2 Education in South Africa South Africa is one of the most unequal countries in the world and despite education accounting for over 17% of government spending the quality of teaching that a child receives remains dependent on where they live and their parents economic status. South Africa ranks 132nd out of 144 countries for its primary education and 143rd in science and maths. A World Economic Forum report placed South Africa last in a ranking of 62 countries for our quality of maths and science education in % of South Africa s schools are failing to meet the minimum performance standards in mathematics and science education. In 2010, only 54% of year-old children living in the poorest quintile had completed Grade 9, compared to 89% of children in the richest households. 72% of 20 to 25 year olds do not have a matric. 20% of schools produce 93% of matriculation passes and 80% of SA s university students. 6,6% of schools produce 50% of South Africa s university entrance level passes in mathematics and 5,5% of schools produce 50% of the science passes.

27 Sustainability LEAP s sustainability rests on the following initiatives: LEAP has a number of core partners with whom we have established multi-year funding relationships. These are positively maintained and contributions are grown year on year. We actively research and recruit new donors to LEAP s donor portfolio ensuring a diversity of funders and income streams from international and national institutions, trusts, foundations, corporates and individuals. LEAP is advocating for the creation of Impact Schools, a third tier of state assisted schools between the public and independent school models that allows full government funding while retaining management independence and staffing autonomy within the school. Impact Schools will build on the experience and learnings from other global contexts including the Charter School movement in the US and the Academies in the UK. The expansion of the LEAP Endowment Fund, with the aim of utilising income generated from the fund to cover school operating expenses. Building the investment portfolio of the LEAP Education Trust by securing equity stakes in South African corporations looking to secure a broad-based black economic empowerment partner.
