2 THE JOSEPH W. COLEMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Taleris Credit Union believes in investing in the future education of its members. The Joseph W. Coleman Memorial Scholarship Award was established to recognize, honor, and reward students who have demonstrated excellence in various areas that include, as well as, go beyond academic performance. This scholarship award provides financial assistance to members to continue their education and training beyond high school and to pursue their dreams. CRITERIA The scholarships will be awarded annually to two students based on achievement, citizenship, community service, character qualities, and involvement in school activities without regard to financial need. SELECTION PROCESS Scholarship recipients will be selected by an impartial Scholarship Selection Committee appointed by the Board of Directors. SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY The scholarships are open to any student who meets these qualifications: Is a member or whose parents are members in good standing of Taleris Credit Union. Is currently enrolled or plans to enroll during 2017 in an undergraduate study program, leading to a traditional Associate or Bachelor degree, in a regionally accredited institution of higher learning. Has been accepted at a qualifying institution (a copy of the official letter of acceptance must be provided). Is not a past recipient of the Joseph W. Coleman Memorial Scholarship. Members of the Scholarship Selection Committee and their immediate family members (son, daughter, mother, father, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, aunt, uncle and like in-laws) are not eligible. 3 WHEN TO APPLY Qualifying members may apply after September 1, The DEADLINE for application packages to be received by Taleris Credit Union is 4:00 PM on March 15, HOW TO APPLY All SIX sections below must be completed and mailed as a package to Taleris Credit Union by the due date. If all required sections are not completed, the applicant will have points subtracted from their final score. 1. THE APPLICATION FORM Qualifying members must complete and sign the Scholarship Application Form. 2. ACHIEVEMENTS, LEADERSHIP AND INVOLVEMENT On a separate piece of paper, please list (typewritten) the following items and include this with your application. A. Community activities/achievements B. School activities/achievements 3. ESSAY Your essay must be typewritten and included with the application package. BOTH of the following questions must be answered in the essay. A. Other than the power to heal the sick, choose one Super Power. Explain why you chose this Super Power and what you would do with it. B. Select a creative work a novel, a film, a poem, a song, a painting that has influenced you. Discuss the work and its effect on you. 4. LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION Applicants must submit one letter of recommendation. The letter may not be written by the applicant, anyone under 21 years of age, or anyone related to or serving as their legal guardian. Letter must state association with the applicant and should be from an individual such as a teacher, coach, employer, career or guidance counselor, etc. The letter must be typewritten, current (not more than six months old), and must be signed and dated by the writer. 4 5. AN OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT OF GRADES One copy of the official transcripts or permanent records showing the final grades for high school must be included with the application package. Applicants with educational experience beyond high school must provide official transcripts and/or permanent records indicating academic performance for their enrollment period. Transcripts may be scanned and attached to the online application. 6. COLLEGE ENROLLMENT VERIFICATION Applicants must provide verification of enrollment in a qualifying academic institution in order to be considered for this scholarship award. This can include an official college acceptance letter or an enrollment verification form signed by an official of your school s Registrar s office verifying your full-time enrollment in a degree-seeking program. Verification can be scanned and attached to the online application. SUBMITTING THE APPLICATION PACKAGE The application package must be received no later than March 15, Mail to: Taleris Credit Union, Inc. Scholarship Program 1250 E. Granger Road Cleveland, Ohio SCHOLARSHIP AWARD AMOUNTS Taleris Credit Union, Inc. will award (2) two scholarships in 2017 in the amount of $1, each.
