2 JBSA-MILITARY & FAMILY READINESS SERVICES The Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Military & Family Readiness Centers (M&FRC) are dedicated to providing a full range of quality programs and services that promote self-reliance, mission readiness, resiliency and ease adaptation into the military way of life. It s a chance to voice your ideas and provide feedback. Issues pertain to many different subject areas, from health care to child care, housing to force protection, employment to recreation, education and more. It s everything that affects our military community. SUBMIT YOUR COMMENTS In Person - AFAP comment boxes are placed at various location across JBSA and at all M&FRC locations. All DoD ID cardholders - Service Members of any branch (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, and Coast Guard no matter what status), military spouses, teens, retirees, survivors, DoD civilian employees (Appropriated and Non-appropriated), and family members may submit an issue. The JBSA-School Liaison Office (SLO) Build-a-Backpack program provides backpacks full of school supplies to military families experiencing financial hardships. This give students an opportunity to start school with all the supplies they need to be successful. All filled backpack donations must be turned in no later than by Aug 10. Backpacks may be dropped off at any JBSA-M&FRC or JBSA-Library. First Sergeants, M&FRC Financial Counselors, MFLC, and Family Advocacy may nominate eligible families to receive a backpack by contacting the SLO no later than Aug 10. WIC Services now offered on Fort Sam Houston The JBSA-Fort Sam Houston Military & Family Readiness Center has partnered with the Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program to bring services closer to military families. A clerk and either a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Nutritionist for WIC will be on-site every first Tuesday and third Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., to help families determine if they meet financial requirements for the supplemental nutritional program. Breastfeeding support and counseling services are open to all JBSA patrons. To learn more about the WIC program or to schedule an appointment, call (210) WIC is an equal opportunity program.

5 JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON 8 JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON INFORMATION & REFERRAL (210) or Information & Referral helps DoD ID cardholders and their families connect with the right resources to meet their specific needs on JBSA or within the local community. RELOCATION ASSISTANCE (210) Reduce or eliminate problems arising due to frequent moves with specialized services such as: individual or group counseling; sponsorship and pre-arrival information; mandatory overseas briefings and post-move orientations; lending closet; and immigration services. Call for more information or to sign up for a class. LENDING CLOSET Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed 1st & 3rd Thursday 1-4 p.m. The Lending Closet loans basic household goods while yours are in transit; kitchen equipment, high chairs, sleeping mats, irons and more. Permanent party, students, TDY, retirees and civilians may borrow items up to 30 days. Please bring a copy of your orders. NEWCOMER S ORIENTATION & SPOUSE INFORMATION FAIR Aug 4, 18, 31 & Sept 15 8 a.m. to Noon Mandatory in-processing briefing for all military and civilian personnel newly assigned to JBSA. All patrons must be seated by 7:50 a.m.; service members must coordinate with their Unit Personnel. The Spouse Information Fair M&FRC JBSA-FSH is held in conjunction the Newcomer s Orientation. Vendors and supporting agencies will be on-site to meet with patrons at 10:30 a.m. CITIZENSHIP & IMMIGRATION ASSISTANCE Aug 8 & Sept 12 9 a.m. to Noon Aug 22 & Sept 26 9 a.m. to Noon, Ceremony 2 p.m. Meet with a Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) Officer for assistance with applications. Join us in observing service members and their families take the Oath of Allegiance at the Naturalization Ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. and welcome them as new U.S. citizens. Registration is not required. RELOCATION & OVERSEAS ORIENTATION Aug 9 & Sept a.m./ 2-3p.m. Mandatory for personnel E-5 and below; topics covered include: entitlement, shipment of household goods, emotional stressors of relocation, employment, and education. Only one session is needed. SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION TRAINING Aug 16 & Sept p.m. A mandatory training that reviews roles and responsibilities of military sponsors. Complete trainings, review checklists, newcomer needs assessments, welcome packets and more online with the Electronic Sponsorship Application & Training (esat), militaryonesource.mil. TRAILS & TALES GUIDED TOUR Aug 25 & Sept a.m. A guided tour of Fort Sam Houston; learn about old and new structures that share a rich history dating back more than 150 years. Patrons must be ready for departure at the M&FRC by 8 a.m. Seating is limited, registration is required. FINANCIAL READINESS (210) Financial Readiness can assist with developing an individual plan to achieve financial goals. Specialized services include money management, credit and financial planning, insurance and consumer issues, and information on emergency assistance. Call for more information or to register. BASIC BUDGET 101 Aug 1 & Sept p.m. A hands-on, guided process that teaches patrons how to set up their own budget worksheet. Participants must bring a current LES, spouse s income information (if applicable), a list of monthly expenses, and debt information (total balance owed, monthly payment, and APR). SAVINGS & INVESTING Aug p.m. Learn about the risks and rewards of investing. Identify strategies to help reach your investment goals and review the different type of saving options. BLENDED RETIREMENT 101 Aug 14 & Sept a.m. Review the new military retirement system that goes into effect Jan. 1, 2018, by comparing how it differs from the legacy retirement pension. Additional training is available at Joint Knowledge Online (JKO). THRIFT SAVINGS PLAN Sept p.m. Are you taking full advantage of your Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)? Become familiar with contribution limits, taxdeferred