2 JBSA-MILITARY & FAMILY READINESS SERVICES The Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Military & Family Readiness Centers (M&FRC) are dedicated to providing a full range of quality programs and services that promote self-reliance, mission readiness, resiliency and ease adaptation into the military way of life. RELOCATION ASSISTANCE (210) Reduce or eliminate problems arising due to frequent moves with specialized services such as: individual or group counseling; sponsorship and pre-arrival information; mandatory overseas briefings and post-move orientations; lending closet; and immigration services. LENDING CLOSET Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed 1st & 3rd Thursday 1-4 p.m. The Lending Closet loans basic household goods while yours are in transit; kitchen equipment, high chairs, sleeping mats, irons and more. Permanent party, students, TDY, retirees and civilians may borrow items up to 30 days. Please bring a copy of your orders. NEWCOMER S ORIENTATION & SPOUSE INFORMATION FAIR Oct 6, 20 & Nov 3, 17 8 a.m. to Noon This is a mandatory in-processing briefing for all military and civilian personnel newly assigned to JBSA, family members are also encouraged to attend. Service members must coordinate attendance with their Unit Personnel. All patrons must be signed in and seated by 7:50 a.m. Held in conjunction with the Spouse Information Fair, this is more than a traditional in-processing briefing. Representatives from agencies throughout the community will be onsite to share information with patrons. CITIZENSHIP & IMMIGRATION ASSISTANCE Oct 10 & Nov 14, 28 9 a.m. to Noon Oct 24 9 a.m. to Noon, Ceremony 2 p.m. Meet with a Citizenship & Immigration Service (USCIS) Officer for assistance with applications. Join us in observing service members and their families take the Oath of Allegiance at the Naturalization Ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. and welcome them as new U.S. citizens. Registration is not required. RELOCATION & OVERSEAS ORIENTATION Oct 11 & Nov a.m./ 2-3p.m. Mandatory for personnel E-5 and below; topics covered include: entitlement, shipment of household goods, emotional stressors of relocation, employment, and education. Only one session is needed. SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION ASSISTANCE Oct 18 & Nov p.m. Completion of the Electronic Sponsorship Application & Training (esat) is mandatory for all military sponsors and is available online at A Relocation specialist can assist with questions or provide clarification. TRAILS & TALES GUIDED TOUR Oct a.m. Located in the heart of San Antonio, Fort Sam Houston houses the largest collection of historic buildings in the Department of Defense! Specialized services include money management, credit and financial planning, insurance and consumer issues, and information on emergency assistance. Call for more information or to register. BUDGET 101 Oct 3 & Nov p.m. A hands-on, guided process that teaches patrons how to set up their own budget worksheet. Participants must bring a current LES, spouse s income information (if applicable), a list of monthly expenses, and debt information (total balance owed, monthly payment, and Annual Percent Rate). SAVINGS & INVESTING Oct p.m. Learn about the risks and rewards of investing. Identify strategies to help reach your investment goals and review the different type of saving options. BLENDED RETIREMENT 101 Oct 16 & Nov a.m. Review the new military retirement system that goes into effect Jan. 1, 2018, and compare how it differs from the legacy retirement pension. Additional training is available at Joint Knowledge Online (JKO). THRIFT SAVINGS PLAN Nov p.m. Become familiar with contribution limits, tax-deferred investments, rates of return, and learn what options are available after separating from the military or civilian service. Services include: job counseling, resume writing assistance, educational information, and more. Call for more information or to reserve a seat. EMPLOYMENT READINESS ORIENTATION Mondays 9-11 a.m. Discover local resources and programs to assist you with your employment needs. Review services offered by M&FRC, Texas Veterans Commission, Workforce Solutions, Civilian Personnel Advisory, as well as priority placement opportunities. GENERAL RESUME Oct 11 & Nov a.m. Learn about the different resume formats and which one to use when writing a non-federal resume. Get tips on how to effectively write summary statements, employment history, and more. Confidence outside the UNIFORM Oct 18 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Military members transitioning out of the military or retiring - boost your confidence by brush up on the essentials to help land a new job and readjust to civilian culture. Review appropriate attire, interviewing techniques, ways to translate your skills, tactics for salary negotiation, and networking. USAJOBS NAVIGATION & FEDERAL RESUME Nov a.m. Obtaining a Federal job is a process. Learn how to interpret federal vacancy announcements and become familiar with the USAJOBS website, set notifications about new job postings, and tailor your resume. INTERVIEWING SKILLS & DRESS FOR SUCCESS Nov a.m. Discover ways to make a lasting