CLUB NEWS ROTARY DISTRICT 7690 OCTOBER 2015 DISTRICT GOVERNOR S NEWSLETTER Be a Gift to the World Larry Lassiter, DG PO Box 785, Troy, NC What is Vocational Service? Larry W. Lassiter District Governor Rotary District 7690 Office 11 Willoughby Park Dr. High Point, NC Margaret Padgett, Editor Rotary7690@northstate.net Art: Martha Shelley It is October already! This Rotary year is entering the 2nd quarter. October is Vocational Service Month in our Rotary calendar. What is vocational service? If you are an active, engaged Rotarian, you probably view vocational service as a way of life, even if you find it difficult to articulate a clear definition. The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of vocational service is rooted in the Second Object, which calls on Rotarians to encourage and foster high ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. As a Rotarian, how can we put these ideals into action? Some suggestions are to talk about your vocation in your club, and take time to learn about fellow members vocations; use your professional skills to serve your community; practice your profession with integrity and inspire others to behave ethically through your own words and actions; help a young person achieve his or her career aspirations and guide and encourage others in their professional development. If you do any of these things, you are performing vocational service. Vocational service is the very essence of Rotary. It is what sets us apart from other service organizations.

It s About Membership Collaboration Makes the Difference! Just like in your family, your work or at your Rotary people must work together to complete the job! I ve just returned from a passage thru the Panama Canal and the history of the over 100 year old Canal reminded me of the important legacy of Rotary International. Both ideas germinated into the reality of projects that have changed the world! Altho the arduous building of the Canal floundered, at first, as malaria wiped out thousands of workers and the French grew frustrated with the obstacles, the United States stepped up, a cure was found for Malaria and new energy and enthusiasm brought the Canal to its successful final completion in 191. Rotary, too, has ebbed and flowed but continues to endure. But it s not because of one or two people in a club. It takes the talent, commitment and hard work of every single member to grow and retain membership. For more than 2 years we have reiterated our District membership motto: One Member Per Member! We must collaborate and work together to keep our clubs interesting, vital and growing. Individual member engagement may come and go, at times, but always new members or newly engaged members must step up and continue to offer revitalized leadership. By challenging your club to get everyone involved in projects as well as recruiting brings new accountability and life to an organization. Integrate new ideas. Be bold and courageous to try new things. Recognize that the best leaders know how to facilitate the sharing of ideas and solutions. Take time to review your strategic plan, make new goals and let the team carry it along. As Harry Truman said, It is amazing the results you can achieve when you do not care who gets the credit! Thanks to David Moff, Greensboro Rotarian, and his valuable HR ideas! Cindi Hewitt, D7690 Membership Chair, cpr5@aol.com, The Piedmont Rotarian

ROTARY GLOBAL AWARDS Rotary International President Ravi Ravindran is placing a great deal of emphasis on increasing the value of membership for Rotarians. As part of that emphasis, Rotary International has introduced a new program called Rotary Global Awards. This new initiative provides discounts on a variety of goods and services, and these discounts are only available for redemption to those logged into MyRotary. Recently, I had the opportunity to take Rotary Global Rewards for a test drive. I found the discounts fell into two categories broad discounts with familiar brand names and other discounts specific to certain locations. While the discounts with companies such as Avis and Holiday Inn are helpful, I hit the jackpot on a recent family trip to Chicago! During our vacation in Chicago, we wanted to visit many attractions that ranged from their fabulous museums to an architectural tour to the Shedd Aquarium. Through Rotary Global Awards, we found a card that granted free entry to over 25 attractions in Chicago, and it also allowed card holders to skip the long lines at most of those attractions. The price of the discount card looked attractive for all that it offered, but I decided to put Rotary Global Rewards to the test by checking prices for that same discount card at a number of other outlets. I was so pleased to learn that not only would the card create monetary and time savings, but buying the card through Rotary Global Rewards saved my family $135 vs. the next best source for the card. On my first try with Rotary Global Rewards, I saved the equivalent of 2.5 years of Rotary International dues, so I can confirm that President Ravi and Rotary staff have created a program that provides substantial value for Rotarians. Now it s our job to be sure that Rotarians become aware of this program, so they can gain tangible monetary savings, in addition to the many intangible benefits, from their Rotary membership. 5 A FUN TIME FOR ALL District 7690 celebrated its Family of Rotary the evening of Saturday, July 26. Almost 700 Rotarians, family and friends enjoyed the Greensboro Grasshoppers game during an evening that was low on humidity and big on fun. Jacob Lassiter, grandson of Governor Larry and Deloris, fired a first pitch strike to get the evening off to a great start. Bono, famed lead singer of the band U2, praised Rotary s long-term efforts and success in defeating polio worldwide in a taped message on the video board. Entertainment between innings included Rotarians from High Point and Clemmons in the Build -A-Burger competition and Rotarians from Summit in a Sumo Wrestling contest. Miss Babe Ruth, the famed black lab, delivered fresh baseballs to the umpire and retrieved bats from the batter s box. Reliable witnesses also swear they saw Rotarians and their families snow sledding at the game! On the field, the Grasshoppers belted four home runs on the way to a 5- victory over the Savannah Sand Gnats. The game was a fine prelude to a 15-minute fireworks show immediately after the victory. This was our second Family of Rotary baseball game and just as much fun as the first edition. Rotarians across our district have experienced the power of sharing Rotary with their friends and families. Now, it is time for clubs and areas to organize events for Family of Rotary. I am here to help if you need ideas for your local event. Patrick Eakes District 7690 Family of Rotary Chair 5 The Piedmont Rotarian

