A ceremony for Department of English award recipients will be held on Friday, April 12, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in the McGregor Conference Center on Campus. WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY 2013/2014 DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS GILBERT R. AND PATRICIA K. DAVIS ENDOWED MERIT SCHOLARSHIP is open to part-time undergraduate students majoring in English in the College of Liberal Arts, with a grade point average of 3.0 or above, a minimum of 15 hours in residence at WSU. Recipients must be Michigan residents. Emily Brush Shavaughn Hunter Stephanie Kastaw Tara Nolan ALBERT FEIGENSON SCHOLARSHIP is for full-time undergraduate and graduate students in English or Music who maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate financial need. 2 PROFESSOR ARNOLD GOLDSMITH ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP is for full-time undergraduate and graduate students in English who maintain a minimum 3.0 g.p.a. and demonstrate financial need. Undergraduate: Felicia Ghrist Aaron Pellerin THOMAS R. JASINA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGLISH was established to honor the memory of Thomas R. Jasina, a Wayne State alumnus and prolific creative writer. This scholarship is for currently enrolled full or part-time graduate students. Kinyel Ferguson Joseph Harris TERRANCE KING ENDOWED MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP IN ENGLISH honors the memory of a beloved Professor of English who passed away in 1997, and whose career was marked by uncommon dedication to graduate and undergraduate students. This fellowship is awarded each year to an exceptionally promising Ph.D. student in English. The ideal candidate is a student who has passed the field examinations and the dissertation prospectus examination, and who is ready to embark on the project of writing the dissertation. The award confers distinction upon the recipient, who is selected by the Department of English Graduate Faculty, for the quality of the dissertation project. Joan Wedes THE CHRISTOPHER T. LELAND ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN CREATIVE WRITING was established by the family and friends of Professor Christopher Leland to honor his memory. Awards for this scholarship are given to the most gifted student writers irrespective of completed coursework, g.p.a., or financial need. This year s applicants were nominated by Department of English faculty. Vincent Perrone
3 LOUGHEAD-ELDREDGE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS IN CREATIVE WRITING is for undergraduate and graduate students in English registered for at least six credit hours per term. Three scholarships are available each academic year and are awarded to students with clearly defined creative writing goals. Undergraduate: Ryan Cox Robin Coleman Kinyel Ferguson Joseph Harris THE DUSTIN ROSE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP was established to recognize scholastic achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide assistance to students in financing their English program through the College of Liberal Arts. Students may be enrolled full-time or part-time at the undergraduate level. Recipients are selected on the basis of scholastic achievement. 4 THE DENNIS TURNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN FILM STUDIES is for fulltime undergraduate and graduate students majoring or demonstrating a strong interest in Film Studies and maintaining a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The scholarship was established to recognize scholastic achievement, to encourage continued progress, and to provide financial assistance towards an education in Film Studies at Wayne State University. Kerin Ogg THE PEARL A. WARN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN ENGLISH has been recently established for students, 27 years and older, who are returning to university studies. Students may be enrolled full time or part time, at the graduate or undergraduate level, although preference will be given to graduate students. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, promise for the future, and financial need. Undergraduate Ny Ree Williams Graduate Catherine Donaldson JOSEPH J. AND MARY E. YELDA ENDOWED MERIT SCHOLARSHIP FOR ENGLISH is open to full-time undergraduate students who attended a Detroit metropolitan high school, are majoring in English in the College of Liberal Arts, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. 5 WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY 2013 DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH WRITING AWARD RECIPIENTS Judith Siegel Pearson Award Established in memory of a former student in and faculty member of the Wayne State English Department, the Judith Siegel Pearson Award is given each year for the winning entry in one or two of the four genres designated for that year, with its prime emphasis on women s issues. This year the award is for poetry. The awards are sponsored by Mrs. Naomi Siegel and Mr. Nathaniel Pearson. Chris Tysh of the Wayne State University Department of English was the initial judge in this year s contest. The final judge was Joyce Jenkins, a noted Bay Area poet and the founder and editor of the Poetry Flash Literary Review and Calendar for the West. She is the producer/sponsor of the Northern California Book Reviewers and the Northern California Book Awards. Honorable Mention: Sophia Rivkin for Collection: Come to the Edge Maude Larke for Collection: Promiscuité Phillip Lawson Hatch, Jr. Memorial Award Established to recognize achievement and to encourage continued progress in the expression and investigation of ethnicities, the Phillip Lawson Hatch, Jr. Memorial Award is awarded each year for the winning entry in the genres of drama, fiction or poetry. This award has been endowed by Ms. Nigelle Hatch in order to recognize students for the best creative expressions of ethnic experience. Elizabeth Reich of the Wayne State University Department of English was the initial judge of this year s contest. The final judge was Lisa Ze-Winters, also from the Wayne State University Department of English. Ryan Cox for A Cockroach Poem John Clare Award in Poetry Named for the English Romantic poet, the John Clare Competition is sponsored by the Academy of American Poets in New York, and is subsidized by a grant from Mr. and Mrs. Michael Becker. Winners of this competition are published in the July/August and September/October issues of the writing organ of the Academy: POETRY PILOT. Copies of the winning poems are kept by the Academy for possible inclusion in its next College Prize Anthology. This anthology is published every five years, and is edited by an internationally known poet, from winning entries in competitions featuring 181 prize winners. The preliminary judge for the Clare Competition was Chris Tysh of the Wayne State University Department of English. The final judge was acclaimed performance poet Sean Thomas Doughtery, who is currently a creative writing instructor at Cleveland State University.
6 Vincent Perrone for Selected Poems: late funeral, etc. Tompkins Awards The Tompkins Competition, originated in 1941, was named for the first professor of English at Wayne, Frank Tompkins. It is the oldest of the writing competitions. Preliminary judges for the Tompkins competition were Elizabeth Reich (drama), Ruth Ray (non-fiction), M.L. Liebler (fiction) and Chris Tysh (poetry) from the Wayne State University Department of English. The final judges were Lisa Ze-Winters, Frances Ranney, LaToya Faulk, and Todd Duncan from the Wayne State University Department of English. 7 DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH 2013 SPECIAL UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS RECIPIENTS Essay Award This award is presented to the English major submitting the best upper-division paper for the 2012/2013 academic year. Devon Holland for "Essentialism and Transgressive Performativity in Rudyard Kipling s Kim Distinguished Graduating Senior Award This award is presented to the graduating senior earning the highest g.p.a of English majors not enrolled in an honors program. Ricardo Castaño IV Service Achievement Award This award is presented to an English major demonstrating a strong service commitment to the academic community and the community at large.
