1 Fall 2015 NAVIGATOR The Newsletter of the AAEP Foundation AAEP Foundation distributes $350,000 to support equine welfare A diverse collection of 26 equine organizations and special projects with the common aim of improving the welfare of the horse recently shared in grants from the AAEP Foundation totaling $350,320. The 2015 allotment brings the Foundation s cumulative financial support of its mission to improve the welfare of the horse to more than $3.3 million since its inception. Among the initiatives receiving support were student veterinary scholarships and educational programs, important equine laminitis research, Equitarian workshops (support for working equids), unwanted horse programs, and professional and youth development. New initiatives to receive funding included: an Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) Research Planning Summit, a key component of the AAEP s recently announced Prescription for Racing Reform; the Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, which promotes second careers for Thoroughbred racehorses; the 10th International Equine Infectious Diseases Conference Practitioner s Day, organized by the University of Kentucky s Gluck Equine Research Foundation to provide equine practitioners the latest scientific progress on a variety of infectious disease topics; Walter Tun The versatility of off-the-track Thoroughbreds is showcased during the Thoroughbred Makeover. the Equine Education Network, a youth and college-level development program being started by the EQUUS Foundation; and the 12th International Equine Colic Research Symposium, which will convene distinguished researchers from across the world in summer 2017 to share knowledge on equine colic research. In addition, the Foundation has partnered with the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, racetracks and other equine companies to fund a pair of research projects that investigate the pathophysiology of EIPH and the effect of the medication furosemide on that condition. For a complete list of 2015 grant recipients, visit org and click the Our Work heading. Mission Statement: To serve as the charitable arm of the AAEP to improve the welfare of the horse.

2 Legacy gift repays the horse for life s blessings The horse has contributed much joy and fulfillment to the life of Dr. Benjamin Franklin, Jr., so when it came time to look at estate planning, it was only natural to want to give back in support of the welfare of the horse. He did so by pledging a portion of his estate to the AAEP Foundation and, in so doing, becoming a member of the Legacy Society. Dr. Franklin recently discussed his bequest, which was cemented by the fact that the entirety of every gift to the Foundation is invested in projects and programs that benefit the horse. Describe the important role horses have played in your life? My only personal experience with horses has been brief ownership of a few breeding stock. As with many my age, I came from a poor family. Becoming a veterinarian who worked on horses has provided many blessings, including a comfortable life and retirement, a wealth of friends and acquaintances, wonderful partners in business and a sense of having contributed to the welfare of a species I love. Is there an important moment, person or special reason connected with AAEP that may have influenced your decision to include the AAEP Foundation in your estate plans? I served on the initial Foundation Committee and was president when we had our first long-range planning session for the Foundation. When we decided that 100% of the money received would go to the efforts to help horses, in many ways I knew that a portion of my estate would reside in the Foundation. When you think of the AAEP Foundation, what key words or phrases come to your mind? Diversity of support, prioritizing of need and caring. From your perspective, how has the work of the AAEP Foundation influenced the welfare of the horse? The welfare of horses is obtained through many avenues. Some of the avenues are direct and some are indirect. Research, education and indirect support for those who Dr. Benjamin Franklin, Jr. care for horses are truly influences on the welfare of horses. Through the diversified support of these entities, horses enjoy better care and health. Direct assistance through vaccines and nutrition are more obvious but not more important. What legacy do you hope to leave through your estate gift? By making the gift along with others, it will stimulate those who have gained from their work on horses to perpetuate a sense of giving back to that great animal s welfare. What advice would you like to share with other AAEP members about this? If you believe in a cause, find the way to support that cause in whatever way is comfortable. The AAEP Foundation is a cause to believe in. Interested in joining the Legacy Society? 3 Researchers: Submit Support Limb Laminitis research grant pre-proposals by Jan. 15 The AAEP Foundation is accepting pre-proposals for research projects addressing Support Limb Laminitis, a condition that burdens owners of afflicted horses with a poor prognosis, expensive treatment and significant emotional impact. Accepted one- and multi-year projects will share in total grant funding of up to $170,000, thanks in part to funds generated from an initial challenge grant from Starlight Racing partners in 2014 in memory of their Grade II winner Intense Holiday. The three-year-old Thoroughbred colt succumbed to laminitis less than six weeks after competing in the 2014 Kentucky Derby. The research project, or proposed portion of a project for which funding is requested, must be completed within three years. Multiyear projects are invited but cannot exceed the total budget allocation. Projects with smaller budgets are invited to submit. Major equipment purchases will not be funded by the AAEP Foundation. The AAEP is sensitive to humane use of horses for research and favors clinical studies for laminitis research. All prospective research studies funded by the AAEP Foundation must receive full approval by the facility s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee or equivalent research review entity. Complete grant pre-proposal guidelines and instructions are available at org/laminitis-research-project-i-38. html. Pre-proposals must be received by Jan. 15, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. Invitations for full grant proposals will be issued by Feb. 9, Full grant proposals, upon invitation only, must be received by March 15, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. Funding of full grants will be announced by May 15, Foundation to put EIPH under the scope AAEP FOUNDATION, INC Iron Works Parkway Lexington, KY TEL (800) (U.S. & Canada) TEL (859) FAX (859) AAEP FOUNDATION, INC. Milne State-of-the-Art Lecture on Dec. 7. Supporting the next generation of equine veterinarians through scholarship support has long been a staple of AAEP Foundation grant funding and is more important than ever given the rising cost of a veterinary education. A thank you note from one of our scholarship recipients appears below.