investments, rates of return, and learn what options are available after separating from the military or civilian service. HOME BUYING Aug :30 p.m. Discuss the pros and cons of renting versus home ownership, budgets, different types of loans, Realtors, and more. CAR BUYING Aug 25 10:30 a.m. to Noon Review topics associated with purchasing a new or used car, avoid sales traps, dealer scams, and predatory lending. EMPLOYMENT READINESS (210) Employment Readiness helps patrons improve essential skills needed to secure employment in a competitive job market. Services include: job counseling, resume writing assistance, educational information, and more. Call for more information or to reserve a seat. COMPUTER LAB Mon, Wed, & Fri 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tues & Thurs Noon to 4 p.m.; CLOSED: 1st/3rd Thursdays (all day) Printing, faxing, and computer use is available at no charge for services directly related to M&FRC programs. For other printing, faxing, or computer usage needs, visit the Information & Referral desk for a list of post-wide available resources. Get tips on how to effectively write summary statements, employment history, and more. INTERVIEWING SKILLS & DRESS FOR SUCCESS AUG 16 & Sept a.m. Discover ways to make a lasting impression and prepare for a job interview. Join us for tips on how to dress for success and discuss the importance of social media, networking, and salary negotiation. MILITARY SPOUSE PROGRAM CAREER EVENT PERSONAL BRANDING HIRING FAIR CAREER PLANNING Networking Reception: Sept p.m. Hiring Fair: Sept a.m. to 1 p.m. This 2-day career development event features networking opportunities, resume guidance, career advise, and a hiring fair with employers that are committed to hiring military spouses. Military Spouses, Gold Star Spouses, Military Members, employers, and service organizations are welcomed to attend. The Networking Reception will take place at the USAA Headquarters Bank Lobby and the Hiring Fair will be at the Military & Family Readiness Center. To register, visit TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP)/ SOLDIER FOR LIFE JBSA-FSH Soldier for Life, Bldg. 2264, Ste (210) TAP provides counseling and job assistance to service members preparing to leave the federal service. Services include: pre-separation counseling, benefits, job search training, selfassessment tools, resume review, job analyzer software, and referral to service providers. Call to schedule an appointment or sign up. PRE-SEPARATION COUNSELING Aug 8, 22 & Sept 12, 26 9 a.m. to Noon Airmen, Sailors, and Marines planning to separate or retire from the federal service must attend this mandatory counseling. Appointments may be scheduled up to 24-months before retirement date or 12-months prior to separation. This training is held at M&FRC, Bldg To register, call Tuesday-Friday 8:30-11:30 a.m. Soldiers planning to separate from the military must attend this mandatory counseling. Appointments may be scheduled up to 24-months prior to retirement or 18-months prior to your separation date. Facilitated by Soldier for Life. TRANSITION GOALS, PLANS, SUCCESS (GPS) Aug 7-11*, 14-18, a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept 11-15*, 18-22, a.m. to 4 p.m. A mandatory 5-day workshop for all service members separating from the military. Facilitated by the Department of Labor, Veterans Administration, and M&FRC. This workshop is held in the basement of Bldg Prerequisite: Pre- Separation Counseling. *Retirees only. ACCESSING HIGHER EDUCATION Aug 7-9, & Sept 11-13, a.m. to 4 p.m. This 3-day track helps service members achieve academic success by preparing for college life and reentering school, and reviewing credit transfers, researching schools, financial aid assistance, vocational education counseling and more. This workshop is held at the Education Center, Bldg Aug & Sept a.m. to 4 p.m. Service members that already have a Bachelor s degree may attend an accelerated 2-day workshop at the Education Center, Bldg FEDERAL APPLICATION PROCESS Aug 29 & Sept a.m. Review the federal employment process and careers offered within the federal government. Learn about resources that support the Veteran s Employment Program, skills translator, resume builders, and more. CAREER TECHNICAL TRAINING Sept a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn about civilian careers that require a license or certificate, identify schools and accredited institutions, financial aid, VA benefits, apprenticeships and more. HIRING HEROES CAREER FAIR JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON SAM HOUSTON COMMUNITY CENTER Sept 20 9AM-2PM Connect with employers from federal agencies and private sector firms to learn about positions available for wounded, ill, injured and transitioning service members, Veterans, their spouses and primary caregivers. For more information, call (571) MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELORS (MFLC) (210) or Military & Family Life Counselors help service members, their families, and significant others in addressing issues from deployment and reintegration, marriage and relationships, stress and anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and other daily life issues. MILITARY CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP Aug 8 & Sept 12 9:30-11:30 a.m. Caregivers have the opportunity to build a support network, share experiences, and information. This group meets at the Solider & Family Assistance Center (SFAC) Meeting Room. For more information, call (210) EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM (210) EFMP is a mandatory enrollment program that assists service members and their families with special, physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual needs. EFMP works with military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated medical, educational, housing, community support, and personnel services. Call for details or to register. EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM WHAT DOES IT MEAN Aug p.m. Explore the 3 pillars that make up the program, Medical System, Human Resource, and Family Support; and learn what they can offer to an exceptional family member, their families, and sponsors. SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICE (210) The School Liaison Office assists parents