Rotary Clubs of Alamance County (Area 3) Host a Family of Rotary Night at the Ballpark with Special Guests, District Governor & Governor s Aide, Larry and Deloris Lassiter On Thursday, August 6, 2015, the clubs of Area 3 in Rotary District 7690 hosted a night at the ballpark at the Burlington Royals baseball stadium for the family and friends of their local Rotary clubs. The clubs came together to have an event so that the club members could fellowship together as well as invite their families for a night of food, fun, friendship and baseball! To their surprise, District Governor Larry Lassiter not only attended the event along with his wife and Governor s Aide, Deloris Lassiter, but Larry was also asked by the Burlington Royals Team to throw the first pitch! (DG Larry Lassiter Throws first pitch at Area 3 s Burlington Royals Family of Rotary Night Out) Family of Rotary is a District-wide area of focus of Rotary District 7690 begun by Past District Governor Cookie Billings (2013-1). Each district governor since her term has made Family of Rotary a continued focus, including PDG Patrick Eakes (201-15), and current DG Larry Lassiter. The goal of Family of Rotary is to encourage Rotarians to include their family members from newborns to great grandparents in Rotary activities and functions. Through this area of focus, our goal as a district is to continue the legacy of Rotary for generations to come. Area 3 Clubs of District 7690 include: Burlington Evening, President: Mark Podolle Rotary Club of Alamance, President: Katie Dukeshire Burlington Breakfast Club, President: JP Ruppe Graham Rotary Club, President: Steven Taylor Fellowship events are a great opportunity for the community to see Rotarians out and about having a good time. More importantly, it s also an opportunity for fellow Rotarians to spend time together outside of regular meetings to get to know one another in a social setting with family and friends. Everyone had a great time and we are looking forward to sharing with you other events in the future as we continue to bring our clubs together for the common goal of enriching people s lives through Rotary. 6 The Piedmont Rotarian

OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION ENDOWMENT FUND BECOME A BEQUEST SOCIETY MEMBER One of the most important gifts a Rotarian can make is an estate gift to Our Rotary Foundation s Endowment Fund. The Endowment Fund exists to ensure that Rotary will be a significant force for good in the world long after current Rotarians are gone. The Endowment Fund allows each of us to continue our impact in perpetuity, since our gifts are held in the Endowment and only earnings on our gifts are spent. When asking a Rotarian to join the Bequest Society with an estate gift commitment of at least $10,000, the Rotarian might say that it is too much trouble to rework his/her will. There are two easy solutions for that potential obstacle. The first possibility is a Letter of Intent that requires only the Rotarian s name and signature, the date, and the amount of the gift. The Rotarian can fill in these four pieces of information in seconds and then provide a copy to his/her loved ones or attorney to add to estate documents. This is used for Rotarians who have simple estates that typically will be left to a single person. The second possibility is a Will Codicil that requires only slightly more effort. This page serves as an addendum to an existing will that might be more complex, with multiple beneficiaries. All that is required is the same name, signature, date, gift amount, and county of residence, plus a notarization. Many Rotary clubs have notaries in their membership or members who employ notaries, so this should not be an undue burden. Once the Codicil is executed, a copy should be placed with the existing will. These documents found on the landing page of the district website will make it easy for Rotarians to make a truly lasting impact on hundreds of lives. You can also obtain these documents from IPDG Patrick Eakes, our District Endowment Chair. Other ways to fund the bequest are through life insurance, charitable remainder trust, retirement plan (IRA/01(k) or donor advised fund. I hope you will consider joining the Bequest Society. You will be helping to secure the future of Rotary s outstanding educational and humanitarian programs. For more information, please reach out to our Endowment Chair, IPDG Patrick Eakes, at patrick.eakes@cpeakes.com. 10 The Piedmont Rotarian

POLIO PLUS UPDATE October 23rd, 2015 has been designated as World Polio Day and the week of October 19 is a great opportunity for our clubs in District 7690 to celebrate our Rotary partnership in eradicating polio from the face of the earth. We have much to celebrate in our polio eradication journey and you can join in the celebration with a special event at your club that week. Go to the Polio Plus Fundraising Toolkit on the District 7690 website to identify fundraising ideas and get more information on Rotary efforts to End Polio Now! You are also invited to join Rotary International on 23 October for our third annual World Polio Day event. We ll be streaming live from New York City, so tune in at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time to watch a global status update on the fight to end polio and take part in the conversation. Guests will include Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, celebrity ambassadors, polio survivors, and others. You can join the Live Stream event by going to the End Polio Now website. July 2, 2015 marked one year since Nigeria s last case of type 1 wild poliovirus. This achievement has particular significance because Nigeria is one of only three countries in the world in which polio is still endemic. When the disease is eradicated in Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, the world will be free of polio. And August 11th marks a full year since Africa s last reported a type 1 wild poliovirus case. The African continent has overcome significant challenges including lack of security and difficulty reaching children in remote places to protect their children from polio. District 7690 has played an important role in reaching these milestones. Finally, on September 21st 2015, the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (GCC) officially verified the worldwide eradication of type 2 wild poliovirus. Convening in Bali, Indonesia, the GCC verified the eradication of this strain after reviewing formal documentation submitted by Member States. The last detected type 2 wild polio virus dates to October 1999, from Aligarh, northern India. This announcement marks a major landmark in the global efforts to eradicate all three wild poliovirus serotypes: type 1, type 2, and type 3. Type 3 has not been detected globally since November 2012 in Nigeria, and the only remaining endemic type 1 strains are now restricted to Pakistan and Afghanistan. 11 The Piedmont Rotarian
