orders for their next assignment. MENTOR TRAINING April 18 & May :30 a.m. Volunteer mentors spend time with young people and encourage them to make positive choices. After completion, participants are placed within a local public school. Facilitated by the SLO and Community in Schools. Services include assistance with voter registration, absentee voting, how to fill out forms, and more. Planning ahead can help prepare a smooth relocation to your new duty assignment. There are tons of resources to help you take charge of your PCS move! We can provide consultation for military moves, first overseas moves, or those with challenging and complex situations like special needs family members or financial problems. In conjunction with a PCS, free child care may also be available. Relocation Assistance Services - Request information about your new location, housing referrals, education and training for overseas departure, inter-cultural relations, and esponsorship application and training. Financial Management - A move can put a strain on your finances, our Readiness Consultants might be able to help with a budget or other resources. Employment Assistance - Get a jump start on employment at your new location and learn about local employment and volunteer opportunities. School Liaison Office - For grades K-12, you may need information about local schools and other education options including home schooling, private schools, and charter schools. They can also help with transcripts and the enrollment process. Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) - Some family members may require special medical, housing, or educational accommodations.