with children in grades K-12. SLO can help with the transition between schools; provide information about local school systems, policies, programs and more. PCS'ING with School Age Youth Aug 23 Noon to 1:30 p.m. Changing schools can be exceptionally hard on you and your children. USAJOBS NAVIGATION & FEDERAL RESUME WRITING Aug 24 & Sept 28 8:30-11 a.m. Learn how to create a federal resume and navigate the USAJOBS website. TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP) TAP provides counseling and job assistance to service members, DoD civilians, and family members preparing to leave federal service. Information is also provided for service members to make informed decisions regarding reenlistment. Services address preseparation counseling, benefits, job search training, and self-assessment tools. Call to schedule an appointment. PRE-SEPARATION & RETIREMENT COUNSELING Aug 2, 16, 23 & Sept 6, 13, 27 Noon to 4 p.m. This mandatory briefing is required for all service members that are separating or retiring from the military, and is required before attending the Transition GPS workshop. Appointments may be scheduled up to 24-months prior to retirement or up to 12-months prior to separation. TRANSITION GOALS, PLANS, SUCCESS (GPS) Aug 7-11 & Sept a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This 5-day workshop is mandatory for all service members separating from the military. The GPS is facilitated by the Department of Labor, Veterans Administration, and M&FRC. Spouses welcomed. Prerequisite: Pre-Separation. VA STAND ALONE WORKSHOP Aug 25 & Sept 29 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those exempt from the mandatory 5-day TAP GPS Workshop must attend a Veterans Administration stand-alone workshop. Topics covered include critical VA programs and services ranging from general benefits information, disability compensation, and GI Bill benefit. BOOTS TO BUSINESS Aug a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A 2-day entrepreneurial education workshop hosted by the Small Business Administration. Discuss the opportunities and challenges of business ownership; review steps for evaluating business concepts; foundational knowledge required to develop a business plan; and information on SBA resources available to help access start-up capital; and additional technical assistance. MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELORS (MFLC) (210) or Military & Family Life Counselors help service members, their families, and significant others address deployment and reintegration issues; marriage, relationship and family issues; stress and anxiety; depression, grief and loss; and daily life issues. Consultations and trainings are anonymous, no records are kept. After-hours and weekend appointments are available as well as offsite or group meetings. Call to schedule an appointment. CASUALTY ASSISTANCE & SURVIVOR BENEFITS (210) or The Casualty Assistance and Survivor Benefits Plan Offices provide dignified and humane casualty notification; efficient, thorough, and compassionate follow-up assistance to the next-of-kin for as long as needed. Other services and programs provided to our military community include: SBP, Service member s Group Life Insurance, Family Member Service member s Group Life Insurance (FSGLI), Traumatic Injury Protection, and Emergency Family Member Travel Program. The SLO can help with the transition between schools and provide information about local school systems, policies, programs and more. MENTOR TRAINING Aug 10 & Sept 14 Noon to 1:30 p.m. Volunteer mentors spend time with young people to encourage positive choices and promote high selfesteem. After completion, participants are placed within a local public school. Facilitated by the SLO and Community in Schools. EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM EFMP is a mandatory enrollment program that works with military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated community support, housing, educational, medical, and personnel services to active duty personnel and their family members. Information will be provided on financial planning from conception to college, support programs offered within the community, and parenting skills. At the end of the class, active duty and active duty spouses in the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard will receive a free gift, courtesy of the Air Force Aid Society. Heart Link Sept 15 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Heart Link is an orientation for military spouses. Meet and make new friends while learning about the military mission, lifestyle, protocol and other programs available. Lunch will be provided as well as a guided tour of the Taj Mahal. SINGLE PARENT SUPPORT GROUP Sept 21 Noon to 1 p.m. A brown bag forum for single parents to connect and share helpful resources. KEY SPOUSE REFRESHER Aug 8 & Sept a.m. The Key Spouse Refresher training is hosted on the second Tuesday of every month. Open to Key Spouses and Key Spouse Mentors who have completed the mandatory initial training course at their previous location and would like a review of the program and local resources. KEY SPOUSE CONTINUING EDUCATION Aug a.m. Active Key Spouse and Key Spouse Mentors are required to attend a minimum of 1 continuing education training every quarter. INITIAL KEY SPOUSE TRAINING Sept 7 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This training is mandatory for all newly appointed Key Spouses who have not been trained at another installation and highly recommended for Key Spouse mentors. Patrons interested in learning more about the program or volunteering are also encouraged to attend. Review the nine core modules in the standard Air Force Key Spouse training curriculum, roles and responsibilities, and more. U.S. AIR FORCE KEY SPOUSE VOLUNTEER SERVICES Volunteer Services provide volunteers with opportunities based on interest and agency needs. Volunteers support the military in a variety of capacities such as: youth coaches, office assistants, program assistants, and more. Call to sign up or for information. DEPLOYMENT READINESS Deployment readiness helps service members and their families prepare for deployments, provides access to support through courses, support groups, and prepares them for unique challenges that they face when returning.