impression and prepare for a job interview. Join us for tips on how to dress for success and discuss the importance of social media, networking, and salary negotiation. TRANSITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP)/ SOLDIER FOR LIFE JBSA-FSH Soldier for Life, Bldg. 2264, Ste (210) TAP provides counseling and job assistance to service members preparing to leave the federal service. Services include: pre-separation counseling, benefits, job search training, selfassessment tools, resume review, job analyzer software, and referral to service providers. PRE-SEPARATION COUNSELING Oct 10, 24 & Nov 7, 21 9 a.m. to Noon Airmen, Sailors, and Marines planning to separate or retire from the federal service must attend this mandatory counseling. Appointments may be scheduled up to 24-months before retirement date or 12-months prior to separation. Training is held at M&FRC, Bldg To register, call Tuesday-Friday 8:30-11:30 a.m. Soldiers planning to separate from the military must attend this mandatory counseling. Facilitated by Soldier for Life, bldg TRANSITION GOALS, PLANS, SUCCESS (GPS) Oct 2-6*, 16-20, a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct 30-Nov 3*, Nov 27-Dec 1 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A mandatory 5-day workshop for all service members separating from the military. Facilitated by the Department of Labor, Veterans Administration, and M&FRC. This workshop is held in the basement of Bldg Prerequisite: Pre- Separation Counseling. *Retirees only. FEDERAL APPLICATION PROCESS Oct 10 & Nov a.m. Review the federal employment process and careers offered within the federal government. Learn about resources that support the Veteran s Employment Program, skills translator, resume builders, and more. CAREER TECHNICAL TRAINING Oct a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn about civilian careers that require a license or certificate, identify schools and accredited institutions, financial aid, VA benefits, apprenticeships and more. ACCESSING HIGHER EDUCATION Oct 16-18, & Nov 6-8, a.m. to 4 p.m. This 3-day track helps service members achieve academic success by preparing for college life and reentering school, and reviewing credit transfers, researching schools, financial aid assistance, vocational education counseling and more. This workshop is held at the Education Center, Bldg Oct & Nov a.m. to 4 p.m. Service members that already have a Bachelor s degree may attend an M&FRC JBSA-FSH 9 JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON

6 JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON accelerated 2-day workshop at the Education Center, Bldg TROOPS TO TEACHERS Oct 19 & Nov 16 Noon to 2 p.m. Eligible military personnel in pursuit of teaching as a second career review topics like education and licensing requirements, employment leads, counseling, placement and financial assistance, and more. BOOTS TO BUSINESS Nov a.m. to 4 p.m. A 2-day entrepreneurial education workshop hosted by the Small Business Administration. Discuss the opportunities and challenges of business ownership; review steps for evaluating business concepts; foundational knowledge for developing a business plan; information on SBA resources available to help access start-up capital; and additional technical assistance. MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELORS (MFLC) (210) or Military & Family Life Counselors help service members, their families, and significant others in addressing issues from deployment and reintegration, marriage and relationships, stress and anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and other daily life issues. Consultations and trainings are anonymous, no records are kept. Afterhours and weekend appointments are available. Meetings can also be arranged off-site. Call to schedule an appointment. 10 M&FRC JBSA-FSH MILITARY CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP Oct 10 & Nov 14 9:30-11:30 a.m. Caregivers have the opportunity to build a support network, share experiences, and information. This group meets at the Solider & Family Assistance Center (SFAC) Meeting Room. For more information, call (210) EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM (210) EFMP is a mandatory enrollment program that assists service members and their families with special, physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual needs. EFMP works with military and civilian agencies to provide comprehensive and coordinated medical, educational, housing, community support, and personnel services. Call for details or to register. LUNCH & LEARN WITH EFMP Bring your lunch and join us for a new topic each month sharing helpful resources and ways to overcome challenges. Call to register. Special Education ARD & IEP Oct 18 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guest speaker Juan Hernandez, Special Education Advocate and Trainer at Brighton Center of San Antonio will review the special education process to help parents develop the skills to become their child s best advocate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) or Individualized Education Planning (IEP) process. Record Keeping Strategies Nov 15 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join us for record keeping tips in November. Accessing service for individuals with disabilities is often dependent upon being able to provide key pieces of information at the right moment. Developing a good strategy for maintaining a comprehensive record of disability is a must. EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY MEMBER PROGRAM WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME? Nov p.m. Whether you are newly enrolled in the program or simply wish to gain a better understanding, this class offers a guide to understanding how enrollment may impact you and your family. Leaders wanting a better understand of the requirements of the program and the resources available to their service members are encouraged to attend. SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICE (210) The School Liaison Office assists parents with children in grades K-12. SLO can help with the transition between schools; provide information about local school systems, policies, programs and more. MENTOR TRAINING Oct 18 & Nov :30 a.m. Volunteer mentors spend time with young people to encourage positive choices and promote high self-esteem. After completion, participants are placed within a local public school. Facilitated by the SLO and Community in Schools. PCS ING WITH SCHOOL AGE YOUTH Nov 8 Noon to 1:30 p.m. Changing schools can be exceptionally hard on you and your children. Explore options to help with transferring your child to a new school and discuss topics like the different responses children may have when changing schools; enrollment processes; immunizations and records; placement and attendance; transcripts; special needs and more. Open to parents with children in grades K-12. PERSONAL & FAMILY LIFE (210) The Family Life Program assists in improving the quality of life for individuals and families. Classes provide knowledge and skills needed to develop and strengthen communication, promote healthy relationships, child safety, coping with life events, and realizing personal potential. Unit team building training is available by request. Call for class details or to register. HELPING US GROW SECURELY (HUGS) PLAYGROUP Tuesdays 10 a.m. to Noon *Oct 3 & Nov 21 dates Canceled A playgroup for infants and toddlers (up to age 5); open to parents and their children. The playgroup meets at the Middle School Teen Center, Bldg Registration is not required. STRESS MANAGEMENT Oct p.m. Identify what stress is and how can it can affect you positively and negatively. Learn physical, emotional, and behavioral signs of stress and what you can do about it. GOAL SETTING Oct 12 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Make sure your goals are obtainable and track your progress to stay motivated. Discover how to apply the SMART techniques to your personal goals with this hands-on training. CHILDREN IN THE MIDDLE Oct 10 & 13 8 a.m. to Noon This 2-part series must be attended in order and meets the Texas court ordered requirements for divorcing JBSA-FORT SAM HOUSTON M&FRC JBSA-FSH 11

Topics focus on how families can meet the needs of children growing up between two homes and provides separating parents with very specific strategies on how to handle the unusual circumstances surrounding divorce and co-parenting. This is a free service. INFANT MASSAGE Oct 16, 23, :30 a.m. This 3-part series must be attended in order. Infant Massage helps normalize muscle tone, improve blood circulation, stimulate brain development, and improve sensory awareness. In addition, it may help with relieving discomfort from constipation, gas, and colic allowing babies (and parents) to sleep better. CAR SEAT 101 Oct 16 & Nov p.m. Review the basics of car seat installation and make sure your child is seated properly within their car seat. This class is required before attending the Safety Seat Clinic. BOOTS TO BUSINESS Oct a.m. to 4 p.m. A 2-day entrepreneurial education workshop hosted by the Small Business Administration. Discuss the opportunities and challenges of business ownership; review steps for evaluating business concepts; foundational knowledge for developing a business plan; information on SBA resources available to help access start-up capital; and additional technical assistance. Representatives from the Alamo Area Council of Governments, Bexar Area Agency on Aging, and M&FRC will provide information and tools to help make informed choices on information on humanitarian reassignments, secondary dependency, cyber care-giving options, stress management, TRICARE for life, and more. U.S. AIR FORCE KEY SPOUSE REFRESHER Oct 10 & Nov a.m. The Key Spouse Refresher training is hosted on the second Tuesday of every month. Open to Key Spouses and Key Spouse Mentors who have completed the mandatory initial training course at their previous location and would like a review of the program and local resources. INITIAL KEY SPOUSE TRAINING Nov 2 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This training is mandatory for all newly appointed Key Spouses who have not been trained at another installation and highly recommended for Key Spouse mentors. Patrons interested in learning more about the program or volunteering are also encouraged to attend.